Oggi voglio parlare con voi di una grande opera musicale: The Wall - Pink Floyd (1979).

Bene o male tutti conosciamo questo disco storico dei #PinkFloyd , dopotutto chi non ha mai ascoltato uno dei grandi brani come "Another brick in the wall (part 2)", "Mother", "Comfortably numb" etc.. !?? Ma in questo post, oltre alle inestimabili canzoni voglio cercare di esporre tutte le caratteristiche ed i particolari che hanno reso #TheWall un'opera davvero unica nel suo genere.
L’album sin dal principio viene pensato con una struttura tale da poter essere presentato come un disco musicale, un film ed uno spettacolo dal vivo, e per tale caratteristica esso viene considerato un’Opera Rock (altri esempi di Opere Rock sono stati Tommy e Quadrophenia de The Who). L’intero album è stato scritto dal cantante Roger Waters e rivela in sè molte note autobiografiche.
Prima di iniziare, vorrei sottolineare che l'album non ha a che fare direttamente con il muro di Berlino, sebbene Waters sia sempre stato attivo politicamente e abbia organizzato anche il concerto per la caduta del muro. Questo disco infatti nasce come una visione introspettiva e molto psicologica relativa alla condizione umana ed i muri che costruiamo attorno a noi stessi per "difenderci" ma che finiscono invece per isolarci. Tale concetto verrà poi espanso e diverrà un motto contro ogni tipo di muro o barriera.
LA TRAMA
L’opera ha come protagonista Floyd Pinkerson (Pink), una rock star dal profilo psicologico molto complesso. All’interno dei testi possiamo individuare gli eventi che hanno segnato la sua vita e le sue reazioni di fronte ad essi, potendo così capire le cause e le conseguenze che questi avvenimenti hanno apportato sulla sua personalità e sui suoi comportamenti.
Egli infatti in preda ad una crisi, durante il periodo più difficile della sua carriera, si rende conto di aver costruito nel corso di tutta la vita un enorme muro intorno a sè per potersi difendere dalle difficoltà del mondo. Così comincia a riepilogare tutti gli avvenimenti che hanno contribuito alla costruzione di questo muro, mattone per mattone: la morte del padre, le asfissianti attenzioni della madre, l'isolamento e la distanza creata dalla sua condizione lavorativa, il tradimento e la perdita dell'amore, l'assuefazione alle droghe e ad una vita promiscua ricca di "cose" e sempre più povera di essenza.
Riassunti tutti i punti dolorosi ed irrisolti della sua vita, Pink cade nella follia dando inizio ad una serie di allucinazioni, impersonandosi in un primo momento nella figura di un dittatore pronto a dichiarare odio verso chiunque non fosse stato dalla sua parte. Dopodichè la sua mente giunta sull’orlo dell’oblio, stoppa per un attimo queste allucinazioni per poi riprenderle successivamente in maniera più irrompente con uno show del tutto atipico (la canzone Stop della durata di soli 30 secondi indicherà questo piccolo momento di lucidità del personaggio).
L’ultima allucinazione ha come spettacolo quello che di fatto è un “processo” in cui l’imputato è proprio Pink, dinnanzi ad un giudice (rappresentato da un verme) e all’accusa formata dal crudele professore, dalla madre iperprotettiva e dalla moglie che lo tradiva: le componenti a cui lui attribuiva la costruzione del muro. La sentenza finale del giudice lo obbligherà ad abbattere questo muro che egli ha costruito attorno a sè e a mettersi a nudo di fronte alla realtà della vita. L'opera si conclude con la poesia Outside the wall che recita i seguenti versi:
"All alone or in twos
The ones who really love you
Walk up and down outside the wall
Some hand in hand
And some gather together in bands
The bleeding hearts and the artists
Make their stand
And when they've given you their all
Some stagger and fall after all it's not easy
Banging your heart against some mad buggers wall
Isn't this where?"
L’opera va a toccare quindi tematiche forti di studi nella #filosofia e #psicologia, ma anche riferimenti importanti di #storia e #umanita. Mi sembra opportuno esporre quest'opera suddividendola in 4 parti (che vi proporrò in un post successivo) così come era divisa la versione Vinile dell'album:
Disco 1-A: Infanzia e prima giovinezza;
Disco 1-B: La vita da rock-star, la crisi, Pink inizia ad analizzare la sua vita;
Disco 2-A: Isolamento psicologico, chiusura del muro;
Disco 2-B: La follia ed il processo.
IL FILM
Il film Pink Floyd – The Wall rappresenta la terza fase del progetto (la prima fase è il disco mentre la seconda è la coreografia/esposizione nei concerti), esso è stato progettato e sceneggiato da Waters con la regia di Alan Parker. Essendo il film basato sul disco e non viceversa, rappresenta una “colonna visiva” dell’album dando così a Waters la possibilità di rappresentare le similitudini e le metafore espresse all'interno delle sue canzoni.
Le immagini animate presenti nel film sono state disegnate da Gerald Scarfe, famoso fumettista inglese. Queste animazioni venivano proiettate durante i live in uno schermo circolare ed alcune venivano impersonate da pupazzi giganteschi pronti a spuntare fuori da qualche angolo di palco.

