Éstas son cosas que por lo general no asociamos a la música, y muchas personas no las consideran parte de la misma en sí.
No obstante, no veo esto así; la música, más allá de ser un tema de teoría y armonía, es un tema de sentimientos, de expresión. Es arte. Por lo tanto, lleva la expresión de cualquier tipo, y si el ruido y el caos son usados para expresar, entonces black midi es increíble en su campo.
The noise. The clutter. The chaos.
These are things that we generally do not associate with music, and many people do not consider them part of music itself.
However, I do not see it that way; music, beyond being a subject of theory and harmony, is a subject of feelings, of expression. It is art. Therefore, it carries expression of any kind, and if noise and chaos are used to express, then black midi is amazing in its field.

En 2019 lanzaron su debut, Schlagenheim, y ganaron la aclamación de la crítica y del público, trayendo un sonido caótico, pesado, desastroso, combinado con una constante crítica social.
Este fue un disco centrado en la parte más alocada del Math Rock y el Brutal Prog, pudiendo ser comparada a veces con bandas como Hella.
Para Cavalcade, black midi logra un sonido más organizado, creando los sonidos perfectos para tratar el drama humano, que es el centro neurálgico del álbum.
black midi is a band known for leading the current Art-punk and Art-rock scene.
In 2019 they released their debut, Schlagenheim, and gained critical and public acclaim, bringing a chaotic, heavy, disastrous sound, combined with constant social criticism.
This was an album focused on the craziest part of Math Rock and Brutal Prog, being sometimes compared to bands like Hella.
For Cavalcade, black midi achieves a more organized sound, creating the perfect sounds to deal with the human drama, which is the nerve center of the album.
El disco empieza con John L, y la canción se encarga de hacernos saber que estamos en un disco de black midi. Ese ritmo de batería interrumpido por silencios que luego acompaña un violín y un saxofón dando notas disonantes, el bajo alocándose lentamente. Se siente como una combinación extraña entre el free-jazz y el Math Rock. Lo que más me afianza esta extraña combinación es el piano, el cual se une a toda esta maraña de caos.
Hay que destacar la maestría que tiene cada uno de los músicos de la banda; el Math Rock es un género que particularmente requiere de músicos experimentados en su instrumento, y el que más me encanta de todos ellos es su baterista: Morgan Simpson.
Los solos de batería que él toca durante todo el álbum son demenciales, y en la segunda mitad de John L. podemos apreciar esta habilidad aún más.
Una gran apertura, que nos llevará por todo este viaje de drama y caos.
The album begins with John L, and the song is responsible for letting us know that we are in a black midi album. That drum beat interrupted by silences and then accompanied by a violin and a saxophone giving dissonant notes, the bass slowly going crazy. It feels like a strange combination between free-jazz and Math Rock. The thing that most anchors this strange combination for me is the piano, which joins all this tangle of chaos.
It is worth mentioning the mastery of each of the musicians in the band; Math Rock is a genre that particularly requires experienced musicians on their instrument, and the one I love most of all of them is their drummer: Morgan Simpson.
The drum solos he plays throughout the album are insane, and in the second half of John L. we can appreciate this skill even more.
A great opening, that will take us through this whole journey of drama and chaos.
Pero, de forma repentina todo cambia a una balada dirigida por una guitarra acústica. Estamos en Marlene Dietrich.
Esto me confirma algo, y es que black midi no es una banda ruidosa por el placer del ruido. Utilizan el caos, el desorden, y todos estos elementos para expresar un mensaje general.
Esta canción habla de una actriz nacida en alemania de nacionalidad estadounidense llamada Marlene Dietrich, y cómo ella utilizaba la actuación como una forma de escape al dolor y a la melancolía, cosa que muchos artistas han hecho en el pasado.
Los temas existenciales y las problemáticas sociales son temas recurrentes en este disco, y esto es lo que vuelve a Cavalcade un disco más enfocado en el drama que en la energía.
But, suddenly everything changes to a ballad led by an acoustic guitar. We are in Marlene Dietrich.
This confirms something for me, and that is that black midi is not a noisy band for the pleasure of noise. They use chaos, disorder, and all these elements to express a general message.
This song talks about a German-born actress of American nationality named Marlene Dietrich, and how she used acting as a form of escape from pain and melancholy, something that many artists have done in the past.
Existential themes and social issues are recurring topics on this album, and this is what makes Cavalcade an album more focused on drama than energy.
La problemática existencial se afianza en ciertas canciones, como en Slow. Una canción de Jazz-punk que comparada con otros tracks del disco es bastante calmada.
Slow trata acerca de una persona que está esperando a que el mundo se acabe, y se ve frustrada por la lentitud con la que este llega a su fin. Todo, lentamente, va acabando, y eso es un sentimiento agónico que atormenta a quienes piensan en ello.

How much further must I wake?»
La vida, irónica ella, dura más para quienes desean que acabe.
The existential problematic takes hold in certain songs, as in Slow. A jazz-punk song that compared to other tracks on the album is quite calm.
Slow is about a person who is waiting for the world to end, and is frustrated by the slowness with which it is coming to an end. Everything, slowly, is coming to an end, and that is an agonizing feeling that torments those who think about it.

Life, ironic as it is, lasts longer for those who wish it to end.
El otro tópico recurrente es el conflicto social, y en eso entra Dethroned.
Aquí el talento de Morgan en la batería es demencial.
También Gordie Greep hace un performance bastante bueno; se nota en su voz la decepción, el dolor, la ira, la impotencia, y no es para menos. Dethroned es una canción que habla de como destronan a un rey, y explora los sentimientos del mismo luego de esta derrota.
Afrontar la realidad, la furia, la desolación, lentamente se van volviendo participes en la canción hasta que todo es desorden y gritos.
The other recurring topic is social conflict, and that's where Dethroned comes in.
Here Morgan's talent on drums is insane.
Gordie Greep also gives a pretty good performance; you can hear the disappointment, pain, wrath, impotence in his voice, and no wonder. Dethroned is a song that talks about how a king is, for the sake of redundancy, dethroned, and explores the feelings of the king after this defeat.
Facing reality, fury, desolation, slowly become part of the song until everything is disorder and screams.
El ser humano, tal y como se presenta, es un animal que viene con una desventaja: la conciencia sobre si mismo.
A pesar de ser esto lo que nos permite sobrevivir, al mismo tiempo ha traído muchas problemáticas que nos atormentan: los sentimientos, el conocer la realidad de nuestro mundo, la desesperanza, y más pensamientos que nos persiguen cuando menos los esperamos.
Y precisamente de eso trata Cavalcade.
black midi ha hecho uno de los mejores discos del año, y me han dejado con ganas de ver qué harán en el futuro. Estaré muy atento a lo que hagan.
The human being, as he presents himself, is an animal that comes with a disadvantage: self-awareness.
Although this is what allows us to survive, at the same time it has brought many problems that torment us: feelings, knowing the reality of our world, hopelessness, and more thoughts that haunt us when we least expect them.
And that is precisely what Cavalcade is about.
black midi have made one of the best albums of the year, and have left me eager to see what they will do in the future. I'll be keeping a close eye on what they do.
