Aprovechando que llegó el último mes del año y que por estas tierras eso se deriva en que prácticamente los 31 días que lo conforman es escuchar gaitas en casi todos lados, decidí hablar un poco sobre este ritmo y deconstruir algunas de las canciones más icónicas que forman parte de esta tradición. Como fiel amante de la música está claro que las gaitas para mi son imprescindibles e indispensables por su ritmo tan característico pero sobretodo por la alegría que de ella se desprende.

Taking advantage of the fact that the last month of the year has arrived and that in these lands that means that practically the 31 days that make it up is to listen to bagpipes almost everywhere, I decided to talk a little about this rhythm and deconstruct some of the most iconic songs that are part of this tradition. As a faithful music lover it is clear that the bagpipes for me are essential and indispensable for its characteristic rhythm but above all for the joy that comes from it.

No vengo a hablar de la historia ni muchos menos pero para poner un poco en contexto a aquellos que no tengan ni idea de este estilo la gaita se origina en la región occidental de Venezuela, más en especifico en el estado Zulia como un canto de protesta. Este estado posee grandes reservas de petróleo pero por diversas razones que no viene al caso casi nunca ha sido beneficiado por eso y por tal motivo los músicos de aquella zona un buen día alzaron la voz y de ahí nació la gaita. Un cuento increíblemente corto pero básicamente eso fue lo que sucedió, así que sin más vamos a lo que vinimos.

I am not here to talk about the history of the gaita, but to put it in context for those who have no idea about this style, the gaita originated in the western region of Venezuela, more specifically in the state of Zulia as a protest song. This state has large oil reserves but for various reasons that are not relevant it has almost never been benefited by it and for that reason the musicians of that area one day raised their voices and from there the gaita was born. An incredibly short story but basically that's what happened, so without further ado let's get to what we came for.

- Medley #1 - Free Cover and Betulio Medina.

Uno de los grandes exponentes de la gaita sin duda es Betulio Medina, hay varios pero él está fácil en el top 3 de los más relevantes; y los muchachos de Free Cover son un grupo de músicos que de verdad su calidad traspasa pantallas y fronteras. Escojo este video por varias razones: para que vean el que probablemente sea el mejor mix de gaitas, para que se familiaricen con el sonido y para que deconstruyamos un poco todo lo que vemos acá.

One of the great exponents of the gaita is undoubtedly Betulio Medina, there are several but he is easily in the top 3 of the most relevant; and the guys from Free Cover are a group of musicians whose quality truly transcends screens and borders. I choose this video for several reasons: to show you what is probably the best mix of gaitas, to familiarize yourself with the sound and to deconstruct a little of what we see here.

La gaita se caracteriza por un par de instrumentos: el cuatro, charrasca y tambora; pero en este video vemos la adición de otros que sin duda son los elementos diferenciadores: la mandolina y la sección de vientos o metales (saxos, trompetas y trombón). Por lo general la gaita no tiene vientos pero cuando escuchamos lo increíble que se escuchan acá nos preguntamos como es posible eso y la mandolina como acompañamiento es otro nivel también.

The gaita is characterized by a couple of instruments: the cuatro, charrasca and tambora; but in this video we see the addition of others that undoubtedly are the differentiating elements: the mandolin and the brass section (saxophones, trumpets and trombone). Usually the gaita does not have winds but when we hear how incredible they sound here we wonder how that is possible and the mandolin as accompaniment is another level as well.

Las canciones que escuchan son quizás las más sonadas y los arreglos que en ellas hay son de mucha calidad; el bajo y el sonido de la tambora son espectaculares. Pero repito, la sección de metales es lo que hace que este medley sea otra cosa y merezca ser escuchado y bailado por todo el mundo. Si bien es verdad que la voz de Don Betulio no es la misma de hace un par de años todavía es capaz de llegar a ciertos tonos altos y eso amigos, es otra de las grandes firmas.

The songs you hear are perhaps the most played and the arrangements in them are of great quality; the bass and the sound of the drums are spectacular. But I repeat, the brass section is what makes this medley something else and deserves to be listened to and danced to by everyone. While it is true that Don Betulio's voice is not the same as it was a couple of years ago, he is still capable of reaching certain high tones and that, my friends, is another of the great signatures.

- Medley #2 - Free Cover and Neguito Borjas.

