Evening at the Rhine Falls

A friend from Prague is visiting me this week to help me with the garden while my husband is traveling, so last night I took her to the Rhine Falls as were working hard all day and deserved some time just chatting and enjoying our surroundings.

Let me take you with us too! 🙂

We were in the garden planting peppers all day, and in the late afternoon we decided to go for a walk and enjoy the sunset at the Rhine Falls. We were exhausted from the work as well as heat, so a walk in nature among the trees was the right choice to finish our day.

We started our walk in Schaffhausen and walked along the river Rhine to the waterfalls. The walk is about 5 kilometres long and as it's very enjoyable. We came across many families with kids and there were also a few tourists which is normal for spring.

It was still hot, so we got our first ice cream of the year. I am not the biggest fan of ice cream, but when the weather is like this I enjoy a scoop or two 🙂 And I never refuse pistachio! We had a long walk ahead of us and we needed some energy too.

I love the views along the river. One day, I will try to go on a boat like the one that you can see in the back. Those people were returning from their trip. This is where the most boats dock as there is a dam further down the way which cannot be passed. They spend some time at the lake Constance in Germany, and then they return to Schaffhausen.

We were talking and talking, and suddenly we were in front of the waterfalls already! It was getting dark and the light was soft. It was pretty. And there was so much water! The waterfalls are at their strongest in spring when the snow melts in the mountains. I haven't seen it so big in a long time.

This part is usually dried up in winter, so you can imagine how much bigger it is now. Luckily, Switzerland has a great system of avoiding floods, so there is no risk of that.

The light and the water looked like a postcard. It was getting late, and there was a soft breeze, so we were enjoying the coolness after the hot day. And those views!

You can get to the rocks in the middle by a small boat. They drop you at the bottom, and then you climb the stairs to the top of the rocks. I must admit that I have never done it as those boats look so wobbly and the waves are really big, so I'm afraid I would get sick. But one day I will have to try as I know many people who did it and they loved the experience so much.

The bridge is used by trains, but there are pathways for pedestrians too, and you can cross the river there to get to the other side of the waterfalls.

9.jpg

On the other side, there is the Schloss Laufen. It is used for events and celebrations, and there is also a good restaurant that you can visit. From there you can take a lift down to the waterfalls. This is an amazing experience and if you happen to be here don't miss out on this opportunity.

There is a promenade on the right side which is always full of people. This is the place from where you get the best views of the waterfalls.

Let's go down to the promenade...

Rhine Falls have incredible power, and you can feel it when you stand close by...

13.jpg

This is where you can see countless boats during the day...

And here we are! We approached the promenade, but we will walk further to get better views...

It is impossible to capture the size and the strength of the Rhine Falls. They are not very high, but they are wide and there is enormous volume of water that falls down every second.

My friend loved the experience and asked me to come back. We will definitely take time to return here this week as it never gets boring here.

See you next time...
