kamikochi freshness: May 5 2024

may has started, yet some places in japan are still covered in snow. here we are in one of those places, we will be hiking in one of the summer destinations of japan. kamikochi!

we morning the night! or rather we started travelling at night. the location is quite far and the last time we visited we stayed overnight at a nearby city. this time though, we are heading straight from tokyo. i suggest staying overnight somewhere close, it is a lot better sleeping on a bed rather than on a moving bus.

arriving at 5 am, the chilly air greeted my warm clothes lacking skin. minutes before arriving, i have submitted to the fact that i am underdressed after seeing the unthawed snow from the bus window. the mind submitted yet the body remained unprepared to this morning chill. i added layers of clothes to what i originally planned, knowing that the temperature would become bearable as the day progressed.

as part of a national park, they place is so well maintained. a tell tail sign were the presence of wildlife. we even saw a black bear cub sprinting so close by which made me stay on alert in case the mom appears. luckily, she did not. mom animals are just scary, they would do everything to protect their young. so when we saw a monkey carrying a young one on its back, i knew it was no time to joke around.

people usually come here to enjoy the clean fresh air while doing a leisure walk along the river. we went beyond the usual trail, we were here for a hike. the intended trail route was 20 kilometers round trip for 5 hours according to our hiking app, too good to be true. i was not expecting to complete this route at all considering the lack of sleep that night, but my body was so ready for it unexpectedly. sadly, my companions weren't. we decided to head back 1 kilometer short of reaching the intended location. honestly, i was there for the hike and the fresh air while taking in whatever view there was, i do not even know what the view is at the intended goal. but some people's disposition were slowly getting worse, to pursue the goal with the possibility of disappointment would surely mean disaster. and so we headed back. i would rather head back level headed than be irritated by the possibility of irritants which i know i would never be able to tolerate. i would rather keep the experience rather stress free than be muddled by an avoidable conflict. (nonchalant yern?!?)

nevertheless, my step count were over the charts yet again.

when will our next hiking trip be? hmmm... i wonder. my hiking buddies were talking of having one more before our two day overnight trip on july. when that happens, i am pretty sure to write about it.

as always, stay safe.
AMPING KANUNAY!
