While I was zapping on Netflix, looking for an interesting title, I came across a title that caught my attention "Total Fiasco: Woodstock 99, and reminded me when I was about 11 years old, when I had a Kerrang magazine, which talked about this music festival, as the worst music event in history, due to a series of events that happened during the 3 days of music at the festival, which tried to emulate the concept of the well-known and emblematic Woodstock 69. Although events under the same name of Woodstock had already been organized in 79, 89 and 94, the organizers wanted to commemorate with Woodstock 99, with the most epic event and with the intention of highlighting the history of what Woodstock 69 meant, but in the end everything turned into a disaster that perhaps could have been prevented.
How not to have as a reference the Woodstock 69 music festival, for all of us who like Rock and Roll, at some point we have appreciated musical jewels, which were captured in the posterity of our history, such as the presentation of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Grafutel Dead, Richie Havens, Jefferson Airplane, Santana and among other artists who left their mark on the history of the festival, Santana and other artists who left their indelible marks in this massive music festival, which sought to highlight the expression of peace and love through music, in contrast to the war conflicts of the time, such as the Vietnam War, where many young people made catharsis through music against the war, and the Hippie counterculture was born.
Mientras hacía zapping en Netflix, buscando algún título y interesante, me encontré con un título que me llamó la atención "Fiasco total: Woodstock 99, y me recordó cuando tenía como unos 11 años, cuando tenía una revista Kerrang, que hablaba sobre este festival de música, como el peor evento musical de la historia, debido a unas series de acontecimientos que sucedieron durante los 3 días de música en el festival, que trató de emular el concepto del conocido y emblemático Woodstock 69. Aunque ya se habían organizando en los años 79, 89 y 94, eventos bajo el mismo nombre de Woodstock, los organizadores querían conmemorar con el Woodstock 99, con el evento más épico y con intenciones de resaltar la historia de lo que significó el Woodstock 69, pero al final todo se convirtió en un desastre que quizás se pudo haber prevenido.
Como no tener de referencia el festival de música Woodstock 69, para todos quienes nos gusta el Rock and Roll, en algún momento hemos apreciado musicalmente joyas musicales, que quedaron plasmados en la posterioridad de nuestra historia, como la presentación de Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Grafutel Dead, Richie Havens,Jefferson Airplane, Santana y entre otros artistas que dejaron sus huellas imborrables en este festival de música masivo, que buscaron resaltar la expresión de la paz y amor por medio de la música, en contraste a los conflictos bélicos de la epoca, tal como fue la guerra de Vietnam, donde muchos jóvenes hacían catarsis por medio de la música en contra de la guerra, y nacería la contracultura Hippie.
But now, if we talk about Woodstock 99, it was the opposite of the concept mentioned above, and although one of the organizers of the event, was the legendary Michael Lang, the same character who was responsible for carrying out the Woodstock 69, and intended to recall the Woodstock in the biggest, but from the beginning everything was a setback that would lead to become one of the worst festivals of musicals made, And it is not necessarily because there was not a good repertoire of good musicians and bands of the time, otherwise in the ranks, came to present bands like Metallica, Rage Against The Machine, Bush, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Jewel, James Brown, The Chemical Brothers and a myriad of artists, who were representative icons of the 90s, no doubt even I would be delighted to see that amount of musicians, most of whom are of my total liking.
First of all, the location of this event was in the town of Rome - New York, exactly in an abandoned military base, where you could only see large spaces of airplane hangars and a lot of asphalt, in contrast to Woodstock 69, which was held in a large field with beautiful landscapes. This would be a negative point, because also for the dates that the event was held, there were very high heat waves, almost reaching 40 degrees. On the other hand, the festival never had a trained security personnel, because Michael Lang himself did not want any police or military force to be present, for the simple fact of being against the concept of peace and love, and for him police and military forces could be synonymous of violence. However, the event would start with total normality, and the attendance was massive, registering more than 400 thousand fans from different parts of the United States and even the world, mostly young people between 13 and 30 years old, all of them growing up in an era where the music was more aggressive as opposed to the 60's, where the music was more protest and peace, all because of the context they lived in.
Pero ahora, si hablamos del Woodstock 99, fue todo lo contrario a ese concepto mencionado anteriormente, y a pesar de que unos de los organizadores del evento, se trató del legendario Michael Lang, mismo personaje que se encargó de llevar a cabo el Woodstock 69, y tenía como intención rememorar en lo más grande el Woodstock, pero desde el principio todo fue un contratiempo que llevaría a convertirse en unos de los peores festivales de musicales realizados, y no es necesariamente porque no había un buen repertorio de buenos músicos y bandas de la época, de lo contrario en las filas, se llegó a presentar bandas como Metallica, Rage Against The Machine, Bush, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Jewel, James Brown, The Chemical Brothers y una infinidad de artistas, que eran iconos representativos de los años 90, sin duda hasta mí me fuese encantado poder ver a esa cantidad de músicos, que en su mayoría son de mi total agrado.
En primer lugar, la locación de este evento, se adjudicó en la localidad de Rome - Nueva York, exactamente en una base militar abandonado, donde sólo se veían grandes espacios de hangares de aviones y mucho asfalto, en contraste de lo que fue el Woodstock 69, que se realizó en un gran campo con hermosos paisajes. Esto sería un punto negativo, porque además por las fechas que se realizó el evento, se registraron ondas de calor muy alto, hasta casi llegar los 40 grados. Por otro lado el festival nunca contó con un personal de seguridad capacitado, debido a que el mismo Michael Lang, no quería que estuviese presente ninguna fuerza policial o militar, por el simple hecho de estar en contra el concepto de paz y amor, y para él las fuerzas policiales y militares, podían ser sinónimo de violencia. Sin embargo, el evento daría su inició con total normalidad, y la asistencia fue masiva, llegando a registrarse hasta más de 400 mil aficionados de diferentes partes de Estados Unidos e incluso del mundo, en su mayoría jóvenes que rondaban entre los 13 hasta los 30 años de edad, todos que venían creciendo en una época donde la música era más agresiva a diferencia de los 60, donde la música era más de protesta y paz, todo por el contexto que vivían.

