When it comes to musical geniuses, perhaps few can name Thom Yorke, frontman, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and artist in a whole host of fields, not just music. A guy who can turn a repetitive loop into a masterpiece of both progressive rock and electronica, and not look bad in the process! This is the case with "Everything In Its Right Place", a track you'll find on Radiohead's "Kid A" that will blow your mind. An experience that I recommend to everyone reading me and to anyone who really wants to disconnect and feel what music, lyrics and rhythm can do to the senses. And I'm just getting started... A genius, a monumental artist and a stalwart of music in recent years.
The making of this post, for me, is a mixture of anxiety, emotion and above all, a challenge to reconcile the admiration I feel for this subject, and at the same time align it with the necessary objectivity to provide substance to these lines. I'll try, but I'll tell you right now, if you compare what you are about to read with other posts I've done, you'll notice that I definitely love this guy: irreplaceable for me. And someone who simply cannot be limited to simple adjectives. Thom Yorke makes music sound like the last minute of "Decks Dark". A combination of dark chords and harmonies, but at the same time with a soul-shattering beauty.
Cuando hablamos de genios musicales, quizá pocos podremos nombrar a Thom Yorke, líder, vocalista, multi-instrumentista, compositor, productor y artista en un montón de rubros; que no sólo abarcan a lo referido con la música. Un sujeto que puede hacer de un loop repetitivo, una obra de arte tanto del rock progresivo como de la electrónica, ¡y no quedar mal en el proceso! Este es el caso de "Everything In Its Right Place", un tema que encontrarán en el "Kid A" de Radiohead y que les volará la cabeza. Una experiencia que recomiendo a todas las personas que me lees y a cualquier que realmente desee desconectarse y sentir lo que la música, la lírica y el ritmo pueden hacer con los sentidos. Y apenas estoy comenzando... Un genio, un monumental artista y un valuarte de la música de los últimos años.
La realización de este post, para mí es una mezcla de ansiedad, emoción y sobre todo, un desafío para poder reconciliar la admiración que siento por este sujeto, y al mismo tiempo alinearla con la objetividad necesaria para brindarle sustancia a estas líneas. Lo intentaré, pero desde ya les digo, que si comparan esto que van a leer con otras publicaciones que haya hecho, notarán que definitivamente, amo a este tipo: un irremplazable para mí. Y alguien que sencillamente, no puede ser limitado a simples adjetivos. Thom Yorke, hace que la música suene como el último minuto de duración de "Decks Dark". Una combinación de acordes y armonías tenebrosas pero al mismo tiempo con una belleza que te trastoca el alma.
To talk about this guy's career is to talk about a return to humanity from within. To those introspections we always tend to have minutes before lying down to sleep, or when we are going through a hard time and feel the unmistakable chill running down our back. A hit to that shiver we instantly feel when we find the best song for the best moment. The power in every beat, in every musical arrangement and that voice - my God, that voice that says it all! For those who have had to spend so much of their lives in periods of loneliness (forced or by life choices), Radiohead's musical repertoire is fundamental to really empathise with that most misunderstood state of living: the beauty of pain and darkness.
Hablar de la carrera de este tipo es hablar de un regreso a la humanidad desde adentro. A esas introspecciones que siempre solemos tener minutos antes de acostarnos en la cama a dormir, o cuando pasamos por un momento duro y sentimos el inconfundible frío recorriendo nuestra espalda. Un golpe a ese escalofrío que instantáneamente sentimos cuando hallamos la mejor canción para el mejor momento. El poder que hay en cada ritmo, en cada arreglo musical y esa voz.. ¡Dios mío, esa voz que lo dice todo! Para quienes hayan tenido que pasar muchísimo tiempo de sus vidas en períodos de soledad (forzada o por elecciones de vida) el repertorio musical de Radiohead, es fundamental para realmente sentir empatía por ese estado tan incomprendido del vivir: la belleza del dolor y la oscuridad.
In this sense, much of Thom Yorke's contribution to music lies precisely in that way of finding comfort and creativity in uncommon and commercially unexplored and unexploited places, such as negative emotions. By this, I don't mean to make an ode to the private or hurtful side of human beings, nor am I trying to romanticise trauma or pain as a precious virtue; but at the same time it would be unfair not to say that joy is just as valid as anger or abandonment: and that music as such is shallow on these subjects. But with Yorke, we find that magic in the depth of the negative.
Many times, I have imagined the musical work of this wonderful artist with the grim and beautiful surrealist illustrations of Leonora Carrington. A woman, the latter who was one of the greatest representatives of those artists of the 30's, 40's and who in her work has that mysticism and that tenebrosity that few try to capture with such success. I insist, Thom Yorke's majestic contribution is tremendously underestimated, for the magnitude of his legacy, as a contribution to contemporary music and not to mention within rock in general and the legacy of wonderful artists that the United Kingdom has always given us, but with greater publicity and influence from the last century to the present day.
