My God, every time I think that the bands, the songs I love, even the artists I've admired for so many years, are getting older with every turn of the sun, I get horribly terrified. On this occasion, I bring you today the 32nd birthday of Alice In Chains' "Facelift". The album with which they debuted in music, and undoubtedly one of the best rock, but also grunge and even metal albums of all time. Just imagine for a second being one of these guys (Jerry Cantrell, Layne Staley, Mike Starr and Sean Kinney), going into a recording studio and doing this... You've got to be kidding me, right?

Yo cada vez que pienso que las bandas, que las canciones que amo; incluso, que los artistas que he admirado por tantos años, con cada vuelta que le damos al Sol, están más viejos: me aterro horriblemente. En esta ocasión, les traigo hoy el cumpleaños número 32 del ·Facelift" de Alice In Chains. El disco con el que debutaron en la música, y sin duda uno de los mejores álbumes de rock pero también de grunge, e incluso de metal, de todos los tiempos. Y es que tan solo imaginen por un segundo ser alguno de estos chicos (Jerry Cantrell, Layne Staley, Mike Starr y Sean Kinney), entrar a un estudio de grabación y hacer ésto... ¿Me deben estar tomando el pelo, cierto?
Obviously, there will be people who haven't heard it (the album, "Facelift") in its entirety. To those people, I say, what are you waiting for? And no, not in order to be overbearing or arrogant; it's just that it's a melodic experience from start to finish. Even if we get technical and detailed, you will find in the strength, the tone and above all the sentimentality (anger and pain) of the vocalist: Layne Staley, many things that in rock as such are not often found; at least not so often. Then there's the harmonic combination that underlies almost every track on the album, which is accompanied by the voice of the enormous, brilliant and multi-talented Jerry Cantrell. Who to me, is the true genius behind the sound of Alice in Chains.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves... I will now give you an album review, as few people have ever done. I'll start with a really hateful comparison, but one that will make you think at the same time. It's this: How many rock bands do you know that have their first 4 singles, as debuts, listed in the first 4 songs of the album? These guys, seriously, they were crazy.... At that time, remember that the world was coming from the era of heavy metal, trash metal, and also the huge success of the golden age of synthesizers in pop and electronica, in the whole decade of the 80s. So the singles (the commercial tracks) were distributed throughout the album to keep the buyer listening constantly.
Obviamente, habrá personas que no lo hayan escuchado (el álbum, "Facelift") completo. A ésas personas, les digo, ¿qué están esperando? Y no, no en orden de ser prepotente o soberbio; es que es en sí una experiencia melódica desde el inicio hasta el final. Incluso, si nos ponemos técnicos y detallistas, hallarán en la fuerza, el tono y sobre todo la sentimentalidad (ira y dolor) del vocalista: Layne Staley, muchas cosas que en el rock como tal no suelen hallarse a menudo; al menos no con tanta frecuencia. Además, está el detalle de la combinación armónica que hay subyacente en casi cada tema dentro del disco, que viene acompañado de la voz del enorme, genial y multitalentoso Jerry Cantrell. Que para mí, es el verdadero genio detrás del sonido de Alice in Chains.
Pero no nos adelantemos... A continuación les haré un álbum review, como pocas personas lo han hecho. Empezaré con una comparación realmente odiosa, pero que al mismo tiempo les hará pensar. Es esta ¿Cuántas bandas de rock conocen ustedes que tengan sus primeros 4 singles, como debutantes, enumeradas en las primeras 4 canciones del disco? Estos tipos, en serio, estaban locos... En ese momento, recuerden que el mundo venía de la era del heavy metal, del trash metal, y también del descomunal éxito que había supuesto, la era dorada de los sintetizadores en el pop y la electrónica, en toda la década de los 80's. Por tanto, los singles (los temas comerciales) se distribuían durante todo el álbum para mantener al comprador oyéndolo constantemente.
With these guys, on the other hand, it was completely different (I assume with the approval of their manager and producer) they chose to go all out on the first 4 tracks. We Die Young", "Man In The Box", "Sea Of Sorrow", "Bleed The Freak", literally the four great singles, videos and commercial tracks that brought Alice in Chains out of anonymity and catapulted them to eternal glory. And I'm not exaggerating, not one bit. Let's remember that this jewel of music had to compete with none other than Nirvana's "Nevermind". That is to say, against one of the best-selling, most played, most awarded and most commercial albums in the history of grunge and the music industry. And if you ask me, I'd say it's on par with the work done by Nirvana.
En cambio, con estos chicos, la cosa fue completamente distinta (asumo que con el beneplácito de su mánager y productor) eligieron colocar toda la carne sobre el asador en las primeras 4 pistas. Que se entienden así; "We Die Young", "Man In The Box", "Sea Of Sorrow", "Bleed The Freak", literalmente los cuatro grandes sencillos, vídeos y temas comerciales que sacaron a Alice in Chains del anonimato y los catapultaron a la gloria eterna. Y no exagero, ni un poco. Recordemos que esta joya de la música, tuvo que competir nada más y nada menos que con "Nevermind" de Nirvana. Es decir, contra uno de los discos más vendidos, reproducidos, galardonados y comerciales de la historia del grunge y de la industria musical. Y si me preguntan a mí, diría que está a la par del trabajo hecho por Nirvana.

