In this community I have talked about the best rock and roll bands that have ever existed. I cover everything from The Beatles" to Tool. Always with the intention of using my greatest objectivity in terms of my own musical tastes. That's how we come to today's topic, remembering the majestic and splendid career that Audioslave had. Undoubtedly, the best modern success that the masterful mind of producer Rick Rubin has ever had.
For those who don't know him, Rubin is the creative mind behind bands like Slayer, RUN DMC, Aerosmith, some of Tupac's albums, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, among many others. It was he, along with Chris Cornell, who, with the anger and social sense of the former Rage Against The Machine, was the exponent of the Grunge era.
En esta comunidad he hablado sobre las mejores bandas de rock and roll que han existido. Abarco desde The Beatles" hasta Tool. Siempre con la intención de emplear mi mayor objetividad en cuanto a mis propios gustos musicales. Es así como llegamos al tema que hoy nos ocupa, recordar la carrera majestuosa y espléndida que tuvo Audioslave. Sin lugar a dudas, el mejor acierto moderno que haya tenido la magistral mente de productor que posee Rick Rubin.
Para quienes no lo conozcan, Rubin, es la mente creadora detrás de bandas como Slayer, RUN DMC, Aerosmith, algunos discos de Tupac, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, entre muchísimas más. Fue él, quien junto a Chris Cornell, exponente de la era Grunge con la ira y el sentido social de los ex Rage Against The Machine.
Audioslave is the definition of what fusion can achieve within a genre, which for too long, has been intended to be rigid and fundamentalist. It is the pinnacle of the best combinations of multiple genres such as: hip hop, rap, American soul and the blues bases that Tom Morello (the band's guitarist) employs.
In addition, all these "ingredients" have the incomparable voice of Chris Cornell. A guy who has already written several pages in the history of rock and roll, and who brings to this project the touch of hard rock, darkness and tense calm that his unique voice possesses. This is how we arrive at the importance that the much questioned but well aged era of the 2000's had for the genre.
Audioslave es la definición de la que puede llegar a lograr la fusión dentro de un género, que por demasiado tiempo, se ha pretendido que sea rígido y fundamentalista. Es la cúspide más grande de las mejores combinaciones de múltiples géneros como: el hip hop, rap, soul americano y las bases de blues que emplea Tom Morello (guitarrista de la banda).
Además, todos estos "ingredientes" cuentan con la voz incomparable de Chris Cornell. Un sujeto que ya ha escrito varias páginas dentro de la historia del rock and roll, y que aporta a este proyecto el toque de hard rock, oscuridad y calma tensa que posee su única voz. Es así como llegamos a la importancia que tuvo para el género la tan cuestionada pero bien envejecida era de los años 2000's.
Bands like Linkin Park (which, by the way, there are several posts about them in my feed) Limp Bizkit and Slipknot, broke all the progressive and restrained paradigms that dominated the previous era and that still had some reminiscence in the new millennium. The sound that distinguishes Audioslave is a typical composition of what we have been hearing in Rage Against The Machine. Let's remember that 3 of the 4 members were ex-members of that band. But with the depth that only Cornell could bring.
The critics immediately loved them. And sorry, but it was impossible not to be carried away by the sound that these four guys made. They were magical, versatile, and talented. We can delight in songs like "Show me how to live", which, accompanied by a spectacular video, was the jewel in the crown for making disasters within the programming of an increasingly depleted MTV. In 2004, these guys appeared to take the place they deserved and make a whole generation of young people not forget the importance of the energy and rebelliousness that rock has always had as a human creation.
Bandas como Linkin Park (que, por cierto, hay varios posts sobre ellos en mi feed) Limp Bizkit y Slipknot, rompieron todos los paradigmas progresivos y comedidos que dominaron la época anterior y que aún tenían cierta reminiscencia entrado el nuevo milenio. El sonido que distingue a Audioslave es una composición típica del que veníamos escuchando en Rage Against The Machine. Recordemos, que 3 de los 4 integrantes eran ex miembros de ésa banda. Pero con la profundidad que solo Cornell podía aportar.
De inmediato la crítica los adoró. Y perdón, pero es que resultaba imposible no dejarse llevar por el sonido que éstos cuatro sujetos hacían. Eran mágicos, versátiles, y talentosos. Podemos deleitarnos con temas como "Show me how to live", que acompañado con un vídeo espectacular, fue la joya de la corona para hacer desastres dentro de la programación de un, cada vez más mermado MTV. En 2004, estos muchachos aparecieron para tomar el puesto que se merecían y hacer que una generación entera de jóvenes, no olvidasen la importancia que tiene la energía y la rebeldía que siempre ha tenido el rock como creación humana.
