Light Painting Under The Bridge

On 18 November 2019, the BAB 33 (Federal Motorway 33) was finally completed. This relieved the traffic on the B68 through Halle (Westphalia) and Steinhagen considerably.

Old maps from 1937 already show plans for an motorway between Osnabrück and Bielefeld with a continuation to today's A44 (Dortmund-Kassel). The motorway was then planned in the 1960s. 59 years later it was already completed. A masterstroke by German authorities! Well, actually, this is not really about the construction, but about one of the bridges, about 2 kilometres from our house. I had tried a light painting there some time ago, but had not yet fully realised my idea. Last night I went there again with my wife Geane to get the final picture on the camera chip. In the meantime, new ideas have already developed. I think I will go to this place more often.

Am 18. November 2019 wurde die BAB 33 (Bundesautobahn 33) endlich fertig gestellt. Diese entlastete den Verkehr auf der B68 durch Halle (Westfalen) und Steinhagen erheblich.

Auf alten Karten aus dem Jahr 1937 sind bereits Planungen einer Schnellstraße zwischen Osnabrück und Bielefeld mit Weiterführung zur heutigen A 44 (Dortmund–Kassel) zu erkennen. Geplant wurde die Autobahn dann in den 1960er Jahren. 59 Jahre später ist sie dann schon fertig gestellt worden. Eine Meisterleistung deutscher Behörden! Naja, eigentlich geht es ja hier nicht wirklich um den Bau, sondern um eine der Brücken, ungefähr 2 Kilometer von unserem Haus entfernt. Dort hatte ich vor einiger Zeit schon ein Lightpainting versucht, aber meine Idee noch nicht vollständig umgesetzt. In der letzten Nacht fuhr ich dann mit meiner Frau Geane nochmal dort hin, um das finale Bild auf den Kamerachip zu bekommen. In der Zwischenzeit haben sich auch schon neue Ideen entwickelt. Ich denke, dass ich noch öfter an diesen Ort fahren werde.

In the cover picture you can see two camera rotations in one picture. First, the light figure was brought into the picture with the DIY rotation tool. For this, I carried out a camera rotation in 45° steps. Then I illuminated the motorway bridge three times during a 120° camera rotation. The tools used are described below.

Im Titelbild seht ihr zwei Kamerarotationen in einem Bild. Zuerst wurde die Lichtfigur mit dem DIY-Rotations-Tool ins Bild gebracht. Dafür führte ich eine Kamerarotation in 45° -Schritten durch. Danach beleuchtete ich die Autobahnbrücke drei mal während einer 120° -Kamerarotation. Die eingesetzten Tools werden unten beschrieben.

The two pictures above are test shots I took last year in September. For the first picture, the camera was rotated in 120° steps. The second picture was taken by rotating the camera in 45° steps.
In the following picture my wife Geane posed for me. Here, too, the camera was rotated in 120° steps. In the last step, not the bridge, but the model was staged from behind with fog and a kick light. Geane is holding a laser in his hand, which I made visible with the help of a smoke cartridge. The picture was also taken in September 2022.

Bei den beiden Bildern oben handelt es sich um Testaufnahmen, die ich bereits letztes Jahr im September geschossen habe. Für das erste Bild wurde die Kamera in 120° -Schritten rotiert. Das zweiten Bild entstand durch Kamerarotation in 45°-Schritten. Im folgenden Bild stand meine Frau Geane für mich Modell. Auch hier wurde die Kamera in 120°-Schritten Rotiert. Wobei im letzten Schritt nicht die Brücke, sondern das Modell mit Nebel und einem Kicklicht von hinten in Szene gesetzt wurde. In der Hand hält Geane einen Laser, den ich mit Hilfe einer Rauchpatrone sichtbar machte. Das Bild entstand auch im September 2022.

The next picture was the last of yesterday's light painting evening, which we started at 21:00 and was already over by 23:00. Again, the camera was rotated in 120° increments.
With the wind coming up, it was difficult to get the smoke into the scene. I had to position a smoke cartridge quite far away from the model and then quickly stand behind the model and try to catch the smoke with the torch.

Das nächste Bild war das letzte des gestrigen Lightpainting-Abends, den wir um 21:00 Uhr begannen und um 23:00 Uhr schon vorbei war. Auch hier wurde die Kamera in 120°-Schritten gedreht. Bei dem aufkommenden Wind war es schwierig den Rauch in die Szene zu bringen. Ich musste eine Rauchpatrone ziemlich weit weg vom Modell positionieren, um mich dann schnell hinter dem Modell zu stellen und zu versuchen, den Rauch mit der Taschenlampe zu erwischen.

The Tools

The set was kept simple. For the rotation figure, I needed my DIY rotation tool, of course. I had already described it in this blog:

Since I had forgotten the remote control for it at home, Geane drove it manually. Save electricity! An "ant lamp" (RGB CRITTER by ANTS ON A MELON, INC.) with an oval blade was attached to the rotation tool.

To illuminate the bridge and the background behind the model I used an EMISAR D18 with different colour filters.

I used a few smoke cartridges for the background. I brought the model into the picture with a DIY scanner. At this point I would like to thank @lichtkunstfoto again for the housing. I finally finished the electronics last week.

Das Set war einfach gehalten. Für die Rotationsfigur benötigte ich natürlich mein DIY-Rotations-Tool. Das hatte ich in diesem Blog schon mal beschrieben:

Da ich die Fernbedienung dafür zu Hause vergessen hatte, trieb Geane das Gerät manuell an. Strom sparen! Am Rotations-Tool war eine "Ameisenlampe" (RGB CRITTER von ANTS ON A MELON, INC.) mit ovalen Blade befestigt.

Zum Ausleuchten der Brücke und den Background hinter dem Modell benutzte ich eine EMISAR D18 mit verschiedenen Farbfiltern.

Ein paar Rauchpatronen setzte ich für den Hintergrund ein. Das Modell brachte ich mit einem DIY-Scanner ins Bild. An dieser Stelle möchte ich mich nochmal bei @lichtkunstfoto für das Gehäuse bedanken. Die Elektronik habe ich in der letzten Woche endlich fertiggestellt.

In the following, I present a few shots taken before the completion of the motorway. The finished sections of the motorway provided a stage for sporting and cultural events.

Nachfolgend präsentiere ich euch noch ein paar Aufnahmen, die vor der Fertigstellung der Autobahn aufgenommen worden. Die fertigen Autobahn-Teilstücke gaben sportlichen und kulturellen Events eine Bühne.

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