But of course, we're talking about Alice in Chains, who at this point came from a mostly underground career in the bars and worldly venues of the big city of Seattle, where they were originally from. However, they were signed to the now major label Sub-Pop Records. However, at that time it was a small record label, which did not have the technological capacity nor could it compete with the big industries in the minefield that is music distribution...
Evidentemente, no tiene los recursos en producción, sobre las grabaciones de pista sobre pista, que hizo tan famoso y tan estridente el sonido logrado por Nirvana después de su álbum debut, "Bleach". Pero naturalmente, estamos hablando de que a este punto Alice in Chains, venía de hacerse con una carrera mayoritariamente underground en los bares y lugares mundanos de la gran ciudad de Seattle, de donde son originalmente. Now, I will continue to highlight the musical content of Alice in Chains' "Facelift", their debut album, I repeat, debut! If you are fans of this band, you will already know what I'm talking about as you read these words, but if not, you don't lose anything by going to your favourite app and playing the whole album. But let me recommend one track above all others; that would be "Love, Hate, Love", which if I remember correctly (I don't have the album at my fingertips, as I write) would be track number 6. Regardless of whether or not you appreciate rock as a genre, I urge you to pay attention to the vocal range of the band's frontman. A guy that from my perspective, no one has ever been able to replicate. He is one of a kind. Also, to be fair, from the very first riff of the song, chills inevitably run through your skin, don't you believe me? Give it a try and leave your experience in the comments.
On that note, you know when you listen to an album and you feel that it starts off with tremendous force but then it becomes monotonous and a bit boring? Well, with this creation this won't happen to you. It's one of those rarities that from track number 1 to track number 12, you can't help but feel the mix of feelings that are implicit in it. Personally, I experience anger, resentment, sadness (emptiness) but also a contagious euphoria. It's a bit bizarre to have to describe it in the first person, but if you had to categorise it, I think I'd put it this way: "darkly happy". For, in the eyes of the critics, this album is indeed the most youthful and powerful of the band's entire discography.
Ahora bien, voy a continuar destacando el contenido musical de Alice in Chains en el "Facelift", su álbum debut, repito ¡debut! Si son seguidores de esta banda, ya sabrán a lo que refiero mientras leen estas palabras, pero si no, no pierden nada yendo a su app favorita y reproducir el disco entero. Pero déjenme recomendarles una tema sobre todos los demás; ese sería "Love, Hate, Love", que si mal no recuerdo (no tengo el disco al alcance de mi mano, mientras redacto) sería la pista número 6. Sin importar si aprecian o no el rock como género, les encargo prestarle atención al registro vocal de frontman de la banda. Un tipo que desde mi óptica, nadie jamás pudo replicar. Es único. Además, para ser justos, desde el primer riff de la canción, los escalofríos recorren la piel inevitablemente ¿No me crees? Hagan la prueba y dejan la experiencia en los comentarios.
En este sentido, ¿saben cuando escuchan un álbum y sienten que empieza con una fuerza tremenda pero luego pasa a la monotonía y aburre un poco? Bueno, con esta creación no les sucederá esto. Es de esas rarezas que desde el track número 1 hasta el número 12, no podrás evitar sentir la mezcla de sentimientos que están implícitos en él. En lo personal, experimento ira, rencor, tristeza (vacío) pero también una euforia contagiante. Es un poco bizarro tener que describirlo en primera persona, pero si tuvieses que catalogarlo, creo que lo haría de este modo "oscuramente feliz". Pues, para la crítica especializada, en efecto, este disco es el que más ánimo y poderío juvenil tiene de toda la discografía de la banda.
Finally, there are "lost" tracks like "It Ain't Like That" or "Put You Down", which also stand out for having an unusual power on people while being played. And I'm telling you, Alice in Chains is a band, or was a band; to put it better, since the original line-up that made this album is no more, nor will it ever be (two of its members died from substance abuse, Layne Staley and Mike Starr) but those guys left a musical legacy that is timeless. Personally, it pleases me to know that 32 years have passed since the release of "Facelift", curiously the same age I am, and that it is still remembered, still relevant and causes me the same admiration and the same feelings as when I was more unpredictable and younger. Thank you Alice In Chains, thank you for the rock you made with such majesty. I hope you listen to the album and let yourself be carried away, believe me you won't waste your time.
Finalmente, hay temas "perdidos" como "It Ain't Like That" o "Put You Down", que también destacan por tener un poder inusual en las personas mientras son reproducidos. Y es que, enserio les digo, Alice in Chains es una banda, o fue una; para expresarlo mejor, puesto que la formación original que hizo este álbum ya no está más, ni lo estará jamás (dos de sus miembros murieron por el abuso de sustancias, Layne Staley y Mike Starr) pero esos muchachos dejaron un legado musical que es atemporal. Personalmente, me agrada saber que han pasado 32 años desde el lanzamiento del "Facelift", curiosamente la misma edad que yo tengo, y que aún es recordado, es vigente y en mí causa la mism admiración y los mismos sentimiento que cuando era más impredecible y joven. Gracias Alice In Chains, gracias por el rock que hicieron con tanta majestuosidad. Espero oigan el álbum y se dejen llevar, créanme que no perderán su tiempo.
