El Grunge fue un estilo de música que definió por completo a la llamada "Generación X" en los 90'; una de las máximas exponentes del grunge fue y todavía es "Alice In Chains", una de mis bandas favoritas que tuvo la actitud y la música para convertirse en leyenda del rock y así los considero por siempre; esta banda tuvo muchos éxitos, sencillos y álbumes, siendo justamente el EP "Jar of Flies" el cual salió a la venta un 25 de enero de 1994, un completo éxito que brindo canciones que perduraran en el tiempo.

Recuerdo que la primera vez que vi el vídeo musical del tema "Would?", del álbum "Dirt", fue suficiente para convertirme en un fan de Alice In Chains; en ese tiempo todo lo referente al Grunge estaba acaparado por bandas como "Nirvana" y "Pearl Jam", pero justamente este cuarteto liderado por el único Layne Staley, (vocalista) y Jarry Cantrell (guitarrista), el cual parecía no ser influenciado por los flashes de la fama, apareció en el momento perfecto y es que su estilo musical lo cual los hizo transitar en entre géneros del rock fue lo que justamente me abrió la puerta a escuchar otras bandas, pero enfocándome en el tema principal de esta publicación, quiero hacer referencia a mi experiencia con "Jar of Flies" segundo EP de esta banda.
I remember the first time I saw the music video for the song "Would?"from the album "Dirt" was enough to make me a fan of Alice In Chains; at that time everything about Grunge was monopolized by bands like "Nirvana" and "Pearl Jam", but precisely this quartet led by the one and only Layne Staley, (vocalist) and Jarry Cantrell (guitarist), who seemed not to be influenced by the flashes of fame, appeared at the perfect time and their musical style which made them move between rock genres was what opened the door for me to listen to other bands, but focusing on the main topic of this publication, I want to refer to my experience with "Jar of Flies" second EP of this band.
Antes de proseguir, explicaré muy brevemente que las siglas "EP" significan "Extended play", lo cual es una producción musical compuesta por hasta seis o más canciones, la cual puede tener una duración de hasta 30 minutos, justamente esa la duración de "Jar of Flies" la cual está compuesta por siete temas musicales, de los cuales hasta cuatro cuentan con la autoría de Layne, y los demás por Jerry, también teniendo colaboración con los otros integrantes de la banda. Mi encuentro con este álbum se debe como dije anteriormente al impacto que tuvo en mi persona el segundo LP de esta banda y es que la necesidad de escuchar nuevamente algo referente a ellos se convirtió en un tipo de prioridad y mi deseo fue concedido al escuchar el tema "I Stay Away", canción que era muy diferente a lo que escuche anteriormente de esta banda, más que nada en término musical al tener un riff de guitarra sencillo el cual por momentos se mantenía escondido detrás de la gran participación de los instrumentos de cuerda, pero hubo un elemento poderoso y ese fue como siempre la harmonía en las voces de Layne y Jerry lo cual brindo tranquilidad y a la vez oscuridad a una canción que relata la historia de alguien que quiere mantenerse alejado del Mundo.
Estoy convencido de que "I Stay Away" es de los temas más comerciales de la banda y fue uno que por mucho tiempo estuvo unido a mi persona, aunque también hubo un momento en que me hizo añorar a lo hecho en anterioridad y creo que eso fue debido a no prestar atención al significado de las otras canciones que confirmaban este corto, pero gran álbum y es que en esta parte de la publicación debo hacer una comparativa a la persona, el adolescente que fui al momento de escuchar por primera vez Jar of Flies, en dónde primeramente sentí decepción a ser tan pocas canciones y que no se repitiera la fórmula de temas como "Would?", creo que es por eso que la canción que fue el segundo sencillo promocional de esta producción, se mantuvo muy unido y presente hasta que tuve la oportunidad de entender al artista y su arte.

My encounter with this album is due as I said before to the impact that the second LP of this band had on me and the need to listen again to something related to them became a kind of priority and my wish was granted when listening to the song "I Stay Away", a song that was very different from what I had heard previously from this band, mostly in musical terms by having a simple guitar riff which at times was hidden behind the great participation of the stringed instruments, but there was a powerful element and that was as always the harmony in the voices of Layne and Jerry which brought tranquility and at the same time darkness to a song that tells the story of someone who wants to stay away from the World.
I am convinced that "I Stay Away" is one of the most commercial songs of the band and it was one that for a long time was attached to me, although there was also a moment when it made me long for what was done before and I think that was due to not paying attention to the meaning of the other songs that confirmed this short, but great album and in this part of the publication I must make a comparison to the person, the teenager that I was at the moment of listening for the first time to Jar of Flies, where firstly I felt disappointment to be so few songs and that the formula of songs like "Would?"I think that is why the song that was the second promotional single of this production, remained very close and present until I had the opportunity to understand the artist and his art.
Lamentablemente en el año 2002, Layne Staley dejaría este mundo, una gran perdida para su familia, amigos, fans y la música perder a una única y especial voz en el mundo del rock, una triste historia que al final vimos a un hombre sucumbir a su adicción a las drogas, pero eso no evito que usará la música para el relato de su final y en este álbum nos daba indicios de como quería vivir y de morir; aparte de la ya nombrada "I Stay Away", canciones como "Swing on This", "Rotten Apple" y la canción que es considerada como una de la triste de la historia, me refiero a "Nutshell", un clásico de la banda, la cual presenta una letra real, cruda y que lamentablemente se convirtió en un spoiler de lo que un tiempo después le sucedería a Layne.

Treinta años han pasado del momento en que salió a la venta este EP de Alice In Chains y mi perspectiva y, por supuesto, el significado de sus canciones, ahora tienen más sentido tratando de entender lo que pudo vivir tanto Staley con su estilo de vida y también la de sus amigos de la banda. Hasta el día de hoy en dónde pude escuchar nuevamente este álbum, sentí nostalgia, recordé buenos momentos, recordé el momento de tener ese álbum de pocas canciones en mis manos y de poder escuchar canciones que posiblemente en ese momento no estaba preparado para escuchar, pero el tiempo y lo sucedido con esa banda me enseñó a apreciar una más ese álbum y es por eso que en esta publicación le hago un simple homenaje como fan.
Thirty years have passed since the release of this Alice In Chains EP and my perspective and, of course, the meaning of its songs, now make more sense trying to understand what Staley could live so much with his lifestyle and also that of his friends in the band. Until today where I could listen again to this album, I felt nostalgia, I remembered good moments, I remembered the moment of having that album of few songs in my hands and being able to listen to songs that possibly at that time I was not ready to listen to, but time and what happened with that band taught me to appreciate one more that album and that is why in this publication I make a simple tribute to it as a fan.
