Bandrek, a typical West Java drink

Hello friends in Amazing Drinks Community 🥰🥰🥰🥰

At the beginning of January, several areas in Indonesia are still entering the rainy season, this causes the air to feel cold in the afternoon and light rain still falls in the afternoon and evening. So that the body doesn't shiver easily because of the cold wind, we usually make a Bandrek drink.

Bandrek drink is a typical drink from the West Java region, especially the Sundanese tribe. Sundanese people usually make Bandrek drinks from ginger and brown sugar. Bandrek is served hot and drunk slowly when the drink is warm. By drinking Bandrek, the body feels warm and can overcome colds and flatulence due to the effects of eating wrong things.

I will make Bandrek with some additional spices, so that the bandrek has a richer taste. I would add cloves, lemongrass and cinnamon. With these additional spices, the taste of Bandrek will taste spicier, more fragrant and more delicious. Sometimes people add pandan leaves to Bandrek drinks, but I don't like the aroma of pandan leaves in Bandrek drinks, so I won't use them.

Before making Bandrek, I will take some lemongrass stalks from the garden. I am very happy to be able to use the produce from my own garden to make this Bandrek drink.

How to make
To produce a Bandrek drink that is rich in taste, I will burn the ginger first. Burned ginger will release more essential oils and a more fragrant aroma. First, wash the ginger thoroughly to remove any remaining soil.

Next I will pierce the ginger with a stick, making it easier for me to burn it.

Then I burned the ginger so the skin turned black and charred.

Then throw away the ginger skin, wash the ginger thoroughly.

To make the ginger taste spicier, I will blend it with water. I added 500 mL of water into the blender so that the ginger dissolved in the water.

Clean the lemongrass stalks, beat them until they bruise.

Put the ginger solution into the pan.

Add 700 mL of water, so the total water is 1200 mL.

Cook until the water content is reduced, from 1200 mL of water I can make 1000 mL (1 L) Bandrek. Cook over medium to low heat so that the aroma of the bandrek is richer.

Serving method
Before serving it, I will filter the Bandrek drink, usually in palm sugar/brown sugar there are sometimes animals like small wasps, therefore usually the Bandrek seller will filter the Bandrek drink before serving it to the buyer. Some dissolved spices such as lemongrass, cloves and cinnamon will also not be included in the cup. By filtering it, we can enjoy a cup of warm Bandrek without worrying about any spices being drunk.