Well, it was not entirely, because there was a bad organization and also a usurious eagerness to take advantage of the circumstances, such as the fact that people were not allowed to enter with food and water, so they had to buy everything inside the festival, but it was extremely expensive, as to have an idea a bottle of water could be worth between 4 to 10 $, and to this is added the fact that everyone had to pay the entrance for 120 $, to spend 3 days of music, but practically in the open and for much without food or water.
To all this, we can also add the expansive wave of excessive heat, and poor hygiene for the vast majority of those attending this event, you can imagine being 3 days in a place without water, food and without necessary and vital spaces for cleanliness, as well as the accumulation of garbage that was generated, it was almost like to have generated an epidemic in that place. For me all this was the trigger for the fury of many young people, who felt abandoned, even for the fact of having paid a high entrance fee, where they expected to enjoy the event.
En este punto, es importante comprender, que la música tuvo un papel importante en este festival, todo debido a que bandas como Korn, Limp Bizkit, Rage Against The Machine y Red Hot Chilli Peppers, tenían esa aura de ser más agresivo por su música y forma de expresar, y quizás fue en manera el detonante de tal desostrozo en este festival, donde se registró varios incendios, saqueos, daños de estructura, violaciones y hasta 3 muertes confirmadas según las autoridades locales, pero solo pudo haber sido la música, la detonó tal ira, que llevó a esta serie de desastres? Pues, no fue del todo, porque hubo una mala organización y también un afán usurero de aprovecharse de las circunstancias, como el hecho que no se le permitía a las personas entrar con comida y agua, por lo cual debían comprar todo dentro del festival, pero que era sumamente costoso, como para tener una idea una botella de agua podía valer entre 4 a 10 $, y a esto se le abona el hecho que todos debieron pagar la entrada por 120 $, para pasar 3 días de música, pero prácticamente en la intemperie y para mucho sin comida ni agua.
A todo esto, también se le agrega la ola expansiva de calor excesivo, y la mala higiene para la gran mayoría de los asistentes a este evento, es que se puede imaginar estar 3 días en un lugar sin agua, comida y sin espacios necesarios y vitales para el aseo, así como también el cúmulo de basura que se generaba, era casi como para haber generado una epidemia en ese lugar. Para mí todo esto fue el detonante de la furia de muchos jóvenes, que sintieron abandonados, incluso hasta por el hecho de haber pagado un alto costo por la entrada, donde se esperaban desfrutar del evento.

That is why this series is called a total fiasco, because it was the opposite of the concept of 3 days of love and peace of Woodstock 69, but it was also because the context, where the young people of the 90's, were not the same of 69, who had that ideology of being against violence and war. Besides this Woodstock 99, was the worst example of the depravity of men to abuse women, even for the simple fact of touching their breasts or any part of the body, while they were so to speak in a moment of euphoria for the moment, images that can be throughout the concert when the cameras focused on the public, and if we look on YouTube, you can see many complete presentations of the musicians, but it is as if nothing happened, while there was a pitched war, where violence was the motto of this music festival.
In short, from my point of view, the organization of this event was only intended for the organizers to make a lot of money, without worrying about having a better quality for the attendees, and moving away from the whole concept of Woodstock 69, an image that was used for marketing, besides having an interesting line-up of musicians, who managed to capture more than 400 thousand young people, who attended to have the experience of what could have been the best music festival in history.
Pero el contexto de la época, también tiene un papel fundamental. En unos años 90, donde los jóvenes crecían con muchas frustraciones y rabia por la sociedad donde venían creciendo, donde no veían las oportunidades de tener una vida digna, por esta razón muchos se identificaban con la música, esa música de los 90, que se expresaba con mucha ira y rabia, tal como se puede escuchar en algunos temas musicales de Limp Bizkit y Korn, son fieles ejemplos de toda esa rabia contenida expresada en música, y por más que sea miles y miles de personas en vivo, explotaron a escuchar estos temas musicales.
Es por eso que a esa serie se le título como un fiasco total, porque fue todo lo contrario al concepto de 3 días de amor y paz de Woodstock 69, pero también es fue porque el contexto, donde los jóvenes de los 90, no eran los mismos del 69, que tenían como esa ideología de estar en contra de la violencia y la guerra. Además de que este Woodstock 99, fue el peor ejemplo de la depravación de los hombres de abusar de la mujeres, hasta por el simple hecho de tocarles los senos o alguna parte del cuerpo, mientras se encontraban por así decirlo en un momento de euforia por el momento, imágenes que se pueden durante todo el concierto cuando las cámaras enfocaban al público, y si buscamos en YouTube, se pueden apreciar muchas presentaciones completas de los músicos, pero es como si no fuese pasado nada, mientras que había una guerra campal, donde la violencia fue el lema de este festival de música.
En fin, desde mi punto de vista, la organización de este evento, tenía como finalidad solamente de que los organizadores pudieran ganar mucho dinero, sin preocuparse de tener una mejor calidad para los asistentes, y apartándose de todo el concepto del Woodstock 69, imagen que se aprovecharon para hacer marketing, además de poseer un interesante cartel de músicos, que lograron captar a más de 400 mil jóvenes, que asistieron para tener la experiencia de lo que pudo haber sido el mejor festival de música de la historia.