Un'altra nota interessante del film è il suo interprete, il personaggio di Pink viene infatti impersonato da Bob Geldof famoso cantante, attore e attivista irlandese (impegnato in cause a favore della lotta contro la fame e le malattie, impegno che l’ha portato nel tempo a trascurare le altre due carriere).
LO SPETTACOLO
Lo spettacolo dal vivo di The Wall è sempre stato un progetto molto ambizioso di Waters. Già dagli anni '80 era uno show unico nel suo genere: venivano riprodotte scene del film in appositi spazi del palco, veniva costruito pezzo per pezzo un muro di polistirolo che finiva per nascondere la band al pubblico per poi essere demolito all'ultima canzone...effetti scenici, sonori, visivi, pirotecnici e chi più ne ha più ne metta.
Credo però che Waters abbia raggiunto l'apice della realizzazione nel tour del 2010-2013 dove ha riproposto lo spettacolo di The Wall aggiungendo delle tecnologie all'avanguardia come ad esempio un impianto audio a 360° (che quando parte l'effetto dell'elicottero sembra davvero che stia girando sulle teste del pubblico), e una regia di video proiettori ad alta definizione che trasmettono immagini (sia relative al film, sia coreografiche, studiate appositamente per questo genere di live) sulla parete bianca mano a mano che essa viene costruita. Questa evoluzione dello spettacolo ha portato alla produzione di una seconda pellicola che viene definita un film concerto: Roger Waters: The Wall (2014).

Per chi si fosse perso questo spettacolo è disponibile online e in dvd, non avrà lo stesso effetto di vederlo dal vivo, ma credo che sia comunque uno show da guardare per poterne apprezzare l'immenso lavoro e la sua unicità.

Good morning to all the #music community of #hive!
Today I want to talk with you about a great musical work: The Wall - Pink Floyd (1979).

