We are coming to the end of Gaga's studio albums and their respective reviews. Today, in this Deep Dive, I'm pleased to share with you one more music review of the great star Lady Gaga's albums. We are going to her album Joanne, which marked a before and after in Gaga's career. Without further ado, let's see what the musical legend's fifth studio album is like.
There was a big shock when 2016 rolled around and Lady Gaga would do what was not expected of her, she brought us a "less Gaga" era, without so many extravagances, avant-garde outfits and strange fashion. Gaga offered us a new vision of her music, focusing more on ballads, fresh sounds and much more personal lyrics. It was very well accepted by the public, although everyone was surprised to see this totally new side of the artist, especially starting after four albums full of more daring art.
It's not surprising that Gaga took this direction, because if we look at how Joanne's predecessor, ARTPOP, was and all the emotional mess that went into it, taking this approach to her career feels fresher and less problematic. The inspiration behind the album's title is because she dedicated it to a beloved aunt who died long ago and whose loss weighed heavily on the family. The sound of the album has a pop approach closer to soft rock, or genres like country, so it's something quite interesting to see. Now it's time for us to delve a bit into what the singles from this album were and what served to promote an era that remains one of Gaga's most personal and fan-favorite, let's hear a bit of Lady Gaga's Joanne.
Tryin' to get control
Pressure's takin' its toll.
This is when, for the first time, we see a much more relaxed Gaga, without all the extravagance following her, as she was known, with sexy shorts and beautiful tops, Gaga shows us a song that at first glance speaks of a failed romance, of a perfect illusion. The truth goes beyond that, as it talks about the false personalities that today's society shows through social networks, with the simple purpose of feeling to be someone bigger, more impressive, and we end up getting lost in that illusion that does not allow us to interact with other people in a more authentic way.
It was strange to hear Gaga anchored to less pop sounds, much more raw, more rock but with the pop tinges that only she could add to it. I found it to be one of the strongest songs on the album, though a bad decision to take this as the lead single to promote the era, as overall the fans didn't love it. However, I think it has been getting better with time, although for the general public it has passed without any glory. It is one of the least listened to of the album, however, every time I listen to it I feel the ecstasy of the first time I heard it between screams. It is important to mention how psychedelic the video is and how incredibly cool that it was the beginning of a trilogy of videos that would tell a story.

You're giving me a million reasons to quit the show.
The second single of the era and probably the only hit to come out of this era, it is a beautiful ballad with country and pop overtones. Million Reasons served to remind the whole world of the incredible vocal talent that Ms. Gaga possesses and that, not only that, but she is a master at producing and writing. The song, like Perfect Illusion, seems to talk about a relationship that only gives you reasons to give up, but at the end of the day you just need a good reason to stay. Many say that it's actually a message for the stage, for her life as a famous singer, which gives her a thousand reasons to leave, but that she decides to stay for a good reason.
To see Gaga write so beautifully, sing so soulfully and present us with a tremendous musical gem, and not only that, but to make it popular, is a milestone in her career. Back in the promotional days of the Joanne era, Gaga was in charge of doing the Super Bowl halftime show, and although everyone expected her to do a million outlandish things, Gaga gambled on promoting Million Reasons on a piano as she was nearing the end of her show... and she blew the world away, but for the better. People began to see Gaga as a complete artist and not just someone who fervently wanted to attract attention with extravagant outfits. Million Reasons is a great single and one that will ultimately go down as one of the smartest decisions of her career.

First unofficial single, but it served to promote the era. Listening to A-YO was supremely weird, it's euphoric, accelerated and country, a rather bizarre mix but I loved it from the first moment. Supposedly, according to Gaga, the song is about leaving her haters with their mouths shut, something I find extremely curious, since at the time of its release, she did a bit of a shade to The Chainsmokers, who had criticized the era's lead single, Perfect Illusion, a moment that left these haters' mouths shut. According to some, the song is actually about having sex in a car.
The song is good, it's easy to listen to and it's fun, it doesn't bring anything beyond that, just enough to listen to in a moment of drunken euphoria at 2:00 AM on the way home. It shows us the faster, more country side of the album and honestly, it would have been fascinating to see a video of the song, to get inside the singer's mind on this song.
Take my hand, stay Joanne
Heaven's not ready for you.
The title-track and last official single of the era, Joanne, and, in Gaga's words, the heart and soul of the album. Joanne is perhaps one of the most personal songs on the entire album, one of the saddest ballads (especially the piano version, which is much sadder). Joanne has always been an inspirational figure for Gaga throughout her career, which is why she wanted to honor and pay tribute to her aunt, who died at a young age. Joanne was an artist and writer, and Gaga wanted to continue her work through her vision.
The song has the album version, which is accompanied by a rather country guitar sound, and on the other hand, the piano version, which is much more raw and slower, functioning as a ballad dedicated to her aunt. It's not one of my favorites, but every now and then I find myself looking for it to give it a listen and let out a few tears.

