How To Create Fog In Photography

Today's topic is artificial fog in photography. It's less about describing how the images were created and more about the different approaches to creating fog in the image. I will leave out the fog created by light painting this time.

I have tried out a few ways of creating fog. Now I would like to share my experiences with you here. At the very end I will compare the fog machines and give a résumé.

Heute geht es um das Thema künstlicher Nebel in der Fotografie. Dabei geht es weniger um die Beschreibung wie die Bilder entstanden sind, sondern um die verschiedenen Vorgehensweisen beim Erzeugen des Nebels im Bild. Den durch Lightpainting erzeugten Nebel lasse ich diesmal aus. Einige Möglichkeiten Nebel zu erzeugen, habe ich ausprobiert. Nun möchte meine Erfahrungen hier mit euch teilen. Ganz zum Schluss werde ich die Nebelmaschinen vergleichen und ein Résumé abgeben.

A SmokeMaster Pro from Rollei was used here. A very versatile, mobile smoke machine for 200 euros. It is perfect for this application.

The fog stays in the glass for a very long time. This fog machine comes with a fan to distribute the fog in the room, a high-pressure nozzle to extend the range of the fog and some tools to create a dry ice effect (floor fog). The basic equipment without the tools is available for as little as 100 euros.

Zum Einsatz kam hier ein SmokeMaster Pro von Rollei. Eine sehr vielseitig einzusetzende, mobile Nebelmaschine für 200 Euro. Für diese Anwendung ist sie wie geschaffen. Der Nebel bleibt sehr lange im Glas Liegen. Zu dieser Nebelmaschine werden ein Ventilator zur Verteilung des Nebels im Raum, eine Hochdruckdüse zur Erweiterung der Reichweite des Nebels, sowie einige Tools zur Erzeugung eines Trockeneis-Effektes (Bodennebel) geliefert. Die Grundausstattung ohne die Tools bekommt man schon für 100 Euro.

An ultrasonic fogging machine was used here. This is the cheapest, simplest and cleanest solution for the studio. I bought it from AMAZON for 3 euros. Connected to a 5V power bank, the machine provides fog for hours. This tool is useful for very small sets. The machine atomizes water vapor.
This has the disadvantage that water can be deposited on objects. In addition, the holding time of the mist is very short. The small design allows flexible use.

Hier kam eine Ultraschall Nebel Maschine zum Einsatz. Dies ist die Billigste, einfachste und auch sauberste Lösung für das Studio. Bei AMAZON erwarb ich das Teil für 3 Euro. Angeschlossen an eine 5V Powerbank, liefert die Maschine für Stunden Nebel. Für sehr kleine Sets ist dieses Tool brauchbar. Die Maschine zerstäubt Wasserdampf. Das hat den Nachteil, dass sich Wasser auf Gegenstände niederschlagen kann. Außerdem ist die Haltedauer des Nebels sehr gering. Die kleine Bauform läßt einen flexiblen Einsatz zu.

For photo shoots where a lot of fog is needed, a classic fog machine is suitable.

Für Fotoshootings bei denen sehr viel Nebel benötigt wird, eignet sich eine klassische Nebelmaschine.

The fog machine shown above has an output of 1200 W. After 5 minutes of heating up, it emits 70m³/min of fog with a range of 4m. It costs approx. 80.00 euros. 5L of fog fluid are included. A refill of 5L of fog fluid costs approx. 12 euros.

Disadvantage: You need a power socket. These are rarely found in abandoned places or in nature.

Die oben abgebildete Nebelmaschine hat eine Leistung von 1200W. Nach 5 Minuten Aufheizzeit stößt sie 70m³/min Nebel mit einer Reichweite von 4m aus. Sie kostet ca. 80,00 Euro. 5L Nebelflüssigkeit gehörten zum Lieferumfang. Ein 5L Nebelfluid zum Nachfüllen kosten ca. 12 Euro.

Nachteil: man benötigt eine Steckdose. An Lost Places oder in der Natur sind diese eher selten zu finden.

