While looking through my archive, I came across previously unpublished pictures from 2019, when I spent a few weeks in Biysk, a town of 200,000 inhabitants in southern Siberia in Russia.
Beim Durchsuchen meines Archives stieß ich auf bisher unveröffentlichte Bilder aus dem Jahr 2019. Damals verbrachte ich ein paar Wochen in Bijsk, einer 200.000 Einwohnerstadt im südlichen Sibirien in Russland.

The cover picture shows the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. A sacred building typical of this region.
The industrial city seems very empty despite its 200,000 inhabitants. There were many deserted parks and places to relax not far from my hotel. The picture below shows a beach on the Bija River. The Bija flows from Lake Teletsk in the Altai Mountains and joins the Katun west of Biysk to form the Ob.

Auf dem Titelbild zeige ich die Kathedrale der Himmelfahrt der Jungfrau Maria. Einen für diese Region typischen sakralen Bau.
Die Industriestadt wirkt trotz der 200.000 Einwohner sehr leer. Es gab unweit meines Hotels viele menschenleere Parks und Plätze, an denen man sich entspannen kann. Das Bild unten zeigt einen Strand am Fluss Bija. Die Bija entfließt dem Telezker See im Altai-Gebirge und vereint sich westlich von Bijsk mit dem Katun zum Ob.

Of course, as in almost every former Soviet city, military equipment is on display here to honor the Soviet army. A disused T72, the Soviet Union's top export, of which around 20,000 were built, adorns a park here.
Natürlich wird, wie in fast jeder ehemals sowjetischen Stadt, auch hier Kriegsgerät zur Ehrung der Sowjetarmee zur Schau gestellt. Ein ausgedienter T72, der Exportschlager der Sowjetunion, von dem ca. 20000 Stück gebaut wurden ziert hier einen Park.

Not everything that looks like an abandoned place actually is one! This streetcar is still in operation and reliably transports the inhabitants of Biysk through the city.
Nicht alles was hier wie ein Lost Place aussieht ist auch einer! Diese Straßenbahn ist noch in Betrieb und befördert die Bevölkerung von Bijsk zuverlässig durch die Stadt.

As most of the attractions shown here were in the immediate vicinity of my hotel, I went out at night to capture one or two light paintings on the camera chip. I walked to the cathedral with my camera, tripod and an LEDLenser fitted with a Lightblade. There were very few vehicles on this street at night, so I was able to work undisturbed.
Da sich die meisten der hier gezeigten Attraktionen in der unmittelbaren Nähe meines Hotels befanden, zog ich Nachts los, um das eine oder andere Lightpainting auf den Kamerachip zu bannen. Mit Kamera, Stativ und einer mit einem Lightblade bestückten LEDLenser lief ich zu Kathedrale. Nachts fuhren nur noch sehr wenige Fahrzeuge auf dieser Straße, so dass man ungestört arbeiten konnte.

The Tools
As always, I present the tools used here. The pictures below show the Lightblade, which I have covered with three different color foils. This creates the effect that the color changes depending on the position of the Lightblade in relation to the camera. An effect that I still use from time to time today.
If I have now aroused your interest in light painting and my trip through Siberia, I would like to refer you to next Sunday's article. I will post the second part of this report then. So stay tuned!
Wie immer stelle ich hier die verwendeten Tools vor. Auf den Bildern unten zu sehen ist das Lightblade, welches ich mit drei verschiedenen Farbfolien beklebt habe. Das verursacht den Effekt, dass je nach Stellung des Lightblades zur Kamera die Farbe wechselt. Ein Effekt, den ich bis heute hin und wieder einsetze.
Wenn ich jetzt dein Interesse an Lightpainting und meine Reise durch Sibirien geweckt habe, möchte ich auf den Artikel am nächsten Sonntag verweisen. Dann werde den zweiten Teil dieses Berichtes posten. Also bleib dran!
What Is Light Painting?
Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.
Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
