For Every Season

Ah, the fall. It's a time of mixed emotions for us Northern inhabitants, as the nights grow longer, and the days grow colder, reminding us of that universal truth, winter is coming.

As the leaves receive less light and warmth, their colours begin turning from green to yellows, reds, and earthy browns.

Not all is loss and decay. Some plants become productive this time of the year, and they are just as extravagant as if they were in the full bloom of Spring.

There is someone hiding in there

Nature is mighty and yet life is so fragile. At least on this planet it is. Just look how easily it transforms in light of changing conditions. The temperature has been hovering around 15 deg C (59 F) and falling. I do take joy in knowing that approximately 29,000 to 15,000 years ago, this land was buried under an ice sheet 1200 meters thick. It covered the whole province. Now, in spite of the coming winter, life shows its resilience when given the chance with a little warmth- so thank you South Pacific.

Some plants are ready for action all year round.

But others dormant they will lie until spring returns.
