The Snapping Turtle in the Pen - September 27, 2020 @goldenoakfarm

On Sunday night when my husband went out to do chores in the pasture pen (which had not gotten moved) he found this. We couldn’t measure it but a guess is about 14” – 16” long.

The fence is set up so the chickens can’t get out. The bottom is rolled slightly to the inside and we use the white pigtail posts to hold it down where the grass is high or there’s a dip or hole.

So this turtle had pushed its way under the fence and once in, couldn’t get out. The pullets were giving it wide berth.

We lifted the fence and pushed it back outside without it attacking. But when my husband went to put a post into the fence inside the pen, it did start snapping at him.

The farm where our 10 acre piece is has a small pond that is about 800’ away. My husband asked them if they were missing a turtle and to come get it. He also mentioned that this was Reason #8 for not going into a chicken pen barefoot…
