Malaysia’s “Oriental Daily” reported on March 21st that Hawking’s children stated in a statement that he chose to hold his father’s funeral in Cambridge to reflect “Howard’s love of the city and the city’s love for him”. .

Cambridge is a famous university town and home to the University of Cambridge. The statement stated: "Our father had lived and worked in Cambridge for more than 50 years. He is an integral and highly recognizable part of this university and city. Therefore, we decided to hold his funeral in Cambridge."
