Winter Theme Activities - learning about the season

Finally, we had some snow yesterday! Caleb was truly excited! And I must admit, I was too. 😆❄️🌨

We started to learn about Winter and how this season changes last month in December. Mostly, we learned about weather and how this affects nature, plants, soil.
I realize now that books are our main learning resources as we take all the information from there. I use our books as reference for many of our learning activities, like a base or the starting point.

Let me give you a fair example:

Learning about polar bears.
We have a few Animal books and I found a good amount of information about polar bears. Good. Now I'm searching on the internet and twinkle platform some worksheets on the theme, maybe some crafts too. Worksheets examples: body parts of a polar bear, coloring, polar bear writting, count the polar bears etc.
And then I come up with other books we have like "The Planet Earth" or "Let's discover the world", from where we learn more about Arctic and the Poles, where the polar bears live, their habitat, their food, etc. And maybe a quick mention of other Arctic animals.
And this is how I integrate many disciplines on one topic only, so our learning time just became an intradisciplinar curricula.

So here they are: some of the activities we did in order to learn more about thr cold season.

Cotton Winter Tree

After looking over a few pages in one of our books called "The Seasons", we agreed to go outside and look for a small branch to make it look like winter.

It turned out really beautiful. We used cotton instead of snow.

This activity was meant only to work some fine motor skills and learning about nature by creating a white winter tree covered in snow.
It wasnt easy for Caleb to put all the cotton on the branch. I had to help him a bit.

Label the Snowman

Easy Learning English Words

I like these worksheets with labels. Over the time, we did a lot of them. O think they are effective for easy understanding.
And I love to use it for English Words learning.
We did only a few in Romanian. But overall, thats good to to reinforce some knowledge.

Winter Words and Language Skills

Another thing we did was to play with these flash cards (well, they were printed, as you can see).
We repeated the words both in Romanian and English.

After that, we played a game to make it more engaging for Caleb.
While I was cooking, Caleb continued to play with the cards.
I told him that he will receive a hug for every correct word he recognize it.
For example, I asked him to bring me the Snow card or the Penguin. He got it right, every card. The commands were in English. I asked " Can you bring me the penguin?", "What about Polar bear? Can you find it", "Lets find the Ice Skates" and so on. I would speak only in English.

After this, he played freely with the resources on the table.
We had there some sensorial colored rice and white cotton, meaning "The Poles".

He invented a sort of game with a road...whatever.

Then he put all cards face down and would pick one and guess what it was. He made me pick up cards too. It was nice seeing him making his own games and inventions.

Winter Clothes

Another thing that we learned were clothing items.

I found on Twinkl this list of winter clothes. In fact, there were a bunch of them and the kid had to match the items and form a winter look.

Adding to these cute colored winter clothes, we also watched 2 or 3 videos where the Clothes were presented in English language.

This is how we learn English

Additionally, we completed our learning time with this amazing book which I love so so much! These books are the best we have.

They are soo efficient when learning. They are audio books and they have an unique system of learning that brings a lot of information and fun. It brings new experiences with every book.
This book here is called Romanian English interactive dictionary.

Every time you touch with the pen, the book would say loud and clear the word according to where you put the electronic pen. The book has some sensors that reaf hidden codes. And the white electronic pen called "Albi" has a loud speaker that plays the souds at high quality.

Take a look to this video and right to the end you'll see exactly how this audio book works.
It has more than 5000 sounds and words, both in English and Romanian.

I hope you can get yourself an idea about how we learned all this and how we used these resources in order to gather more information.

And I hope you can use some of this at home, with your kids.

Thank you for reading and if you have some thoughts about all this, leave a comment down below!
