Another spot that I visited during the northern France trip was the Saint-Pol Roux Manor - pretty rocked and worn down Villa Ruin. It was perfectly located not too far from one of the featured bunkers from my previous posts. So I managed to get to light paint this location during the same night as the bunkers. It was a loooong night and the moon was also rising. Adding another yet constantly changing light source to the scene and this way my composition would change with it.
Ein weiterer cooler Spot, den ich während meiner Reise durch Nordfrankreich besuchte, war das Saint-Pol Roux Herrenhaus – eine ziemlich runter gerockte Villa-Ruine. Perfekt gelegen, nicht allzu weit entfernt von dem einen Bunker, die ich schon eingeleuchtet hatte. So konnte ich diesen Spot in derselben Nacht noch wie die Bunker lightpainten. Es war eine laaaange Nacht und der Mond ging auch noch auf. Dieser brachte eine weitere, ständig wechselnde Lichtquelle ins Spiel, die meine Komposition jedes Mal veränderte.

Natürlich war ich tagsüber dort, um zu sehen, was ich nachts alleine machen könnte. Irgendwelche Stolperfallen?
Saint-Pol Roux Manor @ Night
The Saint-Pol Roux Manor, is a pretty cool location sitting close to the sea near Camaret-sur-Mer in Brittany, France. It is a striking villa ruin with a fascinating history. Once the residence of French symbolist poet Saint-Pol Roux, the manor sits perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, offering breathtaking views.
Built in the late 19th century, the villa became a cultural hub for artists and writers of the time. Little late for that one here.
However, during World War II, the manor was ransacked by German soldiers. Roux’s daughter was assaulted, and the poet himself died shortly after in exile.
The ruin itself is an open-air shell of what was once an ornate villa. Its decaying walls, open windows, and skeletal remains of what once was a grand building create a unique canvas for photographers, especially for night photography and light painting of course. I was sooo excited about this spot. The proximity to old World War II bunkers made the decision easy to go here.
Das Saint-Pol Roux Herrenhaus ist eine richtig coole Location, direkt am Meer, in der Nähe von Camaret-sur-Mer in der Bretagne, Frankreich. Es ist eine beeindruckende Villenruine mit einer faszinierenden Geschichte. Einst das Zuhause des französischen symbolistischen Dichters Saint-Pol Roux, thront es auf einer Klippe mit Blick auf den Atlantik – die Aussicht ist atemberaubend.
Die Villa wurde Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts gebaut und war damals ein kultureller Treffpunkt für Künstler und Schriftsteller. Bisschen spät dran hier. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde das Anwesen von deutschen Soldaten geplündert. Roux‘ Tochter wurde dabei angegriffen, und der Dichter selbst starb kurz darauf im Exil.
Die Ruine ist heute ein offenes Gerippe. Nicht viel übrig vonwegen; prunkvolle Villa. Die verfallenen Mauern, offenen Fenster und skelettartigen Überreste bieten ne sehr coole Location für Fotografen – vor allem für Nachtfotografie und Lightpainting, natürlich. Gleich um die Ecke von den alten Bunkern aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg machte die Entscheidung, hierherzukommen, total einfach.
New Light
As the moon was rising I was playing with different colors and tested what camera settings are working here and what reflects best from the remaining walls and structures. Also composition and vantage point, therefore.
Der Mond geht auf und ich teste mal was es so geht mit verschiedenen Farben und Kameraeinstellungen wie ISO und Belichtungszeiten. Die Komposition war doch etwas komplexer als ich dachte. Wohin mit dem Stativ?
Colors ON!
The red really made it pop. I was hoping the orange would do it for me. But not tonight.
Dieses Mal war es das Rot was für mich am coolsten war. Eigentlich dachte ich noch Weiß/Orange.
Camera Rotation
Maybe not tonight? For some reason my rig was really off and I did not get my camera rotation rig to line up as easy as I wanted. Anyhow I did not have much püastience so F... it! This time scrambled Lines it is.
Vielleicht doch nicht heute Nacht? Irgendwie war mein Rig total daneben, ich habs nicht geschafft dat Kamerarotationsdingsta richtig auszurichten, wie ich wollte. Naja, ich hatte auch nicht viel Geduld, also scheiß drauf! Diesmal gibt's eben verwirrte Linien.
At least I had to try some color combos.
Wenigstens eine Farbcombo musste ich ausprobieren.
Moon rotation?
After lighting the ruin I simply spun my rig free hand to give it a bit of a light trail made by the moonlight. I do like that the trail is not perfect and shows my "not-so-steady hand" shaking up the rotational trail of the moon.
Then change some colors here.
Nachdem ich die Ruine eingeleuchtet hatte, habe ich dann einfach mal mein Rig freihand gedreht, um einen leichten Light trail durch das Mondlicht zu erzeugen. Fand cool, dass der Streifen nicht zu perfekt ist und meine „nicht ganz ruhige Hand“ den Rotationspfad des Mondes etwas verwackelt hat.
More than one spot
Being here at this cool spot all alone is only half the fun. A model or any help would have opened up some more options for the light painting. On the other hand, this Villa-ruin is so diverse in its features and offers so many cool vantage points. Here are some other views that I wanted to capture at least shortly. Still absolutely worth it.
An so einem coolen Spot ganz allein zu sein, macht nur halb so viel Spaß. Ein Model oder irgendeine Hilfe hätte definitiv mehr Möglichkeiten für das Lightpainting eröffnet. Andererseits ist die Ruine so vielfältig und voller interessanter Details. Hier sind ein paar andere Ansichten, die ich zumindest kurz festhalten wollte. Es hat sich auf jeden Fall absolut gelohnt.
Just going to the other side makes a huge difference. Even the inside court offers some interesting compositions.
