Actually, there are other sports where it's not just the performance itself that matters, but also (or mainly) the precision and appearance. Figure skating, gymnastics... and majorettes are among them.
And the other thing was that the choreography of a given performance is not (or does not have to be) fixed from start to finish. That is to say, the whole thing is done in such a way that the leader (or commander, or whatever the leader is actually called correctly) uses rehearsed signals to direct the whole team, orchestrate it, and show what her unit is supposed to do behind her. So when the majorettes have, say, a five-minute performance, it doesn't mean that they have rehearsed and drilled those five minutes as a compact unit, but that the teamleader has been using agreed gestures and signals the whole time to show her team how to change formations and what figures to do. So no two performances are exactly the same. On the other hand, it requires all team members to keep a constant eye on both the team leader and the surrounding team members and to respond to the signals given. It's probably not as simple and easy as it looks.
The majorettes also have their own age categories: littlekadettes, cadettes, juniors and seniors - the latter ranging from 15 to 26 years old, which gives the term "seniors" a rather charming meaning.
I was wondering, are there also "boy majorettes"? Or are there boys involved in this sport? To be honest, I haven't been able to find anything. Perhaps the closest thing to it is special military units like the Castle Guard Display Team (or the Silent Drill Platoon of the US Marine Corps), but there I feel it's in a different league altogether and comparing them to majorettes might seem like a slight dehumanizing comparison. Vlastně jsou i jiné sporty, kde nezáleží jen na výkonu samotném, ale také (nebo hlavně) na precizním provedení a vzhledu. Krasobruslení, sportovní gymnastika... a mažoretky patří mezi ně.
A ta druhá věc byla to, že choreografie daného vystoupení není (nebo nemusí být) pevně určená od začátku do konce. Totiž celé to probíhá tak, že leaderka (nebo velitelka nebo jak se ta vedoucí vlastně správně označuje) pomocí nacvičených signálů řídí celý tým, diriguje ho a ukazuje, co má ten její útvar za ní dělat. Takže když mají mažoretky třeba pětiminutové vystoupení, tak to neznamená, že mají těch pět minut nacvičených, nadrilovaných jako kompaktní celek, ale že teamleaderka celou tu dobu pomocí dohodnutých gest a signálů ukazuje svému týmu, jak má měnit formace a jaké má dělat figury. Takže žádná dvě vystoupení nejsou úplně stejná. Na druhou stranu to vyžaduje od všech členek týmu, aby neustále pozorně sledovaly jednak velitelku, jednak okolní členky týmu a reagovaly na dané signály. Asi to není až tak jednoduché a lehké, jak to vypadá.
Mažoretky mají i své věkové kategorie: littlekadetky, kadetky, juniorky a seniorky - ty poslední jsou v rozmezí 15 až 26 let, což dává pojmu "seniorky" poměrně půvabný význam.
Ještě mě napadlo, jsou i "mažoreti"? Resp. věnují se tomuto sportu i chlapci? Popravdě řečeno, nepodařilo se mi nic dohledat. Nejblíž k tomu snad mají speciální vojenské jednotky jako Display team Hradní stráže (nebo Silent Drill Platoon americké námořní pěchoty), ale tam cítím, že je to docela jiná liga a přirovnání k mažoretkám by jim mohlo připadat jako lehce dehonestující. Nebo ne?
