La Capilla de la Colina

Su nombre, ya lo sé, no tiene nada que ver con su ubicación, pero siempre que pasaba en carro o autobús por la avenida Sucre, llamaba mi atención aquella pequeña iglesia de un estilo bastante similar al gótico.

Its name, I know, has nothing to do with its location, but whenever I passed by car or bus on Avenida Sucre, that small church with a style quite similar to Gothic called my attention.

La primera vez que la observé ya estaba oscureciendo, y como la capilla lucía antigua y descuidada, arropada por grandes árboles, me hizo pensar que era un pequeño castillo. Que quizá allí vagaba el fantasma de algún "vizconde demediado" o hasta algún ser emparentado con los vampiros.

The first time I saw it, it was already getting dark, and since the chapel looked old and neglected, surrounded by large trees, it made me think it was a small castle. That perhaps the ghost of some "mid viscount" or even some being related to the vampires wandered there.

En realidad, la historia detrás del abandono de esta capilla, que fue construida en 1884, en una zona conocida como El Calvario, en Caracas, es un poco más oscura y simple que una historia de vampiros o vizcondes partidos en dos.

Actually, the story behind the abandonment of this chapel, which was built in 1884, in an area known as El Calvario, in Caracas, is a little darker and simpler than a story of vampires or viscounts torn in two.

Hace unos años pude, al fin, saciar mi curiosidad y acercarme a esta capilla que lleva el nombre de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. Las autoridades locales estaban sometiéndola a una restauración y pude tomar algunas fotos no solo desde lejos, también en su interior.

A few years ago I was finally able to satisfy my curiosity and go to this chapel that bears the name of Our Lady of Lourdes. The local authorities were undergoing a restoration and I was able to take some photos not only from afar, but also inside.

Durante la mayor parte de su existencia, esta pequeña iglesia estuvo abandonada a su suerte, en ella se escondían ladrones, amantes, estudiantes que evadían el horario de clases, gente con apuros estomacales. Algún que otro curioso se acercaba bajo el riesgo de ser asaltado o, quizá, espantado por el fantasma de un cura. Porque en toda buena historia de iglesias abandonadas debe existir un cura pecador.
No tengo claro si la historia es totalmente real:
Un hombre, atraido por los gritos o gemidos de una joven mujer, se acercó a mirar por los ventanales para descubrir al cura, junto al altar, haciendo el amor con la muchacha... o violándola, a estas alturas nunca sabremos.
El resultado, como es de esperar: el escándalo, el feroz arrepentimiento del cura, que tomó el simbreante camino de los ahorcados.
¿Y quién va a querer asistir a misa o casarse en una capilla donde se ha ahorcado un hombre con sotana?
No quería asustarlos con esta clase de historias, al fin y al cabo, por ahora, la capilla luce muy bonita.

For most of its existence, this small church was abandoned to its fate, where thieves, lovers, students who evaded class hours, people with stomach problems, hid. The occasional curious person approached under the risk of being assaulted or, perhaps, frightened by the ghost of a priest. Because in every good story of abandoned churches there must be a sinful priest.
I'm not sure if the story is totally real:
A man, attracted by the screams or moans of a young woman, came to look through the windows to discover the priest, next to the altar, making love to the girl... or raping her, at this point we will never know.
The result, as is to be expected: the scandal, the fierce repentance of the priest who took the shadowy path of the hanged.
And who is going to want to attend mass or get married in a chapel where a man in a cassock has hanged himself?
I didn't want to scare you with this kind of story, after all, for now, the chapel looks very nice.
