Good day to you, Hive Critters.
Yesterday was a challenging day. @meveronicas and I left the house (do I end the post there?)
Turning a corner on the way back, we came upon four or five dogs chasing a small cat, barely bigger than Milho. They grabbed her at one point. She was belly up and I thought she might be done for despite our efforts to disperse them. But I was full on Mama-Beastmode and left @meveronicas cracking up still today. My brain hurled every phrase it could muster that might be effective, roaring in three languages as I ran at them. We made a good team, I think; Meves guarding the little kitty as she found her way to hide beneath a parked car.
While she lay under there catching her breath, we both guarded her and scared off the dogs' final attempts, until their interest wore away. We could see that her tits were full of milk, as tiny as she is. She looked too young to be pregnant. When we pulled her out, she didn't scratch or even swat, but she did growl. She really only wanted to hide her herself and wrapping her in Meves' coat to keep her from escaping wasn't necessary, although we did that for the doubts.
Truly at a loss as to how to proceed...we don't really even know people around here yet...we both get lost easily and decided to walk home to familiarize ourselves a bit more with the area...thankfully, we were close to the Veterinary Medicine school where Meves is a student because even the maps apps do not know well enough to help you find what you need here.
Forming a plan, we stashed the little kitty in a gated garden where she could hide and stay safe. We walked to the school and asked if there was any way that the clinic could see her right away. When we returned, she was still where we'd left her, and panting some... we worried she might be in labor. Worst of all, she was just beyond our reach in there although at least she didn't run from us.
And then I saw a beautiful tall lanky woman, who as it turned out is a classmate. She looked at me quite strangely, when I approached her and asked in my goofy sounding Spanish best, "Do you like animals..cats? Will you help us to help this little cat?" Once she heard the story, she was so eager to help, that even though her graceful, long arms were still not quite long enough...she went to her house to get some food to try to entice the kitty out. Eventually, the property owners pulled up and we were quite grateful that the mister gently lifted her and passed her through, instead of clapping and yelling to scare her out, or some other possibly crap reaction.
There is a lot more to tell. It was a crazy day and I had to cry myself calm when we got home. I want to condense it. The vet said that other than being quite dehydrated and hungry, she was ok. She is not pregnant, but recently gave birth and likely to babies that are alive, because she seems to have been nursing. Whether they nursed enough or her little body just can't continue nursing we don't know, but her milk seemed to be drying up... But she can't be sterilized just yet.
I spoke with people in the neighborhood all along the way, which included a lot of walking in circles, with this kitty who eventually got very calm and trusting, just trying to figure out what to do next. She is really sweet and seems to have or have had a home with humans, except for how hungry and dehydrated she was. She got some water asap, of course. Nobody recognized her as being their family or of any neighbor.
I asked the staff at the clinic for some contact/s who helps stray animals and thankfully they shared one with me. There are no shelters here like there are in the states and europe. Tho I'm new here, it seemed likely that as in the place I just moved from, there are at least networks of people who help in the ways that they are able. Some even turn their homes into Refugios which are usually very crowded and absolutely "bare bones."
This pretty little ladycat had to go back to the street, for various reasons. We found her a decent hidden spot, not far from where she was in the first place but where there are not so many dogs. If she was going to search out her babies, she wouldn't have far and it is close to the shop of some kind people who leave food out for the cats because as they said, "there are so many here." That neighborhood in particular, really is full of hugnry, filthy, desperate-looking cats and dogs as well.
This brings me to the what next. We have big plans for how much we will be able to help the wee-beasties once Meves graduates and we can open an animal clinic. But also, we are formulating plans for how to begin and do as much as we can in the meantime. Obviously, keeping track of and supporting this little girl cat from yesterday and getting her castrated when she is strong and healthy and ready...Hopefully we can find her again. We intend to find ways to raise funds to do what we can and to donate to the efforts already underway here.
