Here is @lemouth again, for the first edition of the STEMsocial Distilled of October 2022. Sorry for being late, but I am just quite busy. That happens, what can I say. Grant applications cannot wait...
Anyway, let's go back to the topic. For those who are unaware of what a STEM Distilled, let's just say that it is a weakly blog aiming to shed light on five of the best blogs posted in the STEMsocial community during the previous week. This post was hence due... since last Monday. But, better late than never.
My selection relies on various criteria that include engagement/receptivity, quality and diversity of topics. Moreover, any single author cannot be featured more than once in four consecutive editions. That guarantees that many different authors have their chance!

Today, I selected many posts related to healthcare (we have a lot of people with a medical job on STEMsocial), programming... and space missions. We cannot write the present Distilled blog without referring the the DART mission about which I hope everyone has heard. Therefore, without waiting for any extra useless sentence, here is the list for the current edition.

Goiter and thyroid emergencies
This week, my top choice was a blog by @alidickson on goiter emergencies. I can clear say that the first image chosen to illustrate the blog influenced my choice. This is however part of the game. In this post, readers will be able to lean about goiter, and how our thyroid gland could sometimes ruin our lives. Although this disease is rare in our countries, this is not the case worldwide, and it is therefore good to know a bit about the topic. Consequently, please consider giving this blog a visit.
I understand how a heart attack affects
Heart attacks! Suddenly, our blood cannot circulate freely anymore in our organism. And this is a big big problem, as oxygen cannot circulate too. Obviously, I recall that life is synonym of oxygen usage, more or less. In their last blog, @apineda discusses this very important topic, and explains to us what a heart attack is exactly and how the problem originate. BAD in Nigeria 4/7-Discussions (Demographics Part 1)
Is BAD really bad? Well not really. BAD stands for Bipolar Affective Disorder, and one of our STEMsocial doctors, @ebingo, started a series about a study made in Nigeria. In the post selected for this Distilled (all posts of the series are very interesting, but I picked this one because... well... I can), the author investigates the impact of the sample of patients that was used for the study, who they were, what were their backgrounds, etc. Do we have some bias here? I let you check the post to guess the answer...
Understanding Python Decorators
For the fourth post of this distilled, I decided to change the topic a little and move on wit programming. The current post, written by @monioluwa, has nothing to do with snakes. It concerns the Python programming language, and a set of functions called decorators. They allow to somewhat upgrade an existing function and equip it with new properties. I won't give more details here, but if you are interested feel free to check the post!
Successful impact!
September 26, a milestone in the space programme of the NASA was reached. The mission DART was a total success. They fired a spacecraft of about 600 kg straight into an asteroid that had a diametre of 160 metres, more or less. The goal? Modify its trajectory. The reason: save Earth if needed in the future. What a mission. For now, we however need to wait for the analysis of the results of the mission. For more information, consider checking this blog written by @emiliomoron.
