Photographing some designer bowls on my Office Desk
Ok here are some exciting colors and shapes that's for sure. Normally I don't get to start light painting until it's dark. This time I just wanted to test quickly something I was meant to do for sooo long. I just set up the camera on my office desk and set the camera to F22 in the hope I will have a few seconds to Light Paint in the process.
Guess what it worked.
The featured Shot is the second attempt straight from the camera taken in the middle of the day at 4 pm in the afternoon. The trick to making it look more abstract and interesting here is a focus pull. More on that later.
Ok, hier sind mal paar aufregende Farben und Formen. Normalerweise fange ich mit dem Light Painting erst, wenn es dunkel ist. Diesmal wollte ich eigentlich nur schnell etwas testen, was ich schon sooo lange machen wollte. Einfach schnell die Kamera am Schreibtisch aufgestellt und die Linse auf F22 eingestellt. Natürlich in der Hoffnung, dass ich paar Sekunden für Light Paint habe. Ratet mal, was es funktioniert hat. Die Bild hier ist der zweite Versuch direkt aus der Kamera, der mitten am Tag um 16 Uhr nachmittags aufgenommen. Um es abstrakter und interessanter aussehen zu lassen, habe ich während der Aufnahme den Fokus geändert. Dazu später mehr.
Right after the first shot I was fixed on my new subject and got some flashlights out. Looking back to all the lockdown time, because of covid19 I should have done this months ago. Well, now I got it. The first shot is seen a few photos down below.
Gleich nach der ersten Aufnahme war ich angefixet und holte ein meine Taschenlampen raus. Wenn ich jetzt auf den Lockdown zurückblicke, hätte ich das schon vor Monaten tun sollen. Die aller erste Aufnahme ist ein paar Fotos weiter unten zu sehen.

What were the settings?
What you see is a featured Light Painting is a single 5.7 second long-exposure time photograph. The camera was always set to ISO 100 and the Sigma 105mm Macro Lens fixed to an apperature of F22.

The Trick
During the exposure, I moved the focus from 40cm to 70cm almost continuously. While doing so I set the flashlights in different positions to get the effect you see here.
Während der Aufnahme bewegte ich den Fokus fast kontinuierlich von 40 cm auf 70 cm. Dabei stelle ich die Taschenlampen in verschiedene Positionen, um den Effekt zu erzielen, den Sie hier sehen.
The Setup
Here you can see my ultra-sophisticated studio situation. This is almost hilarious. In most cases, I would start setting up in the studio with black background before attempting to take any shot in the middle of the day. Well, It worked. Huge Smile on my face!
Hier seht ihr meine hochentwickelte Studiosituation. Das ist fast ein bisschen lustig. In den meisten Fällen würde ich mit dem Aufbau im Studio mit schwarzem Hintergrund beginnen, bevor ich versuche, mitten am Tag eine Aufnahme zu machen. Nun, es hat funktioniert. Fettes Lächeln auf meinem Gesicht!
Experimenting - Getting familiar with the subject
I knew right away that I wanted two things: Abstract shapes and forms as well as different focus points. So I moved the lights while moving the focus points to different areas of the structure. But I also had to understand how the structure behaves with the colors. That's what you see in the shots above and below.
Mir war sofort klar, was ich wollte: Abstrakte Formen und unterschiedliche Focusbereiche. Also bewegte ich die Lichter, während ich die Fokus auf entlang der Struktur verschob. Wichtig war zu verstehen, wie sich die Struktur mit den Farben verhält. Das seht Ihr hier in den Aufnahmen oben und unten.

The company seems to be based in Berlin and likes to be associated to create their interior design objects inspired by the mathematics of nature. Funny enough one of the founder's name is also Gunnar. So I kind of must like him.
FUNDAMENTAL.BERLIN was founded by Gunnar Rönsch and Stephen K. Molloy. I loved it when I saw it and had to get two of these bowls. Not sure what I was going to get I did hope for some cool Light Paintings. Today was the first time I had a chance to play with it.

FUNDAMENTAL.BERLIN wurde von Gunnar Rönsch und Stephen K. Molloy gegründet. Ich fand diese Schalen sofort richtig cool und musste zwei dieser Schalen sofort bestellen. Ich war mir nicht sicher, was ich da bekommen würde, aber ein paar coole Light Paintings sollte es schon geben. Heute hatte ich dann endlich damit geklappt.

Sidebar: At first I did order these and was disappointed with the packaging. The Bowls were clued to the paper and it was impossible to get it off without deforming the bowls. I must admit that my reaction was biased by previous regular service disappointments. For others not to run into the same problem I commented on Instagram asking to change the process and they reached out to me and replaced them without asking many questions at all. Mega respect for improving on the process and well I could have sent the complaint to them directly. The team apparently change the process and yes customer satisfaction. The second time around the problem with the clue did not exist. Kudos!
Sidebar: Als ich die bekommen habe war zunächst von der Verpackung sehr enttäuscht. Die Schalen waren auf das Papier geklebt und es war unmöglich, die Schalen abzulösen, ohne diese zu verformen. Ich muss zugeben, dass meine Reaktion durch frühere Enttäuschungen beeinflusst war. Damit andere nicht auf das gleiche Problem stoßen, habe ich auf Instagram einen Kommentar abgegeben, damit sich der Prozess für andere in der Zukunft ändert. Relativ schnell wurde ich kontaktiert und die Schalen wurden anstandslos ersetzt. Mega Respekt, hätte ich nicht erwartet. Das Team änderte anscheinend den Prozess sofort und ja auch meine Kundenzufriedenheit. Beim zweiten Mal wart alles cool. Hut ab!
This was the very first shot on my desk that got me all excited. Not exactly a Light Painting but some pretty cool shapes and colors.
Das war die erste Aufnahme direkt auf meinem Schreibtisch. Klar das ich sofort angefixt war. Nicht gerade eine Light Painting, aber coole Formen und Farben.
