One hot summer day while delighting myself with a refreshing cone of Durian ice cream in Davao City's downtown area, I stumbled upon a prestigious landmark by accident.
I've been passing through this historic district many times on previous occasions, but wondered why I haven't noticed this slightly hidden site. Hmm, perhaps my eyes were just too busy glancing at other more prominent places. Anyway…
If you’re an adventurous traveler like me, spurs of the moment do seldom happen. Like a thief, they shock you unprepared when not expecting them the least. It's simply crucial, as a personal advantage, to always pay attention to your immediate surroundings when exploring a certain locality. Who knows what you might suddenly discover next, right?
Fortunately, that spontaneous surprise manifested itself to me in the physical form of an urban space tucked behind a respected government building called Sangguniang Panlungsod ng Dabaw, their local council office. Interestingly, situated right across it was the historic San Pedro Cathedral, an iconic church that you won't surely miss if you passed by that bustling neighborhood.
Standing in front of its ornately fashioned steel entrance gate, I looked up and saw the words “Osmeña Park”, and soon realized that I had definitely ignored this important landmark before.
It was now the perfect instant to compensate for lost opportunities and finally explore one of Davao City’s most emblematic green environments.
After gobbling up my tasty treat, I made sure my smartphone’s camera was enabled to travel photography mode - ready to capture plenty of picturesque visual souvenirs that I desired to collect for this tourist attraction.
Upon entering its premises, I walked straight to the park’s central obelisk and memorial pedestal where a metal plaque was installed. Here, you can read a short description about the landmark’s significance and valuable context to Philippine society.

Afterwards, my relentless curiosity led me to its dedicated entertainment area for kids. In fact, this playground occupied a major stake of the park’s footprint, bearing a special name: Children's Fun Park.
Here, various playground equipment designed in colorful styles were freely available for the public and were securely fastened to its floor layout for children’s enjoyment and safety. Parents, guardians, and caretakers were also allowed entry to closely monitor their children well.
Likewise present were a few life-sized animals crafted out of painted reinforced concrete that added a youthful charm to its already dynamic atmosphere. As I stood there and watched the kids play, my “inner child” awakened me with fond memories of my younger years.
If there was one critical observation that clearly inspired me to smile, it was the park’s generous abundance of natural elements such as trees, shrubs, flowering plants, trimmed grass, and other lush foliage.
Well, obviously green spaces like city parks must, first and foremost, be ideally adorned with Mother Nature’s gifts. Although I've witnessed some places without flora, plantlife, and greenery, we wouldn't be naming them parks without their necessary vegetation, would we?
Nevertheless, despite its limited real estate, Osmeña Park managed to include most of the essential requirements for a park to thrive.
Moreover, my vision was also stunned by a magnificent water feature (fountain) positioned at another corner within the park.
The most eye-catching detail was the impressive sculpture of a Philippine Eagle perched on top of it. With its intricately carved posture, it was an incredibly marvelous sight to behold.
Like many other major parks in the city, this bird of prey was showcased as sculptural pieces because it's the official symbolic representation of Davao, the recognized home of these magnificent species of flying creatures.
Below it were other indigenous wildlife like crocodiles and turtles existing in this region’s wild habitats. Such a fantastic work of art indeed!
And last but not the least, I was fascinated by the park’s lounge, highlighting a vernacular cottage and consisting of a table with seating items resembling timber. I ended my short tour of the park here and reflected on one final thought.
To conclude, I've always been admiring the overall cleanliness and the efficient garbage disposal systems of Davao City and the rest of the region. And the Osmeña Park, an astonishing jewel of nature and architecture, was undoubtedly one of the cleanest attractions I've seen - a true testament to the extraordinary discipline exemplified by the warm-hearted Davaoeños.