As I had been working in this way before, I have another effort in the works as well: I wrote a children's story, which needs illustrations yet. I intend to create a series of similar true stories that illustrate loving-kind relationships with animals. The idea is to inspire a new vista to the rising generations, about how and WHY to be in respectful, loving relationship with other species. They will be bilingual teaching resources for the schools, in English and Spanish, and English and Portuguese. And I would like to offer them to the schools for free. And of course, available for sale otherwise also, which can help to make them a free resource for schools, many of which are in desperate need as well.
With this in mind, I'm going to use a seperate account on Hive at some point soon, in order to delegate what it can garner, to these efforts. @beameli is that account, which I already made "by accident" of onboarding challenges. There I can post veterinary bills, etc.
Great gratitude to the folks who have been connecting here in the Hive. There are some people who I would like to tag, who I haven't even interacted with personally, but whose own stories have kept the motivation and inspiration winning out over despair...but I do not want to cross any boundaries or make a social gaff and that is challenging to decipher sometimes for me. For now, I think I'm okay to say thank you specifically to @nikv. You are outstandingly kind.

Ayer fui un dia desafiante. @meveronicas y yo salimos de casa (¿termino ahí el post?)
Al doblar una esquina, en el camino de regreso, nos encontramos con cuatro o cinco perros persiguiendo a una gatita chiquita, apenas más grande que Milho. La agarraron en un momento. Estaba panza arriba y pensé que podría estar acabada a pesar de nuestros esfuerzos por dispersarlos. Pero estaba completamente de Modo MamaBestia y dejé a @meveronicas riendo todavía hoy. Mi cerebro lanzó cada frase que pudo reunir y que podría ser efectiva, gritando en tres idiomas mientras corría hacia los perros. Creo que formamos un buen equipo; Meves cuidando al pequeña gatita mientras encontraba la manera de esconderse debajo de un auto estacionado.
Mientras ella descansaba allí recuperandose el aliento, ambos la guardiamos y corrimos los últimos intentos de los perros, hasta que su interés se desvaneció. Pudimos ver que tenía las tetas llenas de leche, por muy pequeñita que sea. Parecía demasiado joven para estar embarazada. Cuando la sacamos, no se rascó ni siquiera golpeó, pero sí gruñaba. Ella realmente solo quería esconderla ella misma y no era necesario envolverla en el abrigo de Meves para evitar que escapara, aunque lo hicimos por las dudas.
Realmente no sabemos cómo proceder... ni siquiera conocemos gente por aquí todavía... ambos nos perdemos fácilmente y decidimos caminar a casa para familiarizarnos un poco más con el área... afortunadamente, Estábamos cerca de la escuela de Medicina Veterinaria donde Meves estudia porque ni siquiera las aplicaciones de mapas saben lo suficientemente bien como para ayudarte a encontrar lo que necesitas aqui.
Elaborando un plan, escondimos al pequeña gatita en un jardín cerrado donde podría esconderse y mantenerse a salvo. Caminamos hasta la escuela y preguntamos si había alguna manera de que la clínica pudiera atenderla de inmediato. Cuando regresamos, ella todavía estaba donde la habíamos dejado, y jadeando un poco... nos preocupaba que pudiera estar de parto. Lo peor de todo es que estaba fuera de nuestro alcance allí dentro, aunque al menos no huyó de nosotros.
Y luego vi a una hermosa mujer alta y larguirucha, que resultó ser una compañera de clase. Ella me miró de forma bastante extraña cuando me acerqué a ella y le pregunté en mi español más tonto: "¿Te gustan los animales... los gatos? ¿Nos ayudarás a ayudar a este pequeño gato?" Una vez que escuchó la historia, estaba tan ansiosa por ayudar, que aunque sus elegantes y largos brazos aún no eran lo suficientemente largos... fue a su casa a buscar algo de comida para intentar atraer a la gata. Finalmente, los dueños de la propiedad se detuvieron y estábamos muy agradecidos de que el señor la levantara suavemente y la pasara, en lugar de aplaudir y gritar para asustarla o alguna otra posible reacción desagradable.
