Greetings to the entire #zonadeescalofrios community and fans of horror and the paranormal. This is my participation in the initiative "The prophecies of 2024 in #ZDE!".
I appreciate the invitation from my dear @felixmarranz to participate in this proposal and invite @cositav and @janaveda to take part. I leave the link to this call for participation:
If we look up the entry "prophet" or "prophetess" in the RAE dictionary, we can read, among other meanings, that it is any person who "by previously made signs or calculations, conjectures and predicts future events".
I believe that this definition encompasses a wide range of professions and practices, which include both scientists predicting future events based on mathematical models, and practitioners of taseomancy. And I can assure you that, in the decades I have lived, I have known multiple people who predict future events through calculations, signs, or conjectures.

Si buscamos en el diccionario de la RAE en la entrada profeta o profetisa podemos leer, además de otras acepciones, que es toda persona que “por señales o cálculos hechos previamente, conjetura y predice acontecimientos futuros”.
Esta definición creo que da cabida a una amplia gama de profesiones y prácticas, que incluyen desde el científico que hace pronósticos sobre acontecimientos futuros en base a modelos matemáticos, hasta los/as practicantes de la taseomancia. Y puedo asegurar que, en las décadas que he vivido, he conocido múltiples personas que predicen acontecimientos futuros mediante cálculos, señales o conjeturas.

AGENDA 2000: EXTERMINATION OF THE "EXCESS" POPULATION ☠️😨
The great Andreas Faber-Kaiser, director of Mundo Desconocido, probably the best publication on para-science in Spanish to this day, predicted in the 1990s a great holocaust, which in my opinion did not come true:

Conspiracy theories are not new, Mundo Desconocido was already responsible for spreading them, and in this case, "the enlightened ones," now called illuminati, would be the elite who have ruled humanity since time immemorial, in the shadows, with the sole interest, it seems, of causing harm.
The figure of 2.4 billion people was really immense, truly unbelievable. It must be taken into account that in 1993, when this prophecy was published, there were 5 billion people inhabiting the Earth. That is, it was predicted that half of humanity would disappear in 17 years. A prediction that took for granted the official hypothesis of AIDS. HIV would have been a laboratory-made virus, created for the sole purpose of reducing the human population on Earth. Faber-Kaiser accepts the official hypothesis of AIDS, without question, without listening to dissident AIDS scientists, simply because it fit his worldview. It is not a matter of denying conspiracies, which exist, but of exposing the fact that being "awake" is not a guarantee of critical thinking.

El gran Adreas Faber-Kaiser, director de la desaparecida Mundo Desconocido, probablemente la mejor publicación sobre para-ciencia en español hasta la actualidad, vaticinó en los años 90 del siglo pasado un gran holocausto, que a mi parecer no se cumplió:
“Los planes de nuestros gobernantes para exterminar a la humanidad sobrante. Su objetivo: aniquilar a 2.400 millones de seres humanos hasta el año 2000.

El vaticinio se basaba en un pre-juicio, es decir, en un juicio o idea previa, y el afán de que la realidad se sujetara a estas conclusiones previas. Las teorías de la conspiración no son nuevas, Mundo Desconocido ya se encargó en su momento de difundirlas y en este caso “los iluminados”, ahora llamados illuminati, formarían parte de la élite que gobernarían a la humanidad desde tiempos inmemoriales, en la sombra, con el único interés, parece ser, de hacer daño.
La cifra de 2.400 millones de personas era una cifra realmente enorme, realmente increíble. Hay que tener en cuenta que en 1993, cuando se publica esta profecía, en la Tierra habitábamos 5.000 millones de personas. Es decir, se vaticinaba que en 17 años iba a desaparecer la mitad de la humanidad. Predicción que daba por cierta la hipótesis oficial del SIDA.
El VIH habría sido un virus de laboratorio, fabricado con el único objeto de reducir la población humana sobre la Tierra. Faber-Kaiser toma la hipótesis oficial del SIDA, sin contrastarla, sin escuchar a los científicos disidentes del SIDA, simplemente porque encajaba con su cosmogonía. No se trata de negar las conspiraciones, que las hay, sino de exponer el hecho de que ser o estar “despierto” no es garantía de pensamiento crítico.

