Carbohydrates, Sugar and Blood Sugar Association Myths

I was discussing fashion with a friend yesterday who was just coming from the gym. She was heavily consuming energy drink a lot and was telling me that she was going to consume more carbs so she can have more energy to exercise. I was very surprised to see that she is going to the gym to reduce her size but still consuming lots of carbs to get more energy. A lot of us have wrong beliefs and knowledge about carbohydrates and blood sugar or energy.

First, the amount of carbs you eat is not equivalent to the amount of energy you get. Carbohydrates are used to give energy but then when there are excesses, they become converted to glycogen or fat which is stored in the body. While we can convert glucose to fat, our bodies cannot convert fat to glucose. Fatty acids can’t be used to synthesize glucose but glucose is stored as triglycerides which can be turned into glucose which is used as energy., , .

While talking to her, she said that blood sugar problem is only associated with old people. Just as she said, there are a lot of people who also believe that people who have high blood sugar are people above 65 years and are diabetic, so people who are younger do not have. In the past, diabetes was regarded as Adult Onset Diabetes, but now, things have changed in recent times. Your belief is currently wrong and anyone can suffer from high blood sugar at any younger age. When you eat lots of processed food with high carbs and then you do a job that keeps you still or sedentary works and the use of seed oils and vegetable oils can allow insulin resistance disease which is why people now start having type-2 diabetes even as young ones. According to research published by BMJ, there has been an increase in the early onset of type 2 diabetes in adolescents and young adults globally..

My dad is very fond of taking orange juice and he would say that it is not really a big deal since he is taking the orange juice that has the inscription "no added sugar" He believes when it is written 100% orange or 100% fresh orange, then it is very healthy for him. While doing my research on Blood sugar, I came across a study on Orange juice, 100% Fresh Orange Juice, and Nectar- Sweetened Orange Juice and their Effect on Blood Glucose and Insulin Levels in middle-aged Chinese men and women living in Singapore. Its cumulative evidence showed that 100% Fruit juice was positively associated with an increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes. .

Let me quickly say that all sugars are not the same. While looking through Glycemic index which is how fast carb increases blood sugar, against the Glycemic load which is how much of the carb is consumed. So if you are taking carbohydrates that have a high Glycemic index and are taking at a high Glycemic load, then this can cause an increase in insulin which will later cause insulin resistance which will lead to an increase in blood sugar. Glucose is bad but is worse. Another funny thing is believing that eating little carbohydrates at frequent intervals will cause an increase in blood sugar levels. From a study, eating 6 times instead of 3 times showed a decrease in blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes patients but their weight wasn't affected obesity is also a risk factor so while it can help stabilize blood sugar, it doesn't affect weight loss. .