Now, why should we be aware of the importance of Audioslave for contemporary music? From my perspective, because it brought a versatility that simply broke with the established schemes within the same genre (rock). In addition, the union of the different currents of thought, and therefore, of ways of making and understanding music, that the band members themselves had, made the final work much more substantial and above all, unpredictable. Suddenly we could hear a powerful, Grammy-winning power ballad as a social and political critique all in one.
In that sense, musically speaking, it was a marvel. I challenge anyone reading this post to listen to any Audioslave track and relate their experience while doing so. It is impossible not to be amazed by the changing rhythms, melodies, tempos and counter tempos. The bass base is solid, perfect and always a guarantee of idyllic synchronicity with the drummer. He always contributed just what each song needed. Neither too little nor too much; just the right and essential for the result that we all enjoy to be unbeatable.
Ahora bien, ¿por qué deberíamos tomar consciencia de la importancia de Audioslave para la música contemporánea? Desde mi perspectiva, porque trajo una versatilidad que sencillamente rompía con los esquemas establecidos dentro del mismo género (el rock). Además, la unión de las distintas corrientes de pensamientos, y por tanto, de maneras de hacer y entender la música, que los propios integrantes de la banda tenían, hizo que el trabajo final fuese mucho más sustancial y sobre todo, impredecible. De repente podíamos oír una power ballad poderosa y ganadora de Grammys, como crítica social y política; todo en uno.
En ese sentido, musicalmente hablando era una maravilla. Reto a quien sea que lea este post, a escuchar cualquier tema de Audioslave y contar su experiencia mientras lo hace. Es imposible no dejarse maravillar por los cambios de ritmos, melodías, tempos y contratempos. La base del bajo es sólida, perfecta y siempre una garantía de sincronía idílica para con el baterista. Que siempre aportó justamente lo que cada tema necesitaba. Ni poco ni demasiado; precisamente lo justo y esencial para que el resultado que todos disfrutamos, sea insuperable.
And I'm not even talking about the two men responsible for the marvellous productions, albums and songs that we can hear today. Yes, Tom Morello, the genius behind the unique way of playing the guitar, and Chris Cornell. Without wishing to read too much into it, this guy defines what we all understand about harmony, power and passion. As if all that they achieved wasn't enough, let's also add that they sincerely had a connection to justice and the problems of the typical, normal man on the street; just like you and me. Perhaps that need to never leave where they came from influenced them to be the first American rock band to visit Havana, Cuba, and they played a show that also became an official DVD. Quite an achievement for American music.
"Like A Stone", "Show me how to live", "Shadow on the sun", "Gasoline", "Be Yourself", "Cochise", "Revelations", "Doesn't Remind Me", and I could go on for a couple more paragraphs, but it wouldn't be wise; they are just some of the hits that Audioslave harvested during the years they lasted (from 2001 until Cornell's death in 2017). A short career but one that never went unnoticed, and which bequeathed us a trajectory that we can review in their three studio albums and multiple concerts and collaborations with other bands. Unrepeatable, majestic, talented but above all, creative; this defines Audioslave forever.
Y eso que aún no hablo de los dos responsables de la maravilla de producciones, álbumes y canciones que hoy podemos oír. Sí, Tom Morello, el genio detrás de un modo único de tocar la guitarra, y Chris Cornell. Que sin ánimos de leerme exagerado, este sujeto define lo que todos entendemos sobre armonía, poder y pasión. Por si fuera poco todo lo que lograron, también demos agregar que sinceramente tenían una conexión con la justicia y los problemas del hombre a pie típico y normal; así como tú y como yo. Quizá esa necesidad de jamás abandonar el lugar de proveniencia, les influyó para ser la primera banda de rock estadounidense que visitara La Habana, Cuba, y que hicieron un show que también se volvió un DVD oficial. Todo un logro para la música de ese país.
"Like A Stone", "Show me how to live", "Shadow on the sun", "Gasoline", "Be Yourself", "Cochise", "Revelations", "Doesn't Remind Me", y podría seguir hasta ocupar un par de párrafos más, pero no sería prudente; son tan sólo algunos de lo éxitos que la Audioslave cosechó durante toda los años que duraron (desde el 2001 hasta la muerte de Cornell en 2017). Una carrera corta pero que jamás pasó desapercibida, y que nos legó una trayectoria que podemos repasar en sus tres álbumes de estudio y múltiples conciertos y colaboraciones con otras bandas. Irrepetibles, majestuosos, talentosos pero sobre todo, creativos; esto define a los Audioslave para siempre.
