The Historical Classroom - Light Painting

Last Sunday I reported on my visit to the Historical Museum in Steinhagen together with @lichtkunstfoto, @marlasinger, @stepko, @gunnarheilmann and Hans Roufflair and Geane. A pharmacy, a corner shop and a classroom are on display on the first floor.

Here is the first part of the story...

Am letzten Sonntag berichtete ich über meinen Besuch im Historischen Museum in Steinhagen zusammen mit @lichtkunstfoto, @marlasinger, @stepko, @gunnarheilmann und Hans Roufflair und Geane. Dort wird im ersten Obergeschoss eine Apotheke, ein Tante Emma Laden und ein Klassenraum ausgestellt.

Hier geht es zum ersten Teil der Story...

The Story

The classroom was lively during art class. Professor Lumi gave a lecture about light painting. Unfortunately, his students did not shine with attention. The professor initiated educational measures. As punishment, Marla has to stand in the corner for the next 10 minutes. Today this type of punishment would be unthinkable in schools, but back then such humiliating punishments were common.

Im Klassenraum ging es während des Kunstunterrichtes lebhaft zu. Professor Lumi hielt einen Vortrag über das Lightpainting. Leider glänzten seine Schüler nicht durch Aufmerksamkeit. Der Professor leitete Erziehungsmaßnahmen ein. Marla soll zur Strafe für die nächsten 10 Minuten in der Ecke Stehen. Heute wäre die Art der Maßregelung in den Schulen undenkbar, damals waren solch erniedrigenden Strafen jedoch gebräuchlich.

The Making Of

Silke, Hans, Stefan and Gunnar were kindly my models for this light painting. I illuminated the room with an EMISAR D18. I wrote on the board with a LIGHTPAINTER RYU’S LIGHTWORKS flashlight with an attached aperture.

Für dieses Lightpainting standen mir dankenswerterweise Silke, Hans, Stefan, und Gunnar Modell. Den Raum belichtete ich mit einer EMISAR D18. An die Tafel Schrieb ich mit einer LIGHTPAINTER RYU’S LIGHTWORKS -Taschenlampe mit einer aufgesetzten Blende.

I had previously practiced light painting on the blackboard without an audience. This worked pretty well after 2-3 attempts.

Das Lightpainting an der Tafel hatte ich zuvor ohne Publikum trainiert. Das klappte nach 2-3 Versuchen schon ziemlich gut.

Above I show the historical classroom. The entire floor was darkened for the light painting. Below I show more photos from the museum. The corner shop and the photos of the pharmacy can be seen there.

Oben zeige ich den historischen Klassenraum. Für das Lightpainting wurde die gesamte Etage abgedunkelt. Unten zeige ich noch weitere Aufnahmen aus dem Museum. Dort sind der Tante Emma Laden und die Aufnahmen von der Apotheke zu sehen.

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
