I finally got to one of the greatest musical works that exists in my heart. Following the Deep Dive of the iconic discography of the queen of entertainment, Lady Gaga, we have arrived at her fourth studio album, the most controversial of her entire career and the one that bonded me to her. We will go, through a new format of my reviews, through the album of the millennium, a gem that we could categorize as Lady Gaga's most experimental album and one that remains a fan favorite.
There is simply no era that I have enjoyed more than Lady Gaga's ARTPOP. An era and an album that was tainted by many controversies, but nevertheless has excellent musical content and marked pop culture, in its own way. For me ARTPOP is extremely important as it was the Lady Gaga album with which I became a real fan and with which I felt the love for the whole career, concept and art that was (still is) Lady Gaga. I went to the point of recently getting the same tattoo she has on her left arm that she did to announce the album, for me it's such a beautiful connection to my favorite singer, to the human being who has saved my life multiple times through her messages and her music.
There is so much that could be said about the controversial album, starting with that it has been, throughout history, one of the most discussed albums and one that has garnered the most reviews, mostly mixed ones that labeled it as good, but did not fill the shoes of its predecessors. A celebration of life and art, a union of pop with artistic concepts that made music revolutionary. With heavy electronic inspiration, once again Ms. Gaga was in charge of producing and writing the album, with help from multiple producers and DJs who brought the ambitious project to life. With that said, reach for your headphones and turn it up to the max, because you are about to live a wonderful sonic experience with "ARTPOP" by Lady Gaga.
I stand here waiting for you to bang the gong
To crash the critic saying, "Is it right or is it wrong?".
The beginning of a huge era, the lead single from ARTPOP. It's the sound of glory, it's the perfect blend of electronic sounds with absolute irreverence. According to the song, it's about the artist's life and how she depends on the public's applause in order to live. For Gaga, after her traumatic hip accident, her greatest source of inspiration was the applause of her audience, the love of her fans helped her to overcome one of the darkest stages of her career. It is through this inspiration that Applause was born, and while it didn't have the same massive success of the previous lead singles (Bad Romance and Born This Way), it is an excellent and enjoyable Electro-Pop song.
It is inevitable to talk about Applause without mentioning the media war that existed at the time between Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, who released their singles for the same dates and started a rivalry (which thank God no longer exists). Applause was a pop culture moment, both for its performances, its music video and its exquisite production. For me, a very good lead single.

But then I trip over myself and I fall.
The second single to be released, which to date has been one of the most controversial moments in the singer's career. Starting with who originally collaborated on this song, R. Kelly. A terrible man whose actions affected the future of this song. But not only the main collaborator, but many other controversies would affect this waste of a song. Gaga was accused of making reference to inciting sexual abuse, as well as having collaborated with an abuser and producing the promotional video with a very controversial producer.
But, thank God there is a version with Christina Aguilera and that, in my opinion, is much better than the original. Now, let's talk a little more about the song. With a clear R&B influence, it talks about the criticism from the press, about being sexually explicit and being able to be sexually explicit as a fulfilled woman. Forgetting all the controversy that existed at the time, the song was a big hit and gave us a good time on the dancefloor. Currently, all versions of the song were removed from digital platforms, except for the version with Christina. Lady Gaga apologized for this song and the insensitivity of herself as a young woman.
Rocket #9 take off to the planet (to the planet)
Venus.
As the third promotional single, Venus became an immediate fan favorite. We all agreed that Venus deserved much more promotion, because it is a masterful pop song and, perhaps, one of the closest to art and pop. The song takes us to sexual places (theme we noticed recurring in the album), but empowering women, doing it from a feminist and sexual focused point of view. The production is a bit weirder and less radio-friendly than the previous singles, but it didn't stop it from becoming a favorite of the Little Monsters, who still want a video for a magnificent work of art.
I must admit it's one of my favorite songs on the album and, thanks to it, I learned the names of the planets, with lines like "Uranus, don't you know my ass is famous?". There are many performances where Gaga lets us see how talented and versatile her vocal power is, being this the album where she steps out of the "Pop" box and experiments with her voice. Thanks to this song is born one of Gaga's alter-ego for this era, known as "Aphrodite" in honor of the Goddess of love and beauty, and we also note that it will not be the only reference to Greek mythology during the album. A magnificent song that certainly deserved a better ending.

