Italy or Brasil | 23.4.23 [Eng-Ita]

This is the fourth post about my recent journey in Cilento. If you missed out the previous episodes, here you can find the first, second, and third. Today I am going to tell you about the excursion we did on the third day of holiday: we went to Maratea, located in Basilicata, on the border with Campania.

Maratea is a small village on the sea; it is very lovely to visit but even better on its hiking paths which allow you to walk on the coast and enjoy the outstanding view towards Campania, north, and Calabria, south.

Before beginning our hike, we took a quick tour of the village, which is really nice and full of old boutiques and traditional shops. Most of them, though, are meant to sell local products to the tourists; indeed, the town has increasingly become popular among the local Italian tourists and also foreigners, thanks to its famous landmark, which I will talk more about in a bit.

The main hiking path of Maratea starts off from the upper part of the village, and leads you to the peak of Mount San Biagio, where the famous landmark is located. That is the Statue of the Cristo Redentore of Maratea, which is a 21-meter marble statue sculped in 1965. It is the third taller statue of Jesus in Europe and the fifth worldwide. It was wanted by Italian Count Rivetti who replicated the idea of the statue of Christ in Rio, after his journey there.

The statue is the symbol of Maratea and a real landmark on the coast of Basilicata; it is visible from very far away and it is now a touristic attraction for which Maratea became very popular lately.

The statue is very impressive, and many tourists go there as a pilgrimage, and leave symbols of devotion, and prayers written on pieces of paper.

I loved the hiking path to the statue, as it is very spectacular because it offers a wide view over the coast and is not super tough. There are actually multiple paths, some are harder and some other are more touristic and full of viewpoints. You can decide to walk a ring, as we did, starting off with the panoramic walk along the coast, and then, on the way back, you can take the path which crosses into the woods, and it is more direct towards the village.

Of course, at some point Riccardo really needed to take my camera so you'll see a bunch of pictures of me, some of them are meant to be silly ahah I liked it that way though, I tend to be very anxious and stressed out in my life most of the time, but in good company, I feel like I can let myself go, and be more relaxed and spontaneously act like a kid. Do you ever feel this way with someone?

When you hike towards the statue, at some point on your way you will see the fantastic ruins of the ancient city which was abandoned due to the frequent earthquakes typical of that geographic area. The ruins provide an extraordinary sense of spectacularism to the whole landscape, which is by itself already oustanding.

On the sunny days where is a lot of visibility, from Maratea it is possible to see everything! North you'll see Campania, south you'll see Calabria! And all that just staying in another region, which is Basilicata. I love Italy because it is so small but at the same time so rich of natural beauties and history.

A nice view is also available from down the path looking at the statue, as you're walking by. You will see, indeed, the ruins all along the path over the coast and the statue of Christ looks almost like a natural continuation of the ruins of the ancient town.

After a nice break at the Statue, just take your time to enjoy the wonderful view of the gulf of Maratea and Sapri: you'll see the bluest sea ever, especially if you are lucky and the it is sunny and clear. We spent a lot of time relaxing at the view point by the statue, because the view really was amazing, and you don't even realize how time flies when you're there! After the long break, we started again our walk, hiking back down towards the village, but this time, as mentioned before, we wanted to take the path across the woods. On our way, we came across a cute medieval church; unfortunately it was closed, but I appreciated it so much because it is located literally in the middle of the woods! You also want to see that if you decided to go to Maratea, as it really strikes your sight while you are hiking down the path.

Questo è il quarto post sul mio recente viaggio nel Cilento. Oggi vi racconto l'escursione che abbiamo fatto il terzo giorno di vacanza: siamo stati a Maratea, situata in Basilicata, al confine con la Campania.

Maratea è un piccolo borgo sul mare; è molto bello da visitare ma ancora meglio sui suoi sentieri escursionistici che permettono di camminare sulla costa e godere della vista eccezionale verso la Campania, a nord, e la Calabria, a sud.

