Un gratificante paseo me llevó a conocer y contemplar más de cerca a un cardumen lleno de colores, los llamados peces koi. En una visita que hice al Centro comercial Sambil, Estado Nueva Esparta, Venezuela, pude atesorar varias capturas de estos lindos pececillos. La verdad es que estas criaturas adornan cualquier estanque gracias a sus radiantes y bellos colores.
A gratifying walk took me to meet and get a closer look at a colorful school of koi fish. On a visit I made to the Sambil Shopping Mall, Nueva Esparta State, Venezuela, I was able to treasure several catches of these cute little fish. The truth is that these creatures adorn any pond thanks to their radiant and beautiful colors.
El Centro Comercial Sambil es muy grande y hermoso, pero su principal atracción son los peces Koi. La gente se acerca a la pequeña piscina para verlos, tomarle muchas fotos y alimentarlos. Justo en el sitio hay un pequeño local donde venden comidas especial para ellos. Las madres llevan a sus pequeños a verlos nadar y les compran un pequeño sobre por el costo de 1$. Los niños por supuesto, se divierten un mundo dándoles de comer. Es increíble, se vuelven como locos cuando les avientan comida, se aglomeran unos sobre otros. Yo aproveché estos momentos para sacarle algunas fotos.
The Sambil Mall is very big and beautiful, but its main attraction is the Koi fish. People come to the small pool to see them, take lots of pictures and feed them. Right on the site there is a small shop where they sell special food for them. Mothers take their little ones to watch them swim and buy them a small sachet for the cost of 1$. The kids, of course, have a blast feeding them. It's amazing, they go crazy when they are thrown food, they crowd on top of each other. I took advantage of these moments to take some pictures of them.
Uno de los señores que se encontraba en el sitio miraba con asombro el tamaño de los peces y me hizo la acotación de poderlos comer. La verdad es que estos peces cuando son criados en los estanques tienen una función más bien ornamental y no se recomiendan en lo absoluto para el consumo humano. No obstante, si se pueden comer y pueden prepararse como cualquier pescado, solo que requieren de mayor tiempo de cocción porque su carne es mucho más dura. Se podían apreciar peces de muchos colores, algunos muy brillantes, son impresionantes por sus tamaños variados, estos peces pueden llegar a medir entre 50 y 90 cm. Se veían bastante robustos, algunos pueden pesar unos 9 kilos, mientras que otros pueden alcanzar los 40 kilos.
One of the gentlemen who was at the site looked with astonishment at the size of the fish and told me that I could eat them. The truth is that these fish when raised in ponds have a rather ornamental function and are not recommended at all for human consumption. However, they can be eaten and can be prepared like any other fish, only that they require more cooking time because their meat is much harder. Fish of many colors could be seen, some of them very bright, they are impressive for their varied sizes, these fish can measure between 50 and 90 cm. They looked quite robust, some can weigh about 9 kilos, while others can reach 40 kilos.
Me encantó pasar tiempo en esta pequeña piscina o estanque como le digo yo, fueron un par de horas tal vez. Yo me acerqué lo más que pude para lograr un primer plano de algunos peces y verlos nadar. Algunos se acercaban tanto y hasta sobresalían un poco del agua, se veían realmente hermosos.
I loved spending time in this little pool or pond as I call it, it was a couple of hours maybe. I got as close as I could to get a close up of some of the fish and watch them swim. Some of them were so close and even sticking out of the water a little bit, they looked really beautiful.
El agua se veía muy oscura, quizás el tono de las paredes del pequeño estanque generaban ese efecto junto al reflejo de las líneas del techo y la vegetación, sin lugar a dudas, una mágica impresión.
The water looked very dark, perhaps the tone of the walls of the small pond generated that effect together with the reflection of the roof lines and the vegetation, without a doubt, a magical impression.

Aunque el objetivo principal de criar estos peces originarios de Asia tenía como destino el consumo humano, esto cambió en el siglo XIX, que se dio la idea de criarlos como mascotas. Son un ícono en China y Japón, y que gracias a que se han extendido en varios continentes, tenemos la dicha de poder contemplarlos en cualquier parte del mundo. Los peces koi son poseedores de un gran significado para la vida, como la prosperidad, la amistad, el amor y la buena suerte.
Although the main purpose of raising these fish, originally from Asia, was for human consumption, this changed in the 19th century, when the idea of raising them as pets was born. They are iconic in China and Japan, and thanks to the fact that they have spread to several continents, we are fortunate to be able to see them anywhere in the world. Koi fish have a great meaning for life, such as prosperity, friendship, love and good luck.