Smoke cartridges are a mobile solution. They require no electricity, take up little space and can fog approx. 17 m³. The smoking time is 180 seconds. The cost is approx. 3 euros / piece. Unfortunately, the smoke is not odorless and certainly not beneficial to health. An application example is shown in the picture above.

Eine mobile Lösung sind Rauchpatronen. Die brauchen keinen Strom, wenig Platz und können ca. 17 m³ einnebeln. Die Rauchzeit beträgt 180 Sekunden. Die Kosten liegen bei ca. 3 Euro / Stück. Der Rauch ist leider nicht geruchsneutral und mit Sicherheit nicht gesundheitsfördernd. Ein Anwendungsbeispiel zeige ich im obigen Bild.

Fire protection also plays a major role here. It's not just that you can burn your fingers. The cartridges get really hot and can cause fires! I always take an empty tin or jar with me to hold the still-burning smoke cartridges.

Ausserdem spielt Brandschutz hier eine große Rolle. Nicht nur, dass man sich die Finger verbrennen kann. Die Patronen werden wirklich sehr heiß und können Brände verursachen! Ich nehme immer eine leere Dose oder ein leeres Glas mit, wo die noch brennenden Rauchpatronen Platz finden.

That leaves the vaporizer, also known as an e-cigarette, which was used in the picture above.

The e-cigarette fits in any pocket, is lightweight and is powered by two rechargeable batteries. In addition, the fuel for the mist (glycol) is available relatively cheaply from any pharmacy. The power can be infinitely adjusted. Handling is a little tricky. If you use too much power, the liquid can burn. Which in turn releases harmful gases.

The equipment with all accessories without batteries costs 105.00 euros.

Bleibt noch der Verdampfer oder auch als E-Zigarette bekannt, der im Bild oben eingesetzt wurde.

Die E-Zigarette passt in jede Tasche, ist leicht und wird von zwei Akkus angetrieben. Zudem ist der Treibstoff für den Nebel (Glycol) relativ günstig in jeder beliebigen Apotheke zu haben. Die Leistung kann stufenlos eingestellt werden. Die Handhabung ist etwas tricky. Wenn man zu viel Leistung abruft, kann die Flüssigkeit schon mal brennen. Was wiederum schädliche Gase freisetzt. Das Equipment mit allem Zubehör ohne Akkus schlägt mit 105,00 Euro zu Buche.

That brings us to the conclusion. The SmokeMaster Pro from Rollei is my favorite at the moment.

Positive:

The fog is almost odorless
The device can be operated remotely
There is a thread to attach the device to the tripod
Very cool tools for creating special effects are included

Negative:

The button on the fan has the same color as the housing. (poor operability)
The fog machine makes noise. Not relevant for photos, but relevant for video recordings.
At 200 euros, this is the most expensive fog machine presented here.

All other fog machines are not as flexible. I will say goodbye to the smoke cartridges, the e-cigarette and the ultrasonic fog machine. Only the large fog machine with an output of 1200W will probably be kept for one or two applications.

Da wären wir beim Fazit. Der SmokeMaster Pro von Rollei ist im Augenblick mein Favorit.

Positiv:

Der Nebel ist nahezu geruchlos
Das Gerät ist fernbedienbar
Es gibt ein Gewinde, um das gerät am Stativ zu befestigen
Es werden sehr coole Tools zur Erzeugung spezieller Effekte mitgeliefert.

Negativ:

Der Taster am Ventilator hat die gleiche Farbe wie das Gehäuse. (schlechte Bedienbarkeit)
Die Nebelmaschine macht Geräusche. Für Fotos nicht relevant, für Video-Aufnahmen schon.
Mit 200 Euro ist dies die teuerste Nebelmaschine, die hier vorgestellt wurde.

Alle anderen Nebelmaschinen sind nicht so flexibel einsetzbar. Ich werde mich von den Rauchpatronen, der E-Zigarette und der Ultraschall-Nebelmaschine verabschieden. Einzig die große Nebelmaschine mit der Leistung von 1200W werde ich wohl für die ein oder andere Anwendung vorhalten.

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
