Luego de pensar bastante en qué álbum reseñar como el primero, escogí este por dos motivos: primero porque me encanta, y segundo porque es bastante reciente.
Así es. Como has podido leer en el título, esta es una reseña de For The First Time, de Black Country, New Road.

After thinking a lot of which album review as the first one, I choosed this one because of two reasons: first because I love it, and second because it is pretty recent.
That's right. As you read in the title, this is a review of For The First Time, by Black Country, New Road.
Black Country, New Road es una banda proveniente de Londres, Reino Unido, la cual se ha hecho un nombre en la escena experimental de Brixton, Windmill, gracias a diversos conciertos locales.
La banda ganaría repercusión a nivel internacional cuando sacaran su primer sencillo: "Sunglasses", el cual nos dejó con ganas de más al ver esa combinación ostentosa entre el post-rock y el post-punk.
Con el pasar del tiempo, nos brindaron otro Single más, anunciando también su debut: For The First Time
Black Country, New Road it is a band from London, United Kingdom, which has made itself a name in the experimental scene of Brixton, Windmill, due to many local concerts they did.
The band would gain repercussion internationally when they put out their first single: "Sunglasses", which let us all wanting more after listening to that striking combination between post-rock and post-punk.
A year later, they put out another Single annoucing their debut: For The First Time
He de decir que, desde que descubrí la existencia de Sunglasses estaba bastante emocionado por este debut, y por ver qué sucedería con esta banda tan curiosa.
Para mi suerte, este álbum superó mis expectativas completamente, siendo uno de los mejores álbumes que nos ha dado el 2021 hasta la fecha.
Así que, sin más preámbulo, empecemos a hablar del álbum.
I have to say, since I discovered the existance of Sunglasses I was very excited for this debut, and for seeing what would happen to this interesting band.
For my luck, this album completely overcame my expectations, being one of the best albums this 2021 has gave to us.
So, without going any further, let's dive into this album.
El álbum abre con una pieza instrumental, llamada irónicamente "Instrumental".
Esta canción muestra una gran capacidad de coordinación de parte de la banda, y nos va adentrando en el ambiente que tendrá todo el álbum: Oscuro, ruidoso, y a veces muy cambiante.
Con una combinación de diversos riffs, tanto en dos guitarras como en trompetas y en un bajo, la banda logra crear un tema que se va cargando lentamente con sonido cada vez más y más.
Charlie Wayne, baterista de la banda, hace un espléndido trabajo con esos sonidos orgánicos del redoblante, crea un patrón rítmico que se siente cambiante, pero que no deja de adaptarse a la canción.
Ya casi al final de la canción, cuando todo explota, todos los músicos explotan con ella, y entra el saxofonista Lewis Evans. Este da el toque final a la canción.
En lo personal, esta canción me recuerda a los antiguos quintetos de Jazz, los cuales sencillamente se coordinaban y tocaban por la pasión de hacerlo, pero combinando elementos del post-punk. Y simplemente me encanta.
The album opens with an instrumental cut, called ironically "Instrumental".
This song shows a great capacity of coordination from the band, and enter us in the ambient that all the album will have: An obscure, noisy, and sometimes pretty changing ambient.
With a combination of diverse riffs, from two guitars as in trompets and bass, the band accomplish to create a track that charges itself with sound more and more.
Charlie Wayne, the drummer of the band, does an splendid job with that organic sounds from the snare drum, creating a rythmic pattern that feels changing, but that doesn't stop adapting itself to the song.
Almost at the end of the song, when everything explodes, all the musicians explode with it, and the saxophonist Lewis Evans enter the song. He gaves the final touch to the track.
Personally, this song reminds me of the old quintets of Jazz, which they just coordinate themselves and played for the pasion of doing it, but adding post-punk elements. And I just love it.
La siguiente canción es "Athens, France", y aquí escuchamos por primera vez la voz del cantante, Isaac Wood. Su forma de cantar es, por decir algo, particular.
Isaac canta como si siempre estuviese al borde del llanto, y esto me fascina, porque siento que le añade al performance general de la canción, aportándole más sentimiento. A pesar de que sé que esta interpretación no podrá gustarle a mucha gente, me parece bastante buena, y le da un sello característico a la banda. La canción pasa por diversos cambios, como si estuviese dividida en varias secciones. Esto me recordó a otras bandas de Post-rock, como lo son Gospeed You! Black Emperor, o las canciones más extensas de Swans. Algo muy característico de esta banda es que sus canciones suelen ir creando momentum, hasta que en cierto momento se disuelve a algo más calmado.