Joanne is a strange album, it almost feels like something never seen before, but nonetheless, it doesn't impress me. Gaga has shown with this album how chameleon-like she can be and the mark she can leave on culture. She can go from making music dressed as an octopus easily to making an album that will make you want to walk barefoot at sunset through a meadow. She is THAT artist, THAT performer and she will continue to be and prove it album after album, for with this record she proves to us that we will never fully know her. Simply the most complete artist, chameleon-like and a living legend of music.
Now, the album itself is not one of my favorites, because musically I couldn't connect with it. It does have gems like Come To Mama, which is an anthem of support for different communities and a social critique. We also have Angel Down, another of the great social criticisms of the album and musically very beautiful, a remix with Lana Del Rey would have been great. Another song to mention is Dancin' in Circles, which deserved to be an official single with video and everything, being the favorite of many fans.

It's not my favorite album, but it's a very good and enjoyable one, which shows us the versatility of the artist and shows us, once again, the vocal talent of Gaga, whose art seems to have no limits. Estamos llegando al final de los álbumes de estudio de Gaga y sus respectivas reseñas. Hoy, en este Deep Dive, me complace compartir con ustedes una reseña musical más de los álbumes de la gran estrella Lady Gaga. Nos vamos a su álbum Joanne, que marcó un antes y un después en la carrera de Gaga. Sin más preámbulos, veamos que tal es el quinto álbum de estudio de la leyenda musical.
Hubo un gran impacto cuando corría el 2016 y Lady Gaga haría lo que no se esperaba de ella, nos trajo una era “menos Gaga”, sin tantas extravagancias, trajes a la vanguardia y moda extraña. Gaga nos ofreció una nueva visión de su música, enfocándose más en baladas, en sonidos frescos y letras mucho más personales. Fue muy bien aceptado por el público, aunque todos se extrañaron de ver esta faceta totalmente nueva en la artista, en especial empezando luego de cuatro álbumes llenos de arte un poco más atrevido.
No es de extrañar que Gaga tomara este rumbo, pues si vemos como fue el predecesor de Joanne, ARTPOP, y todo el desastre emocional que hubo en ella, darle este enfoque a su carrera se siente más fresco y menos problemático. La inspiración tras el título del álbum es porque ella lo dedicó a una querida tía que murió mucho tiempo atrás y cuya pérdida tuvo gran peso en la familia. El sonido del álbum tiene un enfoque pop más cercano al soft rock, o géneros como country, así que es algo bastante interesante de ver. Ahora es momento de que nos adentremos un poco en lo que fueron los sencillos de este álbum y que sirvieron para promocionar una época que permanece como una de las más personales de Gaga y favorita de los fans, vamos a escuchar un poco de Joanne de Lady Gaga.
Tratando de ganar control
La presión está tomando su peaje.
Aquí es cuando, por primera vez, vemos a una Gaga mucho más relajada, sin toda la extravagancia siguiéndola, como era conocida, con shorts sexys y hermosos tops, Gaga nos muestra una canción que a simple vista habla de un romance fallido, de una perfecta ilusión. La verdad va más allá de eso, pues habla de las falsas personalidades que la sociedad actual muestra a través de redes sociales, con el simple fin de sentir ser alguien más grande, más impresionante, y terminamos perdiéndonos en esa ilusión que no nos permite interactuar con las otras personas de una forma más auténtica.
Fue extraño escuchar a Gaga anclada a sonidos menos pop, mucho más crudos, más rockeros pero con los tintes pop que solo ella podría añadirle. Me parece que es una de las canciones más fuertes del álbum, aunque una mala decisión tomar esta como sencillo líder para promocionar la era, pues en general a la fanaticada no le encantó. Sin embargo, creo que ha ido mejorando con el tiempo, aunque para el público en general haya pasado sin pena ni gloria. Es una de las que menos escucho del álbum, sin embargo, cada vez que la escucho siento el éxtasis de la primera vez que la oí entre gritos. Importante mencionar lo psicodélico del video y lo increíblemente genial que se haya tratado del inicio de una trilogía de vídeos que contarían una historia.