Aterrizamos con el segundo medley y lo hacemos con otro de los grandes exponentes: Neguito Borjas, también dentro del top 3. Este video es muy diferente al anterior como se pudieron dar cuenta y es obviamente porque no hay metales y es que acá vemos y escuchamos un sonido de la gaita mucho más "original" y de la cepa que la anterior. Es un sonido que está compuesto casi enteramente por percusión, tambora, batería, timbal, maracas y charrasca que es lo que vendrían siendo la base principal de esta música.

We land with the second medley and we do it with another of the great exponents: Neguito Borjas, also in the top 3. This video is very different from the previous one as you may have noticed and it is obviously because there is no brass and here we see and hear a much more "original" and "original" gaita sound than the previous one. It is a sound that is composed almost entirely of percussion, tambora, drums, timbal, maracas and charrasca which is what would be the main base of this music.

Pero como siempre también está ese elemento diferenciador y en este caso son los coros. Los coros forman una parte importante de la gaita ya que por lo general son grupos de por lo menos 15 músicos de los cuales minimo 5 son coros o acompañantes por lo que si, es parte de la sangre de las gaitas. En este Free Cover vemos como esas voces suben y se vuelven agudas haciendo que el sonido sea mucho más particular (por ejemplo a partir del minuto 5).

But as always there is also that differentiating element and in this case it is the choirs. The choirs are an important part of the bagpipes as they are usually groups of at least 15 musicians of which at least 5 are choirs or accompanists so yes, it is part of the blood of the bagpipes. In this Free Cover we see how these voices rise and become high-pitched making the sound much more particular (for example from minute 5).

Charrasca y tamboras es lo que predomina y resalta aquí y es algo que me parece increíble porque si sonaran esos dos nada más les aseguro que sabríamos que es gaita lo que están tocando; así de única es la gaita venezolana, tiene un sonido muy peculiar.

Charrasca and tamboras is what predominates and stands out here and it is something that seems incredible to me because if those two only sounded, I assure you that we would know that what they are playing is gaita; that is how unique the Venezuelan gaita is, it has a very peculiar sound.

- Medley #3 - Free Cover and Ricardo Cepeda.

Ricardo Cepeda conforma el top 3 de cantantes gaiteros y es con el único que voy a decir que su voz debería de ser proclamada patrimonio cultural porque para los fanáticos es de los pilares este genero. En este tercer video vemos una gaita mucho más "sentida", calmada y tranquila que las anteriores y es que esa es otra de las grandes características de este estilo.

Ricardo Cepeda makes up the top 3 of gaita singers and he is the only one with whom I will say that his voice should be proclaimed cultural heritage because for fans he is one of the pillars of this genre. In this third video we see a much more "heartfelt", calm and quiet gaita than the previous ones and that is another of the great characteristics of this style.

Al principio les hablé que la gaita le cantaba a las protestas y al descontento social pero también lo hace desde y para el amor, el cariño y la amistad y este medley es muestra de ello. Son canciones que no necesitan esa explosividad del primer video porque son más para escucharlas que para bailarlas por lo que las voces y los pequeños detalles se van a notar mucho más.

At the beginning I told you that the gaita sings to protests and social discontent, but it also sings from and for love, affection and friendship, and this medley is proof of that. These are songs that don't need the explosiveness of the first video because they are more for listening than for dancing, so the voices and the little details will be much more noticeable.

Que detalles? - pues que el cuatro, otro de los grandes elementos dentro de la gaita, y el mismo teclado se hacen notar con mucha más fuerza. Creo que a nivel de emociones este pueda que sea el mejor de los tres y es que estoy seguro que ese era el objetivo real, llegarle a las personas de otra manera a través de un ritmo tan alegre.

What details? - Well, the cuatro, another of the great elements of the gaita, and the keyboard itself are much stronger. I think that in terms of emotions this may be the best of the three, and I am sure that this was the real objective, to reach people in a different way through such a happy rhythm.

Como vieron la gaita de Venezuela es un ritmo que da para todo además de que es muy pegajoso y es fácil encariñarse con él. Conozco gente que no le gusta la gaita y lógicamente respeto sus opiniones pero en mi no cabe esa concepción de no escuchar esta música en esta época del año, la navideña. Es un sonido tan singular y extraordinario que provoca ser tocado por cualquier musico, toques el instrumento que toques, desde cuerdas, metales hasta la tan importante percusión.

As you saw the gaita of Venezuela is a rhythm that can be used for everything, besides it is very catchy and it is easy to get attached to it. I know people who do not like the gaita and of course I respect their opinions, but in my mind there is no room for not listening to this music at this time of the year, the Christmas season. It is such a unique and extraordinary sound that it can be played by any musician, no matter what instrument you play, from strings to brass to the all-important percussion.
