How Led Varela in the Ávila

Hello friends of Hive, today I want to bring you a special article dedicated to an adventure I had in one of the most beautiful but at the same time one of the most rugged places I have ever visited in my life. It is about my visit to Cumaca, a sector that belongs to the San Esteban Park, surrounded by mountains and rivers. In general, it is a place to climb mountains. So with that said, let's start with the story!

Cómo Led Varela en el Ávila

Hola amigos de Hive el día de hoy les quiero traer un artículo especial dedicado a una aventura que tuve en uno de los lugares más hermosos pero a la vez de los más escabrosos que he visitado en mi vida. Se trata pues de mi visita a la Cumaca, un sector que pertenece al Parque San Esteban, rodeado de montañas y ríos. En general, es un lugar para escalar montañas. Por lo cual dicho esto ¡Empecemos con el relato!

Around 2018, I set out on a trip with my friend Raul Trejo (an old friend, who encouraged me to climb the mountain) and a couple of his trusted companions, to climb the well-known Cumaca. In total we were about ten people on the trip. I had previously climbed the mountain but nothing too risky, so I always stayed away. The point is that our goal was to climb up to the waterfall that is located in the place and I thought it was an easy goal to achieve.

Everything was going well until the guide or group leader decided to take a shortcut to get to the waterfall faster. That was our first mistake because we got lost and it took us a long time to find our way again and guess what, we came back to the same place where we started the trip. So already at that moment we started to feel the physical exhaustion or at least that was my perception. So we bathed for a while there to rest and followed the original path, no detour and no inventions.

Alrededor del año 2018, me dispuse a hacer un viaje con mi amigo Raúl Trejo (un viejo amigo, que me animo a subir la montaña) y un par de compañeros de su confianza, para subir la tan conocida Cumaca. En total fuimos unas diez personas de excursión. Yo había subido anteriormente la montaña pero nada demasiado arriesgado, por lo que me mantenía siempre al margen. La cuestión es que nos planteamos como meta subir hasta la Cascada que se encuentra en el lugar y pensé que era una meta fácil de conseguir.

Todo marchaba bien hasta que el guía o líder del grupo decidió tomar un atajo para llegar más rápido hasta la Cascada. Ese fue nuestro primer error porque nos perdimos y tardamos bastante en encontrar de nuevo el rumbo y adivinen, volvimos al mismo lugar donde empezamos el viaje. Por lo que ya en ese momento se empezó a sentir el desgaste físico o por lo menos esa fue mi percepción. Total que nos bañamos un rato allí para descansar y seguimos el camino original, sin desvío y sin inventos.

The road was quite long and hard because as we went up the rocks were steeper, slippery and difficult to cross. So we arrived at the big waterfall. I'm not going to lie, by that point we were all exhausted and we didn't care much or anything about its presence. Yes, the waterfall was beautiful, very impressive but we couldn't really appreciate it too much. We decided to eat, gain some energy, take a shower and head back down. At this point it was already around two o'clock and that is quite late, considering that we had climbed up around 8:00 AM and it took us a while to get up. Coming down is another thing and this is where the good stuff comes in.

As we were coming down, one of the guys was very insistent that we go to a well that was "nearby", before we left. So we went down to the well. When we got there, I noticed that most of them left their belongings and went into some sort of tunnel. It turns out that in order to see the well, you had to go through the tunnel and jump in with a rope to fall into it. I told my friend I wouldn't do it, my legs were shaking and I had no strength and something very important; I couldn't swim. So he told me it was ok but because of some impulse (of idiocy) I decided to jump since I thought I would never go back to that place. And there goes the second mistake.

El camino fue bastante largo y duro porque conforme íbamos subiendo las rocas eran más empinadas, resbalosas y difíciles de atravesar. Total que llegamos a la gran Cascada. No les voy a mentir, para ese punto todos estábamos agotados y poco o nada nos importo su presencia. Sí, la cascada era hermosa, muy impresionante pero realmente no pudimos apreciarla demasiado. Decidimos comer, ganar energía, bañarnos y bajar. A este punto ya eran alrededor de las dos y eso es bastante tarde, considerando que habíamos subido alrededor de las 8:00 AM y tardamos en subir. Bajar es otra cosa y es aquí donde viene lo bueno.

Cuando estábamos bajando, uno de los chicos insistió mucho en que fuéramos a un pozo que estaba "cerca", antes de irnos. Bajamos entonces al pozo. Cuando llegamos, observé que la mayoría dejaba sus pertenencias y se metían a una especie de túnel. Resulta que para ver el dichoso pozo tenías que atravesar ese túnel y lanzarte con una cuerda para caer dentro de él. Yo le dije a mi amigo que no lo haría, las piernas me temblaban y no tenía fuerza y algo muy importante; no sabía nadar. Total que él me dijo que estaba bien pero por algún impulso (de idiotez) decidí lanzarme dado que pensé que jamás volvería a ese lugar. Y ahí va el segundo error.