El segundo sencillo de la era y probablemente el único éxito que desprendió esta era, se trata de una hermosa balada con tintes de country y pop. Million Reasons sirvió para recordarle al mundo entero el increíble talento vocal que posee la señorita Gaga y que, no solo eso, sino que es una maestra a la hora de producir y escribir. LA canción, al igual que Perfect Illusion, parece hablar de una relación la cual solo te da razones para renunciar a ella, pero que al final del día solo necesitas una buena razón para quedarte. Muchos dicen que en realidad se trata de un mensaje para el escenario, para su vida como cantante famosa, la cual le da mil razones para irse, pero que ella decide quedarse por una buena razón.
Ver a Gaga escribir de una forma tan hermosa, cantar con tanto sentimiento y presentarnos una tremenda joya musical, y no solo eso, sino hacerla popular, es un hito en su carrera. En los tiempos de promoción de la era Joanne, Gaga fue la encargada de hacer el medio tiempo del Super Bowl, y aunque todos esperaban que hiciera un millón de cosas estrambóticas, Gaga apostó por promocionar Million Reasons en un piano cuando ya se acercaba el final de su show… y dejó al mundo boquiabierto, pero para bien. Las personas empezaron a ver a Gaga como una artista completa y no solo alguien quien deseaba fervientemente llamar la atención con outfits extravagantes. Million Reasons es un gran sencillo y uno que en definitiva quedará como una de las decisiones más inteligentes de su carrera.

Primer sencillo no oficial, pero que sirvió para promocionar la era. Escuchar A-YO fue supremamente raro, es eufórica, acelerada y country, una mezcla bastante bizarra pero que me encantó desde el primer momento. Se supone que, según Gaga, la canción habla de dejar a los haters de ella con la boca callada, algo que me parece sumamente curioso, pues al momento de estrenarla, hizo un poco de shade a The Chainsmokers, quienes habían criticado el sencillo líder de la era, Perfect Illusion, todo un momento que dejó cerrada la boca de estos haters. Según algunos, la canción en realidad trata de tener sexo en un carro.
La canción es buena, es fácil de escuchar y es divertida, no aporta algo más allá de eso, solo como para escucharla en un momento de euforia borracha a las 2:00 AM camino a tu casa. Nos muestra el lado más rápido y country del álbum y, honestamente, hubiese sido fascinante ver un vídeo de la canción, que nos sirviera para adentrarnos en la mente de la cantante en esta canción.
Toma mi mano, quédate Joanne
El cielo no está listo para ti.
El title-track y último sencillo oficial de la era, Joanne, y, en palabras de Gaga, el corazón y alma del álbum. Joanne es, quizá, una de las canciones más personales de todo el álbum, de las baladas más tristes (en especial la versión piano, la cual es mucho más triste). Joanne siempre ha sido una figura que inspiró a Gaga durante toda su carrera, es por esa razón que ella quiso rendirle honor y tributo a su tía, quien murió siendo joven. Joanne era artista y escritora, y Gaga quiso continuar su trabajo a través de su visión.
La canción tiene la versión del álbum, que está acompañada por un sonido de guitarra bastante country, y por otro lado, la versión de piano, que es mucho más cruda y lenta, funcionando como una balada dedicada a su tía. No es de mis favoritas, pero cada tanto me hallo buscándola para darle una escuchada y dejar escapar algunas lágrimas.

Joanne es un álbum extraño, casi se siente como algo nunca antes visto, pero, sin embargo, no me impresiona. Gaga ha demostrado con este álbum lo camaleónica que puede ser y la huella que puede dejar en la cultura. Puede pasar de hacer música vestida de pulpo fácilmente a hacer un álbum que te hará querer caminar descalzo al atardecer por una pradera. Ella es ESA artista, ESA performer y lo seguirá siendo y demostrando álbum tras álbum, pues con este record nos demuestra que nunca lograremos conocerla del todo. Simplemente la artista más completa, camaleónica y una leyenda viva de la música.
Ahora, en sí, el álbum no es de mis favoritos, pues musicalmente no logré conectar con él. Si bien tiene joyas como Come To Mama, que es un himno de apoyo para distintas comunidades y una crítica social. También tenemos Angel Down, otra de las grandes críticas sociales del álbum y una musicalmente muy hermosa, un remix con Lana Del Rey hubiese sido genial. Otra de las canciones que hay que mencionar es Dancin’ in Circles, que merecía ser sencillo oficial con vídeo y todo, siendo la favorita de muchos fans.