La banda ha sido comparada varias veces con Slint, debido a que Black Country también cuenta historias en sus canciones, y se acompaña de la combinación de diversos géneros del rock experimental para darles sentimiento, y honestamente considero esta una comparación bastante acertada.
The next song is "Athens, France", and here we hear for the first time the voice of the singer, Isaac Wood. His way of singing is, to say the least, particular.
Isaac sings as if he is always on the verge of tears, and this fascinates me, because I feel that it adds to the overall performance of the song, giving it more feeling. Even though I know that not many people will like this interpretation, I think it's pretty good, and it gives the band a characteristic stamp. The song goes through several changes, as if it were divided into several sections. This reminded me of other Post-rock bands, such as Gospeed You! Black Emperor, or the longer songs of Swans. Something very characteristic of this band is that their songs tend to build momentum, until at a certain point it dissolves into something more peaceful.
The band has been compared several times to Slint, because Black Country also narrates stories in their songs, and goes along with the combination of various genres of experimental rock to give them feeling, and I honestly consider this a pretty accurate comparison.
También esta es la primera vez que entra la violinista, Georgia Ellery, la cual ayuda a darle un ambiente más profundo a las canciones, pero también más melódico.
Aproximadamente en la mitad de la canción todo se vuelve una canción muchísimo más tranquila, donde predominan las trompetas, el saxofón y la batería, mientras el violín acompaña en el fondo. Wood, por su parte, va cantando casi pegado al micrófono, narrando aún esta historia.
La outro es fantástica, la cual inicia con dos guitarras, una del lado izquierdo haciendo el riff, y otra del lado derecho acompañando con un patrón rítmico. A esto se le suma el violín y las trompetas, y lentamente esto va dando un ambiente espacioso, abundante, para cerrar con el leitmotiv de esta canción tocado por una trompeta.
This is also the first time that the violinist, Georgia Ellery, enters the band, which helps to give the songs a deeper, but also more melodic atmosphere.
Approximately in the middle of the song everything becomes a much calmer song, where trumpets, saxophone and drums predominate, while the violin accompanies in the background. Wood, for his part, sings almost glued to the microphone, still narrating this story.
The outro is fantastic, which starts with two guitars, one on the left side doing the riff, and the other on the right side accompanying with a rhythmic pattern. To this is added the violin and trumpets, and slowly this gives a spacious, abundant atmosphere, to close with the leitmotif of this song played by a trumpet.
Luego sigue "Science Fair", el principal single de este álbum.
Esta canción expresa una ansiedad constante, tomando inspiración del Free Jazz para hacer cuadros de ruido exagerados, sentimiento que Isaac Wood expresa perfectamente en su performance.
Muchas veces durante la canción aparece el saxofón tocando solos y riffs aleatorios, lo cual se acompaña con un sintetizador creando un aura que, en mi opinión, es bastante oscura y deprimente.
Un sintetizador acompañará a la canción durante toda su duración, y cuando la canción llega a su climax entra también el violín, e Isaac Wood empieza a gritar las líneas tan características "It's black country out there!". Fácilmente mi momento favorito del disco, con un aura oscura, ruidosa, y a veces sin sentido.
La canción mientras cierra es acompañada por más elementos del free jazz, y hace sentir como si la canción estuviese "cayendo" a los abismos.
Then follows "Science Fair", the lead single from this album.
This song expresses a constant feeling of anxiety, taking inspiration from Free Jazz to make exaggerated noise frames, a feeling that Isaac Wood expresses perfectly in his performance.
Many times during the song the saxophone appears playing solos and random riffs, which is accompanied by a synthesizer creating an aura that, in my opinion, is quite dark and depressing.
A synthesizer will accompany the song for its entire duration, and when the song reaches its climax the violin comes in as well, and Isaac Wood begins to scream the oh-so-characteristic lines "It's black country out there!". Easily my favorite moment of the album, with a dark, noisy, and at times nonsensical aura.
The song as it closes is accompanied by more free jazz elements, and makes it feel like the song is "falling" into the abyss.
Sunglasses, es sencillamente una canción fantástica. Es el tema más largo del disco, y logra condensar bastante bien los sentimientos de soledad, paz, y ansiedad de todo el álbum en tan solo 10 minutos. Con líneas como:
«I am a surprisingly smooth talker
And I am invincible in these sunglasses»
Podemos darnos cuenta de qué trata la canción: una canción que habla del narcisismo, y de cómo a veces ese ego se ata a objetos específicos que nos permiten a veces ser quienes mostramos a la sociedad. En este caso, unas gafas de sol.
