La seguridad vial es un tema que no es solo para los conductores de un vehículo, para cualquier persona que circule por una vía pública sea a pie, bicicleta o automóvil es indispensable conocer y respetar las normas diseñadas para garantizar nuestra seguridad y la de las otras personas que tienen el mismo derecho que nosotros de usar la vía pública.

Este es un tema que se debe enseñar a los niños desde temprana edad, no solo teniendo en cuenta que es para evitar un accidente sino porque también les enseña que debemos ser responsables cuando estamos en las calles, por nuestra seguridad y la de los demás. Por supuesto, esto empieza poniendo el ejemplo nosotros como padres, si nuestros niños observan que nos pasamos un alto o cruzamos la calle de forma indebida, difícilmente les haremos llegar el mensaje de que deben respetar las normas de tránsito.
This is a subject that should be taught to children from an early age, not only because it is to avoid an accident, but also because it teaches them that we must be responsible when we are on the streets, for our safety and that of others. Of course, this starts with us as parents setting the example, if our children observe us passing a stop sign or crossing the street improperly, we will hardly get the message across to them that they should respect traffic rules.
En las escuelas recuerdo que habían algunas iniciativas para incluir la educación vial, algunos maestros impartían algo de la teoría o realizaban charlas antes de realizar algún paseo escolar. Pero aunque los maestros se ocupen es un tema en el que los padres debemos prestar atención y brindar las nociones básicas o reforzar lo dado en clase en el hogar y por supuesto cada vez que salgamos a algún lugar. Cuando mi hijo quiso saber que significaban las luces del semáforo y de algunas señales en la calle entendí que era hora de profundizar en este tema, ya que sus primeras instrucciones se limitaron a señalar que hay que fijarse bien antes de cruzar o que siempre debe usar el cinturón de seguridad.
In schools I remember that there were some initiatives to include road safety education, some teachers taught some of the theory or gave talks before going on a school trip. But even though teachers take care of it, it is a subject in which parents should pay attention and provide the basic notions or reinforce what was given in class at home and of course every time we go out somewhere. When my son wanted to know what the traffic lights and some street signs meant, I understood that it was time to delve deeper into this topic, since his first instructions were limited to pointing out that he should look carefully before crossing the street or that he should always wear his seat belt.
El valor de las señales de transito / The value of traffic signals
Por lo general como adultos nos preocupan más las consecuencias económicas y legales de incumplir con las normas y leyes de tránsito, pero en el caso de los niños lo fundamental es enfocarse en la importancia de estar seguros en las calles.
Usually as adults we are more concerned about the economic and legal consequences of not complying with traffic laws and regulations, but in the case of children the most important thing is to focus on the importance of being safe on the streets.
Y para estar seguros en la vía la información básica que todos debemos manejar es el significado de las señales de tránsito. Bien sea como conductor o peatón los niños deben conocer las señales de tránsito más comunes y su significado, ya que en general ellas nos transmiten información sobre los lugares por donde debemos cruzar la calle, donde podemos tomar un autobús, si debemos tener una precaución especial en esa vía o hacia donde debemos dirigirnos para llegar a un lugar. En casa hemos hecho una exposición muy didáctica para conocer el significado de algunas de las señales de tránsito.
And to be safe on the road, the basic information we all need to know is the meaning of traffic signals. Whether as a driver or pedestrian, children should know the most common traffic signs and their meaning, since in general they transmit information about the places where we must cross the street, where we can take a bus, if we must take a special precaution on that road or where we must go to get to a place. Para este tema elaboramos un chaleco como el que utilizan los policías de transito reciclando un saco de papel, y luego de la exposición hemos pasado un tiempo jugando al policía de tránsito, haciendo imponer la ley jeje.
For this topic we made a vest like the one used by traffic police officers by recycling a paper sack, and after the exhibition we spent some time playing traffic police, enforcing the law hehe.
El paso de peatones / The pedestrian crossing
Identificar el rayado en las calles que marca el paso de los peatones es sin duda muy importante para los niños, muchos accidentes son causados por cruzar de forma indebida las calles, es por eso que los niños deben saber que para las personas que van a pie es una norma muy importante cruzar por donde se encuentra señalado con ese patrón de rayas en la calle. La mejor forma de entender esta norma es reforzarlo cuando salimos a la calle.
Identifying the stripes on the streets that mark the pedestrian crossing is undoubtedly very important for children, many accidents are caused by improperly crossing the streets, that is why children should know that for people on foot it is a very important rule to cross where it is marked with that striped pattern on the street. El semáforo / The traffic light
Como les dije una de las cosas que le llamo la atención a mi hijo fue saber el significado de las luces del semáforo. La teoría fue cubierta de forma sencilla y como a ellos más le gusta, mediante un juego. Simulamos la intersección de una vía y utilizamos juguetes para representar que un vehículo debe esperar frente a una luz roja, que puede proseguir cuando cambia a verde y que debe disminuir la velocidad y detenerse si al acercarse se encuentra en amarillo.
As I told you, one of the things that caught my son's attention was to know the meaning of the traffic lights. The theory was covered in a simple way and as they like the most, through a game. We simulated the intersection of a road and used toys to represent that a vehicle must wait at a red light, that it can proceed when it turns green and that it must slow down and stop if it is approaching a yellow light.

- La mejor manera de educar en este tema es por medio del ejemplo, cuando salgamos con los niños debemos respetar las normas de tránsito, esto incluye utilizar el cinturón de seguridad y no utilizar el celular al conducir, recordemos que ellos aprenden imitando a sus padres.
