Something I often take for granted on Hive is that I get to read posts written by people from all over the world. More often than not these international snippets of life are written in English, but over the past few months I've noticed more and more folk are writing posts in their native tongue and then translating them into English for people like me. Very nice, don't you think?
Now, you could just take this generosity for granted like I have and carry on enjoying the privilege of being able to read posts written in English without giving it another moment's thought. Or you could reflect on the fact that there are always two sides to every story. I mean, it is all good and well knowing there are enough people on Hive who can read English to never have to worry about translating your posts. That is a fact. But to me, being part of Hive means we go that extra mile and we endeavor to encourage engagement and interaction in an effort to offer more than our competitors.
Since having this thought I have taken a look at my Facebook profile, scrolling my feed to compare the internationality of what I consume on one of the largest social media platforms against what I consume over here, on little-old-Hive. And guess what I found out? Yep, that's right, Facebook doesn't even come close when comes to connecting people who speak different languages. Hive, on the other hand, is like a global microcosm, teeming with like-minded people who have taken the boundaries of language as a challenge rather than a reason to turn away.
This is a wonderful situation to be in and something we all should encourage. I appreciate very much the efforts of those who choose to translate their posts to English and now I think it is our turn to pay it forwards.
Obviously, people translate their posts to English because it is such a widely spoken language and if we intend to reverse this good deed the question naturally occurs to ask what language should we translate our posts into? We could go about this challenge by uniformly deciding on another commonly used language, such as Spanish or French, but I feel that would make this exercise too formal. I want this to be fun as much as I want it to be taken seriously. So, for that reason, I would suggest that you choose any language you please. If you fancy translating your post into Swahili, go right ahead, although you might be narrowing your audience a little. Maybe, a good way to think about this challenge is to think about someone on Hive whose work you enjoy and who speaks a different language. Wouldn't it be great for this person to be able to read your post in his/her own language? I think that would be much appreciated.

As my girlfriend is from Italy, I have chosen to translate this post into Italian. I know that Hive does have an Italian community onboard, so hopefully, this will be a refreshing surprise for them to see.

Qualcosa che spesso darò per scontato su Hive è che leggo post scritti da persone di tutto il mondo. Il più delle volte questi frammenti internazionali di vita sono scritti in inglese, ma negli ultimi mesi ho notato che sempre più persone scrivono post nella loro lingua madre e poi li traducono in inglese per persone come me. Molto bello, non credi?
Ora, potresti semplicemente dare per scontata questa generosità come ho fatto io e continuare a godere del privilegio di poter leggere post scritti in inglese senza pensarci un altro momento. Oppure potresti riflettere sul fatto che ci sono sempre due lati di ogni storia. Voglio dire, è tutto buono e ben sapendo che ci sono abbastanza persone su Hive che sanno leggere l'inglese per non doversi mai preoccupare di tradurre i tuoi post. Questo è un dato di fatto. Ma per me, far parte di Hive significa che facciamo quel miglio in più e ci sforziamo di incoraggiare l'impegno e l'interazione nel tentativo di offrire più dei nostri concorrenti.
Da quando ho avuto questo pensiero ho dato un'occhiata al mio profilo Facebook, scorrendo il mio feed per confrontare l'internazionalità di ciò che consumo su una delle più grandi piattaforme di social media con ciò che consumo qui, su little-old-Hive. E indovina cosa ho scoperto? Sì, è vero, Facebook non si avvicina nemmeno quando si tratta di connettere persone che parlano lingue diverse. Hive, d'altra parte, è come un microcosmo globale, brulicante di persone che la pensano allo stesso modo che hanno preso i confini del linguaggio come una sfida piuttosto che un motivo per allontanarsi.
Questa è una situazione meravigliosa in cui trovarsi e qualcosa che tutti dovremmo incoraggiare. Apprezzo molto gli sforzi di coloro che scelgono di tradurre i loro post in inglese e ora penso che sia il nostro turno di pagarlo in avanti.
Ovviamente, le persone traducono i loro post in inglese perché è una lingua così ampiamente parlata e se intendiamo invertire questa buona azione la domanda si pone naturalmente per chiedere in quale lingua dovremmo tradurre i nostri post? Potremmo portare avanti questa sfida decidendo uniformemente un'altra lingua comunemente usata, come lo spagnolo o il francese, ma ritengo che ciò renderebbe questo esercizio troppo formale. Voglio che questo sia divertente tanto quanto voglio che sia preso sul serio. Quindi, per questo motivo, ti suggerirei di scegliere qualsiasi lingua tu preferisca. Se hai voglia di tradurre il tuo post in swahili, vai avanti, anche se potresti restringere un po 'il tuo pubblico. Forse, un buon modo per pensare a questa sfida è pensare a qualcuno su Hive il cui lavoro ti piace e che parla una lingua diversa. Non sarebbe bello per questa persona essere in grado di leggere il tuo post nella sua lingua? Penso che sarebbe molto apprezzato.
Quindi, eccolo qui, la mia sfida a tutti voi. E per favore lascia un link nella sezione commenti o tagga il nome del mio profilo nel tuo post, perché mi piacerebbe vedere come vai avanti. Dato che la mia ragazza è italiana, ho scelto di tradurre questo post in italiano. So che Hive ha una comunità italiana a bordo, quindi spero che questa sarà una sorpresa rinfrescante per loro da vedere.
