The Cost of Living in Nigeria

A Brief Description of my country

Nigeria is an African country with 36 states in her, and each state is peculiar in its culture and cost of Living which is highly determined by the availability of certain food, and resources. Nigeria is divided into political zones; The North East, Northwest, Northcentral, South-South, South East, and South West. The North is occupied by the Hausa tribes whose major occupation is farming, and rearing of cattle while the South West is occupied by the Yoruba people who cultivate palm fruits and process cassava, and the southeast the Igbo people who are mainly businessmen and women, and the South-South, the Calabar people who catch fish and crayfish.

The South-South and southwest are riverine areas because of the persistent rainfall, while the North maintains two seasons; the rainy and dry season. The Hausa people do irrigation farming during the dry season because they're farmers.

Cost Of Living in my Country
Having understood the structure of my country, I will give a breakdown of the cost of living in the various states. Like I mentioned earlier, the cost of living is highly determined by the availability of food and certain resources, so, the cost of living in the northern regions is far lesser than in the southern regions, this is because the major occupation in the North is farming. The agricultural soil in the North is fertile for farming several crops such as maize, rice, beans, Millet, etc as well as fruits. This makes crops farmed in those areas very cheap to afford, and aside from the less cost of food in the North, their transportation is also very cheap as well as items of clothing except if it's an agbada and some traditional wears of the Hausa people.

The North is not comprised of only the Hausa people but of the various tribe like the Mada, Adara, Gbagyi, Nupe, Kamuku, Bajju, etc. They all are farmers and this makes certain food very cheap because of its high availability in that region.

Unlike the Northern regions, the Cost of Living in the southern regions is very high, example is delta state with poor agricultural soil, the cost of food is very high as well as the cost of transportation. The southeast where business is the major occupation suffers from the high cost of commodities and living. Both food, rent, Materials and transport system is very costly here, sometimes they travel to the North to get goods at a cheaper rate then sell them at a higher cost in the South East for profit.

Not everything is expensive in the South, with large rivers where fishing is their major occupation, fishes and crayfish are cheap there compare to the North. People from the North sometimes go to the south to buy fishes and crayfish and bring them to the North.

Difference between North and south in their cost of Living in Nigeria

NorthSouth
1. Food is cheap 2. Accommodation is cheap 3. Transportation is cheap 4. Fish and crayfish are expensive 5. The North has lesser job opportunities1. Food is costly 2. Accommodation is expensive 3. Transportation is expensive 4. Fish and crayfish are cheap 5. The South has more job opportunities

From the analysis, the northern part has a low Cost of living when compared to the southern part in my country Nigeria.
