Driving around listening to the radio the other day, Jon Batiste's Cry came on and it immediately brought to mind this first photo. Louisville Urban League CEO Sadiqa Reynolds was speaking to the crowd gathered in Injustice Square Park immediately prior the Kentucky Attorney General's announcement that there would be no charges relating to Breonna Taylor's death (one officer caught wanton endangerment charges for wildly firing into a neighboring apartment). As she spoke, reflecting on what all had happened and what we'd managed to accomplish so far she became emotional and I snapped this shot.
The video above is Jon Batiste's Tiny Desk performance and it starts with the previously mentioned Cry.
I'm going to be laid up recuperating for the next little bit so I thought I'd put the time to good use and enter some photo contests. Since I'm fond of some of y'all I thought I'd share a couple of those.
LensCulture Critic's Choice 2021 Link
This one is a little different from the usual contest in that each jurist (there's ~20) picks three photographers that they really like rather than being selected/voted on by the whole jury.
You can enter a single photo for free or its $35 USD to submit five single images (judged individually) or $45 to submit up to 10 images to be judged as a series.
The deadline for this one is next Wednesday so if you're going to enter you'd better do it soon.
Sony World Photography Awards 2022 Link
This is another annual competition that is also free to enter, with separate Student, Youth, Open, and Professional categories. The deadlines and number of images you can enter vary depending on category but there's a bit more time for all of them than with the first contest.
This last photo is from about six hours after the first photo in the post, when they'd flashbanged us out of the park and we were playing hide and seek with LMPD. A few blocks later a couple cops got shot, the FBI showed up and it got a bit interesting. It was like something out of Grand Theft Auto but a lot less fun.
Anyways, I'd better get to actually entering these contests, let me know if you decide to enter one!