The party's just begun.
Serving as a promotional single for the era, Dope was presented for the first time at a festival, in its demo version, and fans were shocked. The first and only ballad of the album full of extreme and chaotic sounds. It is where we can best appreciate the immense vocal talent of the performer. The first time I heard Dope, I cried. I cried without understanding the lyrics, just because of the incredible feeling in Gaga's voice and the piano that accompanies you through this painful song.
Dope serves Gaga as a letter of apology, because according to herself, she was addicted to marijuana in order to numb her body and mind, which made her completely dependent and led her to a state she didn't like, she was lost, not being present, numb all the time. Eventually she realized that she couldn't go on like that, especially because no one could talk to her anymore because of how numb she was all the time. Gaga decides to create this song as an apology to her partner, her friends, her family and her fans. It must be the heaviest and most emotionally charged song in Gaga's entire career and to listen to it is to cry, yes or yes, so I highly recommend it, it is a work of art from start to finish.
I wanna be the girl under you (oh, yeah)
I wanna be your G.U.Y., oh, yeah.
Greetings, Himeros, God of sexual desire is certainly an unforgettable start to a song. G.U.Y., which stands for "Girl Under You" is one of the most sexual and explicit songs on the album. It served as the final single of the era and gave us one of the best produced videos of Lady Gaga's entire career. In the video we can see Jesus of Nazareth, Michael Jackson and other famous figures, it has an enrapturing choreography and a perfect rhythm for the dance floor. But the greatness of the video doesn't end there, because she herself sponsored the whole video being that she had just left her label due to lack of support.
One of the best of the album, a perfect single to close the era and give us art. The production is simply exquisite, full of so many levels and so much to discover that I could spend hours and hours talking about every little element, hidden message and, in general, the majesty of this last single of the incredible ARTPOP era.

While Gaga's ARTPOP may not have been the best received era, it is one that undoubtedly marked a before and after in Lady Gaga's career for better or worse. And while my personal reviewer evaluates this as an excellent album, I am not completely blinded to ignore the fact that it is perhaps one of the singer's worst-received albums and one that she herself constantly ignores. ARTPOP is not for everyone, but over the years, the general public has learned to love it, and that seems to me to be a priceless gift to Gaga.
With deeply sexual, feminist lyrics and plenty of drugs and addiction in the background, ARTPOP went down in history as an album that deserved so much more than it got. For me, the songs that stand out are: Dope, G.U.Y., Mary Jane Holland, of course Venus and a hidden gem: Gypsy. I categorize as "bad" only Jewels N' Drugs and MANiCURE, only because they are songs that leave you wanting more and are songs often ignored by fans of the performer.

I am aware that it is not Gaga's best album, but thanks to it I am here, sharing with you, living a beautiful life thanks to a wonderful singer who has delivered art after art and with an empowering voice, has made it possible for many people to find a place and still stand. And, if you're wondering "What does ARTPOP mean?", well, in the words of the singer, "ARTPOP could mean anything" and, for me, it's love, art, pop and sex. Finalmente llegué a una de las obras musicales más grandes que existe en mi corazón. Siguiendo con el Deep Dive de la icónica discografía de la reina del entretenimiento, Lady Gaga, hemos llegado a su cuarto álbum de estudio, el más controversial de toda su carrera y el que me unió a ella. Pasaremos, a través de un nuevo formato de mis críticas, por el álbum del milenio, una joya que podríamos catalogar como el álbum más experimental de Lady Gaga y uno que sigue siendo de los favoritos por los fans.
Simplemente no existe una era que haya disfrutado más que ARTPOP de Lady Gaga. Una era y un álbum que se vieron manchados por muchas controversias, pero que, sin embargo, tiene un excelente contenido musical y que marcó la cultura pop, a su propia manera. Para mí ARTPOP es sumamente importante pues fue el álbum de Lady Gaga con el que me volví un real fan y con el que sentí el enamoramiento por toda la carrera, el concepto y el arte que era (sigue siendo) Lady Gaga. Llegué al punto de recientemente tatuarme el mismo tatuaje que tiene ella en su brazo izquierdo que hizo para anunciar el álbum, para mí es una conexión muy bonita con mi cantante favorita, con el ser humano que ha salvado múltiples veces mi vida a través de sus mensajes y su música.
Hay tanto que se podría decir acerca del controvertido álbum, iniciando con que ha sido, a través de la historia, uno de los álbumes más discutidos y que más ha acumulado críticas, en su mayoría mixtas que lo catalogan como bueno, pero no llenó los zapatos de sus predecesores. Una celebración de la vida y el arte, una unión del pop con conceptos artísticos que hicieron que la música revolucionara. Con gran inspiración electrónica, una vez más la señorita Gaga se encargó de producir y escribir el álbum, con ayuda de múltiples productores y DJs que dieron vida al ambicioso proyecto. Dicho esto, busca tus audífonos y súbele al máximo, porque estás a punto de vivir una maravillosa experiencia sónica con “ARTPOP” de Lady Gaga.