When I fell into the well, the guys helped me swim to an island. It was actually pretty deep but they didn't leave me alone. Time passed and we decided it was time to go back but, I didn't know that the only way in and out was through the blessed tunnel where I fell. It was very high and I did not have the strength to climb it, my legs could not take it anymore. The solution we took was to go down the river with a companion and that in a moment we would all meet. There goes the third mistake.

I went down with my companion, Reinaldo, whom I met on the excursion and as we went down we realized that we were not getting anywhere. The river turned into a creek and we were covered on all sides by a bunch of mountains and a thicket of trees. We got lost and in the process got trapped.

Cuando caí al pozo, los chicos me ayudaron a nadar hasta una isla. La verdad estaba bastante profundo pero no me dejaron sola. Pasó el tiempo y decidimos que era hora de volver pero, no sabía que la única entrada y salida es por el bendito túnel por dónde caí. Estaba súper alto y no tenía fuerzas para subirlo, ya las piernas no resistían más. La solución que tomamos fue que bajara junto con un compañero por el río y que en un momento a otro nos encontraríamos todos. Allí va el tercer error.

Baje con mi compañero, Reinaldo, a quién conocí en la excursión y conforme íbamos bajando nos dimos cuenta que no estábamos llegando a ningún lugar. El río se volvió un riachuelo y nos vimos cubiertos por todos lados por un montón de montañas y una espesura de árboles. Nos perdimos y de paso quedamos atrapados.

This is where I want to explain why the title "How Led Varela in the Avila", because I know that some of you are foreigners or just know him. Led Varela is a Venezuelan comedian who in 2006 got lost for three days in the Avila mountain until he was rescued. The thing is that he did a comic monologue talking about his misfortune and when I listened to it (years after my trip to the Cumaca) I felt totally identified. I thought that going down the river we would find a way out, I thought I could endure such a hard trip and I really could not enjoy the visit as I wanted because of the various inconveniences.

Retorning to the main idea, Reinaldo and I looked for alternatives to get home but, I remembered that previously between laughs and jokes we had proposed to make sounds like owls in case we got lost. I started then to call the others imitating the sound of the Owls and Reinaldo joined in. We spent about 30 minutes at that, until we heard a response and they finally found us. The guys assisted us and there we were finally able to get out of the place. I couldn't be happier to be home.

Es aquí donde quiero explicar porque el título de "Cómo Led Varela en el Ávila", pues sé que algunos son extranjeros o simplemente lo conocen. Led Varela es un comediante Venezolano quién en el año 2006 se perdió por tres días en la montaña del Ávila hasta ser rescatado. La cuestion es que hizo un monólogo cómico hablando sobre su desgracia y cuando yo lo escuché (años después de mi viaje a la Cumaca) me sentí totalmente identificada. Pensaba que bajando por el río encontraríamos una salida, pensé que podría aguantar un viaje tan fuerte y realmente no pude disfrutar como quise la visita por los varios inconvenientes.

Retomando la idea principal, Reinaldo y yo buscamos alternativas para llegar a casa pero, recordé que anteriormente entre risas y bromas habíamos planteado hacer sonidos como Búhos en caso de que nos perdiéramos. Empece entonces a llamar a los demás imitando el sonido de los Búhos y Reinaldo se unió. Pasamos unos 30 minutos en eso, hasta que escuchamos respuesta y por fin nos encontraron. Los muchachos nos asistieron y allí finalmente pudimos salir del lugar. No podía estar más feliz de llegar a casa.

I can tell you that this experience taught me many things and the first is not to go to a type of activity for which you are not prepared. Also to be forewarned against this type of incidents that can happen at almost any time and without any warning. I knew I was not going to die there but we could have had a very bad time trying to find a way out and who knows how long. Besides I learned that mountains are not my thing hahaha so my friends, I hope I made you smile with this anecdote and if you have in mind to make a trip like this, be very prepared. In the end the place was beautiful but to be able to enjoy it, I repeat, it is better to go prepared and adjust better to our measure. I send you a big hug and thank you for stopping by.

Les puedo decir que está experiencia me enseñó muchísimas cosas y la primera es a no ir a un tipo de actividad a la cual no se está preparado. También a estar prevenidos contra este tipo de incidentes que se pueden dar en casi cualquier momento y sin aviso alguno. Yo sabía que no iba a morir allí pero si que pudimos haber pasado un muy mal rato tratando de encontrar salida y quién sabe cuánto tiempo. Además aprendí que las montañas no son lo mío jajaja por lo cual amigos míos, espero haberles sacado una sonrisa con esta anécdota y pues si tienen en mente hacer un viaje como este, estén muy preparados. Al final el lugar era hermoso pero para poder disfrutar de ello, repito, es mejor ir preparados y ajustarnos mejor a nuestra medida. Les envío un fuerte abrazo y gracias por pasar por aquí.