Hay mucho más que contar. Fue un día loco y tuve que llorar pa'tranquilizarme cuando llegamos a casa. Quiero condensarlo. El veterinario dijo que, aparte de estar bastante deshidratada y hambrienta, estaba bien. No está embarazada, pero recientemente dio a luz y probablemente tenga bebés vivos, porque parece haber estado amamantando. No sabemos si amamantaron lo suficiente o su cuerpecito simplemente no puede seguir amamantando, pero su leche parecía estar secándose... Pero todavía no puede ser esterilizada.
Hablé con gente del barrio durante todo el camino, que incluyó muchas caminatas en círculos, con este gatita que eventualmente se volvió muy pero muy tranquila y confiada en los brazos de Meves, solo tratando de descubrir qué hacer a continuación. Ella es realmente dulce y parece tener o haber tenido un hogar con humanos, excepto por lo hambrienta y deshidratada que estaba. Por supuesto, consiguió un poco de agua lo antes posible. Nadie la reconoció como de su familia ni de ningún vecino.
Le pedí al personal de la clínica algunos contactos que ayudaran a los animales callejeros y afortunadamente compartieron uno conmigo. Aquí no hay refugios como en el norte y europa. Aunque soy nuevo aquí, parecía probable que, como en el lugar del que me acabo de mudar, haya al menos redes de personas que ayuden en la medida que puedan. Algunos incluso convierten sus hogares en refugios, que suelen estar muy poblados y son absolutamente "básicos".
Esta lindita tuvo que volver a la calle, por diversos motivos. Le encontramos un lugar escondido decente, no lejos de donde estaba en primer lugar, pero donde no hay tantos perros. Si fuera a buscar a sus bebes no estaría muy lejos y está cerca de la tienda de unas gentes amables que dejan comida para los gatos porque como decían "aquí hay muchísimos". Ese barrio en particular está lleno de perros y gatos con mucha hambre, sucios y de aspecto desesperado.
Esto me lleva a lo que sigue. Tenemos grandes planes sobre cuánto podremos ayudar a las pequeñas bestias una vez que Meves se gradúe y podamos abrir una clínica de animales. Pero también estamos formulando planes sobre cómo empezar y hacer todo lo que podamos mientras tanto. Obviamente, seguir y apoyar a esta pequeña gata de ayer y castrarla cuando esté fuerte, sana y lista... Ojalá podamos encontrarla nuevamente. Tenemos la intención de encontrar formas de recaudar fondos para hacer lo que podamos y donar a los esfuerzos que ya se están llevando a cabo aquí.
Como ya había trabajado de esta manera antes, también tengo otro esfuerzo en proceso: escribí un cuento para niños, que aún necesita ilustraciones. Tengo la intención de crear una serie de historias reales similares que ilustren vinculos amorosas con los animales. La idea es inspirar una nueva visión para las nuevas generaciones sobre cómo y POR QUÉ tener una relación respetuosa y amorosa con otras especies. Serán recursos didácticos bilingües para los colegios, en inglés y español, e inglés y portugués. Y me gustaría ofrecerlos a las escuelas de forma gratuita. Y, por supuesto, también están disponibles para la venta, lo que puede ayudar a convertirlos en un recurso gratuito para las escuelas, muchas de las cuales también lo necesitan desesperadamente.
Con esto en mente, voy a usar una cuenta separada en Hive en algún momento pronto, para delegar lo que pueda obtener a estos esfuerzos. @beameli es esa cuenta, que ya hice "por accidente" de los desafíos de incorporación. Allí puedo publicar facturas veterinarias, etc.
Gran gratitud a las personas que se han estado conectando aquí en Hive. Hay algunas personas a las que me gustaría etiquetar, con quienes ni siquiera he interactuado personalmente, pero cuyas propias historias han mantenido la motivación y la inspiración venciendo a la desesperación... pero no quiero cruzar ningún límite ni hacer un error social y eso a veces me resulta difícil descifrar.
