Nukago

Have you ever heard of an autumn delicacy called nukago? It is the fruit of the yam called jinenjo, which bears fruit around the time of the autumnal equinox. I forgot when, but I planted a vine of jinenjo (a type of Japanese yam) a long time ago, and it was wrapped around a Japanese plum tree, which bore many nukagos this time of year. Today, I harvested them and ate roasted nukago with my mother. The hot days are still continuing in Osaka, but nature seems to be showing signs of autumn little by little.

ヌカゴという秋の味覚をご存じですか？ジネンジョという山芋の実なのですが、秋の彼岸のこの時期に実をつけます。忘れたのですが、昔植えたジネンジョのつるが、ススモの木に巻き付かせていてこの時期たくさんのヌカゴをみにつけていました。今日はそれを収穫し、オカンと煎ったヌカゴを食べてみました。まだまだ暑い日が大阪では続きますが、自然は少しずつ秋の様子を見せているようです。