El inicio de una enorme era, el sencillo líder de ARTPOP. Es el sonido de la gloria, es la mezcla perfecta de sonidos electrónicos con una irreverencia absoluta. De acuerdo a la canción, se trata de la vida del artista y como depende de los aplausos del público para poder vivir. Para Gaga, luego de su traumático accidente de caderas, su mayor fuente de inspiración fueron los aplausos de su público, el amor de sus fans la ayudó a superar una de las etapas más oscuras de su carrera. Es por medio de esta inspiración que nace Applause, y si bien no tuvo el mismo éxito masivo de los sencillos líderes anteriores (Bad Romance y Born This Way), es una excelente canción Electro-Pop disfrutable.
Es inevitable hablar de Applause sin mencionar la guerra mediática que existió en ese entonces entre Lady Gaga y Katy Perry, quienes estrenaron sus sencillos para las mismas fechas y empezó una rivalidad (que gracias a Dios ya no existe). Applause fue todo un momento en la cultura pop, tanto por sus presentaciones, su vídeo musical y su exquisita producción. Para mí, un muy buen sencillo líder.

Pero entonces me tropo sobre mí mismo y me caigo .
El segundo sencillo a estrenarse, que a la fecha ha sido uno de los momentos más controversiales en la carrera de la cantante. Empezando por quien originalmente colaboró en esta canción, R. Kelly. Un hombre terrible cuyas acciones afectaron el futuro de esta canción. Pero no solo el colaborador principal, sino que muchas otras controversias afectarían a este desperdicio de canción. Gaga fue acusada de hacer referencia a incitar al abuso sexual, además de haber colaborado con un abusador y producir el vídeo promocional con un muy controvertido productor.
Pero, gracias a Dios existe una versión con Christina Aguilera y que, en mi opinión, es mucho mejor que la original. Ahora, mejor hablemos un poco más de la canción. Con clara influencia del R&B, habla de las críticas de la prensa, de ser sexualmente explícita y poder serlo ya como una mujer realizada. Obviando toda la controversia que existió en su momento, la canción fue un gran éxito y nos dio un buen momento en la pista. En la actualidad, todas las versiones de la canción fueron eliminadas de plataformas digitales, a excepción de la versión con Christina. Lady Gaga pidió disculpas por esta canción y la insensibilidad de ella misma como joven.
El cohete número 9 despega hacia el planeta
Venus.
Siendo tercer sencillo promocional, Venus se convirtió en la favorita de los fans de inmediato. Todos estuvimos de acuerdo que Venus merecía mucha más promoción, porque es una canción pop magistral y, quizá, una de las que más se acerca al arte y el pop. La canción nos lleva a lugares sexuales (tema que notamos recurrente en el álbum), pero empoderando a la mujer, haciéndolo desde un punto de vista enfocado en el feminismo y lo sexual. La producción es un poco más extraña y menos radio-friendly que los anteriores sencillos, pero no evitó que la misma se hiciera favorita de los Little Monsters, quienes aún desean un vídeo para una magnífica obra de arte.
Debo admitir que es una de mis canciones favoritas del álbum y, gracias a ella aprendí los nombres de los planetas, con líneas cómo: “Urano, ¿No sabes que mi culo es famoso?”. Hay muchas presentaciones donde Gaga nos deja ver lo talentoso y versátil de su poder vocal, siendo este el álbum donde sale de la caja “Pop” y experimenta con su voz. Gracias a esta canción nace uno de los alter-ego de Gaga para esta era, conocida como “Afrodita” en honor a la Diosa del amor y la belleza, y también notamos que no será la única referencia a la mitología griega durante el álbum. Una magnifica canción que sin duda merecía un final mejor.
Corchos fuera, está encendido
La fiesta acaba de empezar.
Sirviendo como sencillo promocional para la era, Dope fue presentada por primera vez en un festival, en su versión demo, y los fans quedaron en shock. La primera y única balada del álbum lleno de sonidos extremos y caóticos. Es donde podemos apreciar mejor el inmenso talento vocal de la intérprete. La primera vez que escuché Dope, lloré. Lloré sin entender la letra, solo por el increíble sentimiento en la voz de Gaga y en el piano que te acompaña por esta dolorosa canción.
Dope le sirve a Gaga como carta de disculpas, pues de acuerdo a ella misma, estuvo adicta a la marihuana para poder adormecer su cuerpo y su mente, lo que la volvió completamente dependiente y la llevó a un estado que no le gustó, estaba perdida, sin estar presente, adormecida todo el tiempo. Con el tiempo se dio cuenta que no podía seguir así, sobre todo porque ya nadie podía hablar con ella de lo adormecida que estaba todo el tiempo. Gaga decide crear esta canción como una disculpa para su pareja, sus amigos, su familia y para sus fans. Debe ser la canción más pesada y cargada de sentimientos en toda la carrera de Gaga y escucharla es llorar, sí o sí, así que se las recomiendo al máximo, es una obra de arte de inicio a fin.