Prima di iniziare la nostra escursione, abbiamo fatto un rapido giro del paese, che è davvero carino e pieno di vecchie boutique e negozi tradizionali. La maggior parte di queste, però, ha lo scopo di vendere prodotti locali ai turisti; infatti, la città è diventata sempre più popolare tra i turisti locali italiani e anche stranieri, grazie al suo famoso punto di riferimento, di cui parlerò meglio tra poco.

Il principale sentiero escursionistico di Maratea parte dalla parte alta del paese e conduce alla cima del Monte San Biagio, dove si trova il famoso punto di riferimento. Questa è la Statua del Cristo Redentore di Maratea, che è una statua in marmo di 21 metri scolpita nel 1965. È la terza statua di Gesù più alta in Europa e la quinta al mondo. Fu voluta dal conte italiano Rivetti che replicò l'idea della statua del Cristo a Rio, dopo il suo viaggio lì.

La statua è il simbolo di Maratea e un vero e proprio punto di riferimento sulla costa della Basilicata; è visibile da molto lontano ed è oggi un'attrazione turistica per la quale Maratea è diventata molto popolare ultimamente.

La statua è molto imponente e molti turisti vi si recano in pellegrinaggio e lasciano simboli di devozione e preghiere scritte su pezzi di carta.

Ho adorato il sentiero che porta alla statua, perché è molto spettacolare in quanto offre un'ampia vista sulla costa e non è molto difficile. In realtà ci sono più percorsi, alcuni più difficili e altri più turistici e ricchi di punti panoramici. Si può decidere di percorrere un anello, come abbiamo fatto noi, partendo dalla passeggiata panoramica lungo la costa, e poi, al ritorno, si può prendere il sentiero che si inoltra nel bosco, ed è più diretto verso il paese.

Certo, a un certo punto Riccardo aveva davvero bisogno di prendere la mia macchina fotografica per questo ci sono anche un sacco di foto di me, alcune sono pensate per essere stupide ahah però mi piace così; tendo ad essere molto ansiosa stressata nella mia vita per la maggior parte del tempo, ma in buona compagnia, mi sento come se potessi lasciarmi andare, essere più rilassata e comportarmi spontaneamente come i bambini. Ti sei mai sentito così con qualcuno?

Quando cammini verso la statua, ad un certo punto del tuo percorso vedrai le fantastiche rovine dell'antica città che fu abbandonata a causa dei frequenti terremoti tipici di quell'area geografica. Le rovine forniscono uno straordinario senso di spettacolarità all'intero paesaggio, che è già di per sé eccezionale.

Nelle giornate di sole dove c'è molta visibilità, da Maratea è possibile vedere di tutto! A nord vedrai la Campania, a sud vedrai la Calabria! E tutto questo rimanendo in un'altra regione, che è la Basilicata. Amo l'Italia perché è così piccola ma allo stesso tempo così ricca di bellezze naturali e di storia.

Una bella vista è disponibile anche dal fondo del sentiero guardando la statua, mentre cammini. Vedrai, infatti, le rovine lungo tutto il percorso sulla costa e la statua del Cristo sembra quasi una naturale continuazione delle rovine dell'antica città.

Dopo una bella pausa alla Statua, prenditi il tuo tempo per goderti la meravigliosa vista del golfo di Maratea e Sapri: vedrai il mare più blu di sempre, soprattutto se sei fortunato e il tempo è soleggiato e pulito. Abbiamo trascorso molto tempo rilassandoci al belvedere vicino alla statua, perché la vista era davvero incredibile e non ti rendi nemmeno conto di come vola il tempo quando sei lì! Dopo la lunga pausa, abbiamo ripreso la nostra passeggiata, ridiscendendo verso il paese, ma questa volta, come detto prima, abbiamo voluto riprendere il sentiero che attraversa i boschi. Sulla nostra strada, ci siamo imbattuti in una graziosa chiesa medievale; purtroppo era chiusa, ma l'ho apprezzata tanto perché si trova letteralmente in mezzo al bosco! Dovete andare a vederla se decidete di andare a Maratea, perché colpisce davvero la vista mentre si percorre il sentiero.