THE AIDS VIRUS AND WORLD DEPOPULATION ☠️😱
This brings me to another prophecy, that of the official version of AIDS. Faber-Kaiser's prediction may seem outrageous, but it captured the core of the official AIDS theory.   Another prophecy that I have experienced is related to the pharmaceutical industry, corrupt scientists, inept politicians, and pain. In the late nineties, some health experts and healthcare institutions calculated that about 100 million people in the United States were suffering from chronic pain and asked for a solution to such suffering.
The Veterans Health Administration launched an initiative in 1999 for pain to become the "fifth vital sign," equating pain with body temperature, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate. In this way, pain could already be managed like the other four vital signs, objectively. It could be measured like cholesterol, and at the end of the evaluation, of course, the miraculous medicine was found: opioid drugs.
In 1999, it was announced to the world that humanity was entering a new era, a world without pain. The result of the massive use of opioids driven by health authorities, experts, and the pharmaceutical industry culminated in a health catastrophe: the opioid epidemic in the United States. To get an idea of this disaster, it is enough to mention that life expectancy in the United States dropped because of this cause. Currently, more than half a million people are counted who have been led to the cemetery by the "science" of pain. One case, like many others, in which human activity, along with greed, has left a trail overflowing with corpses.

Otra profecía que he vivido está relacionada con la industria farmacéutica, científicos corruptos, políticos ineptos y con el dolor. A finales de los años noventa algunos expertos en en el área de la salud e instituciones sanitarias calcularon que en en Estados Unidos vivían unos 100 millones de personas que sufrían dolor crónico y pidieron una solución a tanto sufrimiento.
La organización Veterans Health Administration lanzó una iniciativa en 1999 para que el dolor se convirtiera en el “quinto signo vital”, equiparando el dolor con la temperatura corporal, la presión arterial, la frecuencia respiratoria y la frecuencia cardiaca. De esta forma, el dolor ya se podía manejar como los otros cuatro signos vitales, de forma objetiva. Se podía medir como el colesterol y al final de la evaluación, claro, se encontraba la medicina milagrosa: los fármacos opioides.
En 1.999 se anunciaba al mundo que la humanidad entraba en una nueva era, un mundo sin dolor. El resultado del uso masivo de opiáceos impulsado por autoridades sanitarias, expertos y la industria farmacéutica, culminó en un desastre sanitario: la epidemia de opioides en Estados Unidos. Para hacerse una idea de esta catástrofe basta con mencionar que la esperanza de vida en Estados Unidos bajó por esta causa. En la actualidad, se cuentan más de medio millón de personas las que han sido conducidas al cementerio por la “ciencia” del dolor. Un caso, como tantos otros, en los que la actividad humana, junto a la codicia, ha dejado un reguero rebosante de cadáveres.

LOCKDOWNS SAVE LIVES ☠️😷

CLIMATE CHANGE - GLOBAL COOLING 🧊💀

What happens when the prophecy fails? Well, life goes on as usual, like Julio Iglesias song. Believers find a way to come up with any explanation that doesn't challenge their beliefs. This brings us to Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance. This theory implies the idea that everyone, without exception, desires to self-deceive and distort facts.
Going back to the question. If a religious group, or any other group, announces the arrival of the end of the world, sets a date, and the end of the world doesn't come, they could argue that it didn't happen thanks to their prayers.
The theory of cognitive dissonance distinguishes between soft beliefs and core beliefs, or significant beliefs, those that give meaning to our lives or in which we have dedicated time and sacrifice.
When one of these significant beliefs is questioned, or even denied by reality as in the case of an unfulfilled prophecy, the usual response is a stronger commitment to defending the significant belief.
The more effort we put into a task, the more difficulties we will encounter in recognizing that we were wrong, that the effort was in vain, that we have been deceived, or that we have caused harm to others. The more external support the erroneous idea has, the more reluctance we will have to change it.
After about seventy years, Festinger seems to be right, the response to the disconfirmation of significant ideas consists of searching for elements consistent with our beliefs, such as seeking supporting opinions, evidence that seems to say, avoiding opposing opinions, etc.
Therefore, when a belief is significant and we encounter dissonant elements that question this belief, we try to save it by reducing the dissonance. A good way to maintain beliefs is to have only one source of information, avoiding any information that calls our opinions into question. Or simply, we can refuse to think, and discrediting the source is enough, for example, telling ourselves that the source of the dissonance "talks like a denier".
Cognitive dissonance occurs when two beliefs are incompatible with each other, according to a person's premises. We can say that cognitive dissonance is present almost all the time. But it only reaches significant levels when one of the elements has a meaningful value for the person. When the questioned belief is of no importance to the person, the amount of dissonance is small and easy to modify. For example: I believe that Madagascar is a sport until I find out it is a country through the news. The dissonance is small and I modify my beliefs.
Therefore, dissonance arises more frequently in situations that involve the most personal decisions and behaviors.

