In Shanghai, a new pilot program has deployed a humanoid robot named Lingxi X2 to work alongside human urban enforcement officers. The images you’re seeing are real, though they’re not exactly of the robot I’m talking about, but of others that are also already in use in China. Unfortunately, I was only able to find this photo of Lingxi X2 working alongside police officers and talking to people.
The project is taking place in the Zhangjiang Innovation City in the Pudong district, where drones, police officers, and humanoid robots now operate together in a coordinated urban management system. The operation seems almost like a preview of administrative science fiction. First, drones monitor the streets in real time, looking for irregularities related to street vendors and street commerce.
When they detect something, they immediately send the information to human officers and also to the nearest humanoid robots. That’s where the Lingxi X2 comes in. According to the Chinese company Edbot, the robot was trained to explain urban regulations, answer questions, interpret public policies, and guide vendors on local legislation. It functions as a kind of physical bureaucratic intermediary powered by artificial intelligence.

And perhaps this signals a significant shift in the role of humanoids, because until now much of the industry has focused on physical strength, balance, and industrial automation, but systems like the Lingxi X2 are beginning to explore a new frontier: functional social interaction in real public spaces. The local government itself states that humans remain responsible for legal decisions and regulatory authority. The robot acts solely as an operational and communicational support, and this is just the beginning.
Chinese experts say this project represents a major step toward transforming humanoids from simple moving machines into systems capable of working effectively within society—in other words, the race is no longer just about creating impressive robots; it’s about making these machines economically useful in real human environments. Little by little, cities are beginning to test something new: a daily coexistence between embedded artificial intelligence and public life.
And this advancement in humanoid robotics is not happening only in China.
