Some time ago I did a piece on the sports champions who, after retiring, decide to return to compete almost always with miserable results. The examples are endless; Ali ', Foreman, Thorpe, Borg and a thousand others. The reasons for these returns can be many, lack of an alternative life, economic problems, maintenance of a certain standard of living, lack of the spotlight, etc. In most cases these returns have, in part, tarnished the brilliance of their career, returning when the hourglass of time does not allow it is never a good investment in image. Different, very different, in my opinion the discourse regarding the athletes who continue to compete despite the fact that the passage of time has, relatively, clouded their talent. Valentino Rossi's first performances this year in MotoGP were certainly not in line with his past, so much so that an old champion like Lucchinelli has publicly expressed doubts about the continuation of Valentino's career. Retiring at the right time is the privilege of a select few. The first names that come to mind are those of Bolt, Pennetta, Zidane, Platini, Cagnotto and others. I believe that every champion has the right to choose when to stop; Maldini, Viechowod, Baresi, Totti, Costacurta, Pozzecco and others have continued up to almost 40 years, perhaps with lesser results than in the golden years but if they continued to have fun why stop? Is Buffon perhaps less World Champion now that he makes the reserve in the second Turin team? Pellegrini has won the right to her fifth Olympics in recent days, she will hardly reach the final but this puts into question what has been done up to now? Mennea has made 5 Olympics, no one remembers the last 2 but this puts into question what it was? Ibra? Of course at 40 Totti was walking, in reality he didn't even run at 30, but if he was having fun, why stop? Valentino was also accused of preventing the introduction of new talents. Huge bullshit since 3 of his team are racing in MotoGP today. As long as he has fun, he has every right to continue, perhaps going slower and earning, among other things, a lot of money.
Tempo fa faci un pezzo sui campioni dello sport che, dopo essersi ritirati, decidono tornare a gareggiare quasi sempre con esiti miserandi. Gli esempi sono infiniti; Ali', Foreman, Thorpe, Borg e mille altri. Le ragioni di questi ritorni possono essere tantissime, mancanza di una vita alternativa, problemi economici, mantenimento di un certo tenore di vita, mancanza dei riflettori ecc. Nella maggior parte dei casi questi rientri hanno, in parte, offuscato la brillantezza della loro carriera, rientrare quando la clessidra del tempo non te lo consente non e' mai un buon investimento di immagine. Diverso, molto diverso, a mio parere il discorso riguardante gli atleti che continuano a gareggiare malgrado che il passare del tempo abbia, relativamente, offuscato il loro talento. Le prime esibizioni di Valentino Rossi quest'anno in moto gp non sono sicuramente state in linea col suo passato, tanto che un vecchio campione come Lucchinelli ha manifestato pubblicamente dubbi sul proseguimento della carriera di Valentino. Ritirarsi al momento giusto e' privilegio di pochi eletti i primi nomi che mi vengono in mente sono quelli di Bolt, Pennetta, Zidane, Platini, Cagnotto ed altri. Credo che ogni campione abbia il diritto di scegliere quando smettere; Maldini, Viechowod, Baresi, Totti, Costacurta, Pozzecco ed altri hanno proseguito fino quasi a 40 anni, magari con risultati minori rispetto agli anni d'oro ma se continuavano a divertirsi perche' smettere? Buffon e' forse meno Campione del Mondo ora che fa la riserva nella seconda squadra torinese? La Pellegrini ha conquistato nei giorni scorsi il diritto alla sua quinta olimpiade, difficilmente arrivera' in finale ma questo mette in discussione quanto fatto fino ad oggi? Mennea ha fatto 5 olimpiadi, le ultime 2 non se le ricorda nessuno ma questo mette in discussione cio' che e' stato? Ibra? Certo a 40 anni Totti camminava, in realta non correva neanche a 30, ma se si divertiva perche' smettere? A Valentino e' stato pure imputato il fatto di impedire l'inserimento di nuovi talenti. Cazzata immane visto che ben 3 della sua scuderia oggi corrono in moto gp. Fino a quando si divertira', ha tutto il diritto di continuare, andando magari piu' piano e guadagnando, fra l'altro, una marea di denaro.