¿Qué ocurre cuando la profecía falla? Pues que la vida sigue igual, como en la canción de Julio Iglesias. Los creyentes se las ingenian para encontrar cualquier explicación que no cuestione sus creencias. Esto nos lleva a la teoría de la disonancia cognitiva de Festinger. Esta teoría implica la idea de que todo el mundo, sin excepción, desea auto-engañarse y sesgar los hechos.
Volviendo a la pregunta. Si un grupo religioso, o de otro tipo, anuncia la llegada del fin del mundo, se le ocurre poner una fecha, y el fin del mundo no llega, podría argumentar que no llegó gracias a sus oraciones.
La teoría de la disonancia cognitiva diferencia entre creencias blandas y creencias nucleares, o significativas, aquellas que dan sentido a nuestra vida o en las que hemos dedicado tiempo y sacrificio.
Cuando una de estas creencias significativas es cuestionada, o incluso negada por la realidad como en el caso de una profecía no cumplida, la respuesta suele ser un mayor empeño en la defensa de la creencia significativa.
Cuanto más esfuerzo ponemos en una tarea, más dificultades encontraremos en reconocer que nos hemos equivocado, que el esfuerzo ha sido inútil, que nos han engañado o que hemos provocado daño a otras personas. Cuanto mayor apoyo externo tiene la idea errónea más reparos pondremos a cambiarla.
Pasados unos setenta años, Festinger parece tener razón, la respuesta a la des-confirmación de ideas significativas consiste en la búsqueda de elementos consistentes con nuestras creencias, como buscar opiniones que nos apoyen, indicios que parece que dicen, evitar opiniones contrarias, etc.
Por tanto, cuando una creencia es significativa y nos encontramos con elementos disonantes que cuestionan esta creencia tratamos de salvarla disminuyendo la disonancia. Una buena forma de mantener las creencias es acudir a una sola fuente de información, o a varias que confirmen nuestras creencias, evitando cualquier dato que ponga en duda nuestras opiniones. O simplemente, podemos negarnos a pensar, y con desacreditar la persona que produce la disonancia es suficiente, por ejemplo, nos decimos de la fuente de la disonancia que “habla como un/a negacionista” y se acabó el debate.
La disonancia cognitiva se produce cuando dos creencias son incompatibles, una con la otra, según las premisas de una persona. Podemos decir que la disonancia cognitiva está presente en casi todo momento. Pero sólo alcanza cantidades importantes cuando uno de los elementos tiene un significado de valor para la persona.
Si la creencia cuestionada carece de importancia para la persona la cantidad de disonancia es pequeña y fácil de modificar. Por ejemplo: yo creo que la Torre de Pisa es un deporte, hasta que por el telediario me entero de que es un monumento. La disonancia es pequeña y modifico mi creencia.
La disonancia surge, por tanto, con mayor frecuencia en situaciones que implican las decisiones y las conductas más personales.

No me voy a despedir sin hacer referencia a las predicciones publicadas en la revista “Alien” el año 1982. La revista, con la temática ciencia y lo sobrenatural, tuvo una corta vida, como muchas de las cosas que me gustan. En su número tres se publicó una “historia del futuro” que decía tomar como guía la ciencia. En concreto la psicohistoria de Hari Seldon. Decía así la revista:
Aplicando sus principios [de la psicohistoria] con un método preciso, los acontecimientos del año 3.000 pueden ser descritos tan fácilmete como los de 1981.
