It’s very rare to go to the beach and not find someone building sandcastles or other sculptures with the sand. What’s most surprising is when we come across true artists creating incredible works of art using only sand and water.
In the city where I used to live, Cabo Frio, in the Região dos Lagos of Rio de Janeiro, it was quite common to see these large sculptures being made on Praia do Forte.
While I was still working on-site there, I even had the chance to talk to one of these artists – the creator of the two sculptures in this post.
Rafael Tavares is well-known in the region for making sacred figures and sandcastles on the beaches. He’s from São João de Meriti, in the Baixada Fluminense area, and has been dedicated to this art for over 20 years. At the time I spoke with him, I remember him telling me that he started making these sculptures when he lived on the streets and slept on the sands of Copacabana, in Rio.
These sculptures attract a lot of attention, not only from tourists but also from locals. Personally, I think the sandcastles are stunning!

É muito raro irmos à praia e não encontrarmos alguém fazendo castelinhos ou outras esculturas com a areia. O mais surpreende disso é quando realmente encontramos verdadeiros artistas fazendo incríveis obras de arte apenas usando areia e água.
Na cidade onde eu morava anteriormente, Cabo Frio, na Região dos Lagos do Rio de Janeiro, era bem comum essas mega esculturas sendo feitas na Praia do Forte.
Quando ainda trabalha inloco por lá, tive a oportunidade até mesmo de conversar com um desses artistas - que é o autor das duas esculturas desse post.
O Rafael Tavares é bastante conhecido na região por fazer essas figuras sacras e castelos de areia nas praias. Ele é de São João de Metiri, na Baixada Fluminense, e se dedica à arte há mais de 20 anos. Na época que conversei com ele, lembro que ele me contou que começou a fazer essas esculturas quando morava na rua e dormia nas areias de Copacabana, no Rio.
As esculturas chamam muita atenção não só apenas dos turistas, mas dos moradores da cidade também. Eu, particularmente, acho os castelos lindíssimos!