La canción, así como las anteriores va creando tensión lentamente, hasta que en el refrán vuelven las influencias del Free Jazz y el Noise Rock para crear un aura estresante, ansiosa, y ruidosa, a lo que se suman los gritos de Isaac. Nuestro personaje no es nadie sin estas gafas.
El puente se siente un desastre, con el violín de un lado, y el saxofón por el otro, mientras la intensidad del canto de Wood va aumentando poco a poco.
Esta canción la siento como una exposición de inseguridades de parte del personaje, y su amor tan incontrolable al objeto que lo hace "ser quien es".
Sunglasses, is simply a fantastic song.
It is the longest track on the album, and manages to condense the feelings of loneliness, peace, and anxiety of the entire album quite well in just 10 minutes.
With lines like:
"I am a surprisingly smooth talker
And I am invincible in these sunglasses ".
We can realize what the song is about: a song that talks about narcissism, and how sometimes that ego is tied to specific objects that allow us to be who we show to society. In this case, sunglasses.
The song, as well as the previous ones slowly builds tension, until in the refrain the Free Jazz and Noise Rock influences return to create a stressful, anxious, and noisy aura, to which Isaac's screams are added. Our character is nobody without these glasses.
The bridge feels like a mess, with violin on one side, and saxophone on the other, as the intensity of Wood's singing slowly builds.
This song feels to me like an exposure of insecurities on the part of the character, and his uncontrollable love of the object that makes him "who he is".
Track X es una bella canción, la cual cuenta una historia de amor y pérdida. Es la canción más corta del álbum, y también la más bella. Mayormente siendo una guitarra, el violín (al principio haciendo un pizzicato), el sintetizador y el saxofón. Esta canción me transmite una paz absoluta, y me parece que la historia solo enaltece este hecho. La canción termina con el sintetizador haciendo un fade out, y entramos al tema que cierra el disco: "Opus".
Track X is a beautiful song, which tells a story of love and loss.
It is the shortest song on the album, and also the most beautiful. Mostly being a guitar, violin (at the beginning doing a pizzicato), synthesizer and saxophone.
This song conveys an absolute peace to me, and it seems to me that the story only enhances this fact.
The song ends with the synthesizer fading out, and we enter the closing track of the album: "Opus".
Esta canción abre con un violín trágico, que al mismo tiempo me da un sentimiento de nostalgia bastante fuerte, pero en ese momento entra la batería, y rápidamente la canción toma una dirección completamente distinta.
La velocidad se intensifica, se siente como una prisa constante, pero rápidamente volvemos a la calma y al violín trágico, y ahí entra Isaac.
La canción principalmente promulgará estos sentimientos de pérdida y de tragedia nostálgica.
Acercándose al final todos los intrumentos paran y empieza a sonar un riff de guitarra, el cual explota con otra guitarra y la batería en los descansos, y de repente todo explota, e Isaac empieza a gritar mientras los instrumentos siguen creando esa tensión. De la nada, todo para, y solo sigue ese patrón rítmico de la guitarra y el violín, como si hubiesemos vuelto a empezar. Y a veces eso genera la nostalgia: volver a donde estábamos.
This song opens with a tragic violin, which at the same time gives me a pretty strong feeling of nostalgia, but at that moment the drums come in, and quickly the song takes a completely different direction.
The speed intensifies, it feels like a constant rush, but we quickly go back to calm and tragic violin, and that's where Isaac comes in.
The song will mainly enact these feelings of loss and nostalgic tragedy.
Nearing the end all the instruments stop and a guitar riff begins to play, which explodes with another guitar and drums in the breaks, and suddenly everything explodes, and Isaac begins to scream as the instruments continue to build that tension. Out of nowhere, everything stops, and it just follows that rhythmic pattern of the guitar and violin, as if we've started all over again. And sometimes that generates nostalgia: going back to where we were.
Este disco, por sobre todos los sentimientos que profesa, destaca la nostalgia y la ansiedad. Una combinación realmente interesante, que resulta en un gran compilado de historias, la mayoría trágicas.
Este debut me ha dejado esperando muy pacientemente por lo que sea que haga esta banda en un futuro, y entra por la puerta grande como uno de los mejores álbumes del año hasta ahora.
La ansiedad puede ser retratada en la música mediante el desastre, lo ruidoso, lo extraño, y Black Country, New Road lo hace de maravilla.
This album, above all the feelings it professes, highlights nostalgia and anxiety. A really interesting combination, resulting in a great compilation of stories, most of them tragic.
This debut has left me waiting very patiently for whatever this band does in the future, and enters through the front door as one of the best albums of the year so far.
Anxiety can be portrayed in music through the messy, the loud, the weird, and Black Country, New Road does it beautifully.
