Ice Walk In Sunny But Chilly Weather

I went to the harbor today afternoon. I took some shots.

When I took this I was already on the ice. It's a good thing there was no one on the balconies. Because of privacy laws I couldn't have taken this picture let alone publish it. Private spaces themselves are not protected, only people in them.

These people are free game because the lake ice is a public space. If someone does not want to be photographed in a public space the photographer can agree not to do so at their own discretion. It is considered polite not to take pictures of anyone against their will. But if someone in a public space ends up in your photograph even as the main subject against their own will they have no legal recourse unless that image is damaging to them in any way. The right to take photographs in a public space is protected by the constitution (freedom of speech).

I don't know about the law in your country but here (Finland), if someone who has spotted you taking photos of themselves comes up to you and demands that you do not take any pictures of them you don't have to but it is polite to agree not to. But if they're rude, you can inform them that since you're polite, you agree not to take pictures they're in but that otherwise they can fuck off.

These ice roads are popular.

This is a former coast guard boat built in the 1950s. I don't know why it was brought here. It's not even a museum although I think the owner could make some money off of it by allowing people to come and take a tour in it.

That ship is used as a restaurant and as a cruise ship during the summer.

There was a man repairing a nearby smokestack. As you can see there is motor hanging from the edge directly above him. He must have been pulled up and down by a winch.

He's got welding equipment with him. That's not a particularly nice job to do. The temperature outside was not colder than -2 C but the north wind blowing from the lake was pretty brutal.