En este sentido, gran parte del aporte que ha tenido Thom Yorke para la música radica ahí, precisamente en esa forma de encontrar comodidad y creatividad en lugares pocos comunes y que comercialmente no son tan explorados ni explotados, como son las emociones negativas. Con esto, no quiero hacer una oda ante el lado privado o doloso de los seres humanos, ni tampoco intento romantizar los traumas ni el dolor como una virtud preciosa; pero al mismo tiempo sería injusto no decir que la alegría es tan válida como lo es la ira o el abandono: y que la música como tal es poco profunda en estos temas. Pero con Yorke, hallamos esa magia en la profundidad de lo negativo.
Muchas veces, he imaginado la obra musical de este artista maravilloso con lo lúgubre y hermoso que fueron las ilustraciones surrealistas de Leonora Carrington. Una mujer, esta última que fue una de las más grandes representantes de aquellos artistas de los 30's, 40's y que en su obra de haya ese misticismo y ese tenebrosidad que pocos intentan plasmar con tanto acierto. Insisto, el aporte majestuoso de Thom Yorke es tremendamente infravalorado, para la magnitud que tiene como legado, como aporte a la música contemporánea y ni hablar dentro del rock en general y la herencia de artistas maravillosos que el Reino Unido nos ha dado desde siempre, pero con mayor publicidad e influencia desde el pasado siglo hasta nuestros días.
This indescribably good guy is 54 years old. From a very young age composing music and making revolutions wherever he went. It is the contribution of his inner power that makes him so wonderful. In his early albums, with Radiohead, mixing anger with melancholy and making anthems entirely out of a song as sad and powerful as "Creep". Many times, we pass by, stopping for a moment and thinking "Hey, are you really listening to what you're chanting at the top of your lungs?" And this is neither Yorke's fault, nor Radiohead's, but rather the intense campaign of promotions, publicity and immediacy that we always tend to demand.
54 años de edad cumple este sujeto indescriptiblemente bueno. Desde muy joven componiendo música y haciendo revoluciones a donde sea que fue. El aporte de su poderío interno es lo que lo hace tan maravilloso. En sus primeros discos, con Radiohead, mezclando la ira con la melancolía y haciendo himnos enteramente de una canción tan triste como poderosa como lo es "Creep". Muchas veces, pasamos de largo al detenernos un instante y pensar "¡Hey!, ¿Estás realmente escuchando lo que estás coreando a toda voz?" Beauty is always admired with a certain patience, and that is what anyone will find within the enormous career of Thom Yorke, a guy who like very few others has understood the value of excellent production and the combination of being truly honest with making quality material for life. I make a public challenge, who hasn't listened to Radiohead or Yorke's solo work and not liked some of his songs? I think the answer is more than obvious. And there's a reason for that; and it's none other than that you feel connected to the sound that enters your ears but that you've long since felt it in every part of your body and you simply respond positively to it.
"Just", "Paranoid Android", "Karma Police", "High and Dry", "No Surprises", and a whole host of hit lists can be found behind what Thom Yorke has done and continues to do. A guy who is revered worldwide and who is well positioned with respect to other musicians, both in the rock and roll genre, as well as in other genres such as: electronic, pop and even reggae, where many of his works have been covered. No matter what your preferences are, or how you conceive music from your senses, you should invest a few minutes and just let yourself be carried away by the sound, the power and the strength that a small, ordinary and quiet guy can achieve. And he is, as I said in the title of the post, simply an impressive man, artist and musician.
La belleza siempre suele admirarse con cierta paciencia, y eso es lo que cualquier podrá encontrar dentro de la enorme carrera de Thom Yorke, un sujeto que como muy pocos ha entendido en valor de una excelente producción y la combinación de ser realmente honesto con hacer un material de calidad para toda la vida. Hago un reto público, ¿quién no ha oído alguna vez a Radiohead o a Yorke, en algún trabajo en solitario y no le ha gustado algunas de sus canciones? Creo que la respuesta es más que obvio. Y eso tiene un por qué; y no es otro más que sentirte conectado con el sonido que entra por tus oídos pero que ya desde hace mucho lo has sentido en cada ápice de tu cuerpo y sencillamente, respondes positivamente ante él.

Sin importar las preferencias que tengas, o cómo concibas la música desde tus sentidos, deberías invertir algunos minutos y tan sólo dejarte llevar por el sonido, el poderío y la fuerza que un sujeto menudo, ordinario y tranquilo puede lograr. Y es que, como he dicho en el título del post, sencillamente un hombre, artista y músico impresionante.
