Portadas de discos de Rock clásico [ESP -ENG]

Como parte de la herencia que dejó mi padre, muerto hace 7 años, recibí cientos de discos de acetato y otros miles de CD y MiniDisc, ya obsoletos, pero vamos! que excelente sonido, además su colección de platos y ecualizadores y otros componentes para montar una gran fiesta con un sonido magistral. También su colección de libros sobre la historia del Rock, ya que mi padre era un gran rockero y súper DJ, le puse de apodo el Gordijey, lo que le causaba mucha risa y felicidad.

Gracias a él mi vida transcurrió muy cerca de la música y de as estaciones de radio, donde trabajó un buen tiempo, mientras tenía su trabajo de periodista en medios como El Nacional o Radio Caracas Radio. Incluso fue el musicalizador de Kiss FM, por allá en los 90.

As part of the inheritance left by my father, who died 7 years ago, I received hundreds of acetate records and thousands of CDs and MiniDiscs, already obsolete, but come on! what an excellent sound, plus his collection of turntables and equalizers and other components to mount a great party with a masterful sound. Also his collection of books on the history of Rock, since my father was a great rocker and super DJ, I nicknamed him Gordijey, which caused him a lot of laughter and happiness.

Thanks to him my life was very close to music and radio stations, where he worked for a long time, while he had his job as a journalist in media such as El Nacional or Radio Caracas Radio. He was even the musicalizer of Kiss FM, back in the 90s.

Regresando a uno de los libros que, ahora, tengo como propiedad y valor doble, está este fantástico libro de Taschen, ya saben esa editorial alemana que se dedica a publicar elegantes libros de arte, diseño y arquitectura, y aunque este libro en particular es de música, la verdad hace referencia a la portadas de los discos, que para un coleccionista, como lo era mi padre, viene siendo como un álbum de barajitas que tiene que ir completando.

No conozco mucho sobre la historia del rock, más allá de las enseñanzas de mi padre y de ver y escuchar su colección. Por lo que vengo a comentar algunas curiosidades, tendencias y otras tribulaciones del aspecto gráfico de los discos, un arte que parece desaparecer y que es tan importante como la música de la que trata de crear una impronta, una identidad.

El libro abarca desde los años 50's hasta los 90's, y en muy interesante, sobre todo por el tipo censura de las diferentes épocas, también las tendencias, y sobre todo por las libertades que fueron tomando, ya que muchas veces hay portadas que hoy serían canceladas por movimiento #MeToo alrededor del mundo.

Returning to one of the books that I now have as property and double value, there is this fantastic book by Taschen, you know that German publisher dedicated to publishing elegant books on art, design and architecture, and although this particular book is about music, the truth is that it refers to album covers, which for a collector, as my father was, is like an album of playing cards that has to be completed.

I don't know much about the history of rock music, beyond my father's teachings and from watching and listening to his collection. So I come to comment on some curiosities, trends and other tribulations of the graphic aspect of the records, an art that seems to disappear and that is as important as the music that tries to create an imprint, an identity.

The book covers from the 50's to the 90's, and is very interesting, especially for the type of censorship of the different eras, also the trends, and especially for the liberties that were taken, as many times there are covers that today would be canceled by #MeToo movement around the world.

En estas portadas también se exponen el lugar que se le otorgaba a las personas en ciertas épocas. Y como la visión sobre algunos grupos ha ido mejorando, desarrollándose o empeorando, veamos. El libro está escrito en inglés y alemán, por los que no entendí casi nada de la literatura que ofrece, su autor es Michael Ochs, quien también parece coleccionista, lo siento no googleé información sobre él, y la que ofrece el libro está en una lengua que no manejo.

En los apartados por épocas, ofrece un descripción de las épocas y los datos más resaltantes. Todo comienza con la época de oro, el Rock zanahoria, como le decía mi padre, las portadas son pasteles y muy inocentes, con bloques de color sólido y un diseño de cartón piedra. Letras recortadas al más puro estilo de LetraSet, ese juego de tipografías que para pegarlas había que marcar sobre ellas con una herramienta punzante, para transferir cada letra sobre una superficie plana. Hermoso. Estos recortes formaron el piano a continuación.

The book is written in English and German, so I did not understand almost nothing of the literature it offers, its author is Michael Ochs, who also seems to be a collector, sorry I did not google information about him, and what the book offers is in a language I do not handle.

In the sections by epochs, he offers a description of the epochs and the most outstanding data. It all starts with the golden era, Carrot Rock, as my father used to call it, the covers are pastel and very innocent, with blocks of solid color and a papier-mâché design. Letters cut out in the purest LetraSet style, that set of typefaces that to paste them you had to mark on them with a punching tool, to transfer each letter on a flat surface. Beautiful. These cut-outs formed the piano below.

En los 50's el diseño de las portadas se caracterizaba por tener grandes bloques de color, letras en contraste y alguna fotografía, o una imagen que serviría de fondo, a medida que las técnicas de diseño mejoraban la música se volvía cada vez más fuerte también, los músicos exploraban nuevas maneras de expresarse para crear una identidad propia e insurgente.

In the 50's cover design was characterized by large blocks of color, contrasting lettering and a photograph, or an image that would serve as a background. As design techniques improved and music became stronger, musicians explored new ways of expressing themselves to create an insurgent identity of their own.

Poco a poco se fue quedando atrás la hegemonía y la uniformidad de las portadas de los discos, y varios artistas gráficos hicieron volar la imaginación para presentar discos más subjetivos y surrealistas, con un mayor peso artístico. La música y el arte avanzaban de la mano. Algunos con humor, otros con transgresión.

Little by little, the hegemony and uniformity of album covers was being left behind, and several graphic artists let their imagination fly to present more subjective and surreal albums, with a greater artistic weight. Music and art went hand in hand. Some with humor, others with transgression.

Para ambientar la casa, los domingos, días en los que además cocinaba, elegía siempre un estilo musical para pasar todo el día en casa descansando. Así, un día era con discos de los 50's, otro día música de los 60's y así iba variando. Otras veces las canciones de los discos del libro de los 50's, pero sus covers en español.

Los artistas decidieron que el papel recortado ya no podía ser más, el motivo de los diseños, y buscaron maneras más artísticas. como ese cuadro al óleo de Bob Dylan o simplemente fotografías, que ocuparan todo el formato y que la composición partiera a partir de allí. The artists decided that the cut-out paper could no longer be the motif of the designs, and looked for more artistic ways, such as that oil painting of Bob Dylan or simply photographs, which would occupy the entire format and that the composition would start from there. También hicieron uso de las obras clásicas, como la obra renacentista de Botticelli: El nacimiento de Venus, que tantas cosas maravillosas ha inspirado. Con marcadas identidades que hasta han desatado teorías de conspiración.

They also made use of classical works, such as Botticelli's Renaissance work The Birth of Venus, which has inspired so many wonderful things. When the digital era arrived, things began to heat up and designs began to be perfected. Transgressive music had arrived, with more violence than ingenuity. Viendo como ha cambiado el lugar de las mujeres en estos últimos años podemos notar como ha avanzado la sociedad. Quiero compartir el negativo que encontré dentro del libro, es mi padre (de lentes) con su elegante traje en compañía de algunos políticos de la época (Rafael Caldera), quien se imaginaría que ese señor bonachón rockeaba y tocaba la guitarra eléctrica invisible.

Seeing how the place of women has changed in these last years we can notice how society has advanced. I want to share the negative I found inside the book, it is my father (with glasses) with his elegant suit in the company of some politicians of the time(Rafael Caldera), who would imagine that this nice man rocked and played the invisible electric guitar.
