Emotional distress can be defined as the state of mental torture or torment that can take different forms. It can result from a particular event or mental health issue that has come up either presently or in time past.

What can cause emotional distress is widely different and they involve the combination of various factors. For some persons mental distress can be due to horrible or shocking event, like death of someone special in the family. It can come from a large range of hidden mental health conditions. In some other scenario,certain occurrences can cause emotional distress. Some examples are as follows;

Emotional distress can occur at work: the work environment can be a very stressful place mean while some stress can motivate while if it's too much it will be quite overwhelming.

Things that can cause emotional distress at work include;
Job security.
Low payment.
Working hours
Increased responsibilities.
Long working hours.

Relationship between colleague and manager.
Circumstances that you find yourself in can cause unexpected distress. It can be experienced in all levels in an organization.
Emotional distress can occur at home: the possible things that can cause emotional distress at home is either environmental or personal factors.

Among the possible causes are;
Relationship problems.
Being isolated or lonely.
Low income.
Life changes e.g. child bearing, moving to a new apartment etc

HOW TO PREVENT EMOTIONAL DISTRESS.

1 Always stay active physically.

2 Take in healthy diet.

3 Take break when it's needed.

4 Avoid every form of taking in hard substance.

5 Learn how to manage any form of distress.

6 Have enough sleep.

7 Counsellors can help out in giving therapy to the victim of emotional distress.

8 Take out time to relax regularly: create time to care for yourself as an individual. Only if you can devote at least 20 minutes of your time to relax daily it will help you a lot. Discover what helps you to relax .e.g. find a book to read, listen to sounds that can help, take a cool bath, stay focus some times etc.

9 Try meditating regularly: the act of meditating is another means of actively redirecting your thoughts, by you choosing what you should think about. You are able as an individual to manage your emotions and also to reduce your emotional distress.
