Matching the winter weather in the northern hemisphere, I would like to post something frosty today. You probably know pictures of frozen soap bubbles. I combined this with a light painting. Very interesting results were obtained.
Passend zum Winterwetter auf der Nordhalbkugel der Erde, möchte ich heute etwas frostiges posten. Ihr kennt bestimmt Bilder von eingefrorenen Seifenblasen. Diese habe ich mit einem Lightpainting kombiniert. Dabei sind ganz interessante Ergebnissen entstanden.

The Tool
To create the bubbles I used a steel tube with a diameter of 5mm. I put this in my jacket pocket to warm it up, because otherwise my lips would have stuck to it in this cold weather. Unfortunately I didn't have anything else in the house. Plastic drinking straws have been banned by the EU and are no longer freely available in stores. Alternatively, you can make a ring with a handle out of pipe cleaners. I'll try that for the next soap bubble photos.
Um die Seifenblasen zu erzeugen habe ich ein Stahlrohr mit 5mm Durchmesser benutzt. Dieses steckte ich zwischendurch in meine Jackentasche zum wärmen, da bei dieser Kälte sonst meine Lippen daran festgeklebt wären. Leider hatte ich nichts anderes im Haus. Plastiktrinkröhrchen wurden ja durch die EU verboten und sind nicht mehr frei im Handel verfügbar. Wahlweise kann man sich aus Pfeifenreiniger einen Ring mit Griff basteln. Das werde ich bei den nächsten Seifenblasenfotos ausprobieren.

Soap Bubble Liquid Recipe
I made my own soap bubble liquid. For that I have
- 0.5L water
- 100ml washing-up liquid
- 100ml corn syrup
stirred in a vessel, not shaken 😉. Alternatively, glycol can be used in place of the corn syrup.
Ich habe mir die Seifenblasen-Flüssigkeit selbst hergestellt. Dafür habe ich
- 0,5L Wasser
- 100ml Spülmittel
- 100ml Maissirup
in einem Gefäß gerührt, nicht geschüttelt 😉. Wahlweise kann man statt des Maissirups auch Glycol verwenden.
Yellow Bubble
All pictures were taken in February 2021. We had a lot of snow. My garden was covered with a layer of snow up to 1.5 m thick.

Alle Bilder wurden im Februar 2021 aufgenommen. Wir hatten sehr viel Schnee. Mein Garten lag unter einer bis zu 1,5m dicken Schneedecke.

Alle Lightpaintings wurden mit einer Canon 6D MarkII in einer einzigen Belichtung ohne Photoshop erstellt.

Freezing temperatures are of course necessary for frozen soap bubbles! During the day we already had -5°C and sun. I prepared the set. There was still enough snow on the garden table to place a soap bubble on it. Unfortunately, even the slightest breath of wind destroys these fragile structures very quickly. To protect against the wind, I placed a styrofoam sheet next to the set. That worked quite well. It only had to get dark for the light painting.
Minusgrade sind für gefrorene Seifenblasen natürlich nötig! Am Tage hatten wir schon -5°C und Sonne. Ich bereitete das Set vor. Auf dem Gartentisch lag noch genügend Schnee, um eine Seifenblase darauf zu platzieren. Leider zerstört auch der leiseste Windhauch diese fragilen Gebilde sehr schnell. Als Schutz vor Wind platzierte ich eine Styroporplatte neben das Set. Das funktionierte ganz gut. Für das Lightpainting musste es jetzt nur noch dunkel werden.
I shined a flashlight on the bubble. A small pixel stick provided the colored background.
During the night we had -13°C. That was pretty cold. After two hours on the terrace I was a block of ice.
Mit einer Taschenlampe leuchtete ich die Seifenblase an. Ein kleiner Pixel-Stick sorgte für den farbigen Background. In der Nacht hatten wir dann -13°C. Das war schon ganz schön kalt. Nach zwei Stunden auf der Terrasse war ich ein Eisblock.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?
Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