Saludos, Himeros, Dios del deseo sexual es sin duda un inicio inolvidable para una canción. G.U.Y. cuyas siglas se refieren a “Chica Debajo de Ti” en español, es una de las canciones más sexuales y explícitas del álbum. Sirvió como sencillo final de la era y nos regaló uno de los videos con mejor producción de toda la carrera de Lady Gaga. En el vídeo podemos ver a Jesús de Nazaret, Michael Jackson y otras figuras celebres, tiene una coreografía enviciante y un ritmo perfecto para la pista de baile. Pero la grandiosidad del video no termina allí, porque ella misma patrocinó todo el vídeo siendo que acababa de abandonar su disquera por falta de apoyo.
De las mejores del álbum, un perfecto sencillo para cerrar la era y regalarnos arte. La producción es sencillamente exquisita, llena de tantos niveles y tanto por descocer que podría pasar horas y horas hablando de cada pequeño elemento, mensaje oculto y, en general, de la majestuosidad de este último sencillo de la increíble era ARTPOP.

Si bien ARTPOP de Gaga no fue la era mejor recibida, es una que indudablemente marcó un antes y un después en la carrera de Lady Gaga para bien o para mal. Y aunque mi crítica personal evalúe a este como un excelente álbum, no estoy completamente cegado para ignorar el hecho de que quizá sea uno de los álbumes de la cantante que peor recibimiento tuvo y que, ella misma ignora constantemente. ARTPOP no es para todo el mundo, pero con el pasar de los años, el público en general ha aprendido a amarlo, y eso me parece un regalo invaluable para Gaga.
Con letras profundamente sexuales, feministas y con muchas drogas y adicción de trasfondo, ARTPOP pasó a la historia como un álbum que merecía mucho más de lo que tuvo. Para mí, las canciones que resaltan son: Dope, G.U.Y., Mary Jane Holland, por supuesto Venus y una joya oculta: Gypsy. Catagaloría como “malas” solo a Jewels N’ Drugs y MANiCURE, solo porque son canciones que te dejan con ganas de más y son canciones a menudo ignoradas por los fanáticos de la intérprete.

Estoy consciente que no es el mejor álbum de Gaga, pero gracias a él estoy aquí, compartiendo con ustedes, viviendo una hermosa vida gracias a una maravillosa cantante que ha entregado arte tras arte y que con una empoderadora voz, ha hecho posible que muchas personas encuentren un lugar y sigan de pie. Y, si te preguntas “¿Qué significa ARTPOP?”, pues, en palabras de la cantante, “ARTPOP puede significar cualquier cosa” y, para mí, es amor, arte, pop y sexo.
