La vuelta de Frank Lampard, otrora leyenda del Chelsea mientras vestía de corto, como entrenador del conjunto Blue tras la más que cantada destitución de Graham Potter no sorprende a aquellos que aún tienen intactas las esperanzas en el potencial del legendario futbolista como estratega, a pesar de su anterior salida del club -habiéndose ido como el peor estratega, en términos de efectividad, de la era Abramóvich- y su mal paso por el Everton. The return of one-time Chelsea legend Frank Lampard as manager of the Blues following Graham Potter's sacking comes as little surprise to those who still have high hopes for the legendary footballer's potential as a tactician, despite his previous departure from the club - having gone out as the worst manager, in terms of effectiveness, of the Abramovich era - and his poor spell at Everton. His first season in charge at Derby County was promising and even more impressive at Stamford Bridge, managing to qualify his young side for the Champions League despite a transfer ban and the departure of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid.
However, as has been the case with other Chelsea managers such as Antonio Conte, Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti, Lampard was not given enough time to build a solid project on his achievements, and when the poor results came the sacking came almost immediately. The world of football is unforgiving and travels at a dizzying pace; at one point José Mourinho himself - who had his glories at Stamford Bridge - acknowledged that the brutality of modern football means that sooner or later, any manager can be sacked.

La recontratación de Lampard -como entrenador interino hasta el final de temporada- es para muchos una medida que permite a la cúpula directiva, encabezada por Todd Boehly, ganar tiempo y negociar con Luis Enrique y/o Julian Naguelsmann -que suenan como principales candidatos a tomar el sitio de Lampard-; pero quizá el Chelsea todavía vea en él un cierto potencial importante como entrenador. El tiempo dirá si Lampard logrará establecerse como uno de los grandes entrenadores del Chelsea, o si su segundo paso por el club tendrá un fin similar al primero.
Procederemos a realizar una radiografía de las claves tácticas de “Frankie” como entrenador. Durante su primera etapa al frente del banquillo Blue, Lampard aplicó un enfoque similar al que había utilizado en el Derby County, especialmente en la fase ofensiva. En la mayoría de los casos, optó por una formación 4-3-3, que permitía a los laterales avanzar y a los extremos flotar hacia el centro hacia el centro para favorecer las superposiciones, o mantenerse por fuera para generar superioridad por las bandas.
Lampard's re-signing - as interim manager until the end of the season - is seen by many as a move that buys the top management, led by Todd Boehly, time to negotiate with Luis Enrique and/or Julian Naguelsmann - who have been tipped as leading candidates to take Lampard's place - but perhaps Chelsea still see some significant potential in him as a manager. Time will tell whether Lampard will establish himself as one of Chelsea's great managers, or whether his second spell at the club will have a similar end to his first.
Let's proceed with an x-ray of "Frankie's" tactical keys as a manager. During his first spell in charge of the Blue dugout, Lampard applied a similar approach to the one he had used at Derby County, especially in the attacking phase. In most cases, he opted for a 4-3-3 formation, allowing the full-backs to move forward and the wingers to float towards the centre to encourage overlaps, or stay out wide to generate superiority down the flanks.

In addition, Lampard experimented with different formations, including a variant of the 4-3-3 that morphed into a 4-2-3-1. In this formation, one of Chelsea's midfielders (usually the one on the right flank) would drop back to cover the spaces where the single midfield pivot could not reach. He also tried playing with a three-man defence, something he had not used in Derby, perhaps because the condition of his players did not allow for such a tactical arrangement in the defensive zone.
The strategy of implementing a three-man defence ended up proving very beneficial when facing teams that also use the same defensive formation, as it allows them to play with more midfielders inside without compromising the necessary balance in the box down low. Mateo Kovacic, N'Golo Kanté and Jorginho - already at Arsenal - were particularly well suited to play that linking role between midfield and defence.