More or less we all know this historical record of #PinkFloyd, after all who has never listened to one of the great songs like "Another brick in the wall (part 2)", "Mother", "Comfortably numb" etc.. !?? But in this post, in addition to the priceless songs I want to try to expose all the features and details that have made #TheWall a work really unique of its kind.
Since the beginning, the album has been conceived with a structure that can be presented as a musical record, a movie and a live show, and for this reason it is considered a Rock Opera (other examples of Rock Operas were Tommy and Quadrophenia by The Who). The whole album was written by the singer Roger Waters and reveals many autobiographical notes.
Before starting, I would like to point out that the album does not directly deal with the Berlin Wall, although Waters has always been politically active and even organized the concert for the fall of the wall. This album in fact was born as an introspective and very psychological vision about the human condition and the walls that we build around us to "defend" ourselves but that end up isolating us. This concept will then be expanded and become a motto against any type of wall or barrier.
THE PLOT
The work has as its protagonist Floyd Pinkerson (Pink), a rock star with a very complex psychological profile. Within the texts we can identify the events that have marked his life and his reactions to them, being able to understand the causes and consequences that these events have brought on his personality and his behavior.
In fact, in the grip of a crisis, during the most difficult period of his career, he realizes that throughout his life he has built a huge wall around himself in order to defend himself from the difficulties of the world. So he begins to summarize all the events that have contributed to the building of this wall, brick by brick: the death of his father, the asphyxiating attentions of his mother, the isolation and distance created by his working condition, the betrayal and loss of love, the addiction to drugs and to a promiscuous life rich in "things" and increasingly poor in essence.
Summarizing all the painful and unresolved points of his life, Pink falls into pain starting a series of hallucinations, impersonating himself at first in the figure of a dictator ready to declare hatred towards anyone who was not on his side. Then his mind, having reached the brink of oblivion, stops these hallucinations for a moment and then resumes them later in a more disruptive way with an atypical show (the song Stop lasting only 30 seconds will indicate this small moment of lucidity of the character).
The last hallucination has as its show what is in fact "The trial" in which the defendant is Pink, in front of a judge (represented by a worm) and the prosecution formed by the cruel professor, his overprotective mother and his cheating wife: the components to which he attributed the construction of the wall. The judge's final sentence will force him to tear down this wall that he has built around himself and lay himself bare to the reality of life. The opera concludes with the poem Outside the wall which reads the following lines:
"All alone or in twos.
The ones who really love you
Walk up and down outside the wall

The work touches strong themes of studies in #philosophy and #psychology, but also important references of #history and #humanity. It seems appropriate to expose this work by dividing it into 4 parts (which I will propose in a later post) as it was divided into the Vinyl version of the album:
Disc 1-A: Infancy and Early Youth;
Disc 1-B: Rock star life, crisis, Pink begins to analyze his life;
Disc 2-A: Psychological isolation, closing the wall;
Disc 2-B: Madness and the trial.
THE MOVIE
The film Pink Floyd - The Wall represents the third phase of the project (the first phase is the album while the second is the choreography/exhibition in concerts), it was scripted by Waters and directed by Alan Parker. Since the film is based on the record and not vice versa it represents a "visual-track" of the album, thus giving Waters the opportunity to represent the similarities and metaphors expressed within his songs.
The animated images in the film were drawn by Gerald Scarfe, a famous English illustrator. These animations were projected during live performances in a circular screen and some were impersonated by giant puppets ready to pop out from some corner of the stage.

Another interesting note of the film is its interpreter, the character of Pink is in fact played by Bob Geldof famous Irish singer, actor and activist (committed to causes in favor of the fight against hunger and disease, a commitment that has led him over time to neglect the other two careers).
THE SHOW
The live show of The Wall has always been a very ambitious project of Waters. Since the '80s it was a unique show of its kind: scenes from the film were reproduced in special spaces of the stage, during the show were built piece by piece a Styrofoam wall that ended up hiding the band to the public and then be demolished at the last song ... stage effects, sound, visual, pyrotechnics and so on and so forth.
However, I believe that Waters has reached the apex of the realization in the tour of 2010-2013 where he re-proposed the show of The Wall adding cutting-edge technologies such as a 360° audio system (that when the helicopter effect starts it really seems to be turning over the heads of the audience), and a grid of high definition video projectors that transmit images (both related to the film, both choreographic, designed specifically for this kind of live) on the white wall as it is built. This evolution of the show led to the production of a second film that is defined as a concert film: Roger Waters: The Wall (2014).

For those who missed this show it's available online and on dvd, it won't have the same effect as seeing it live, but I think it's still a show you have to watch to appreciate the immense work and uniqueness.
