Antes del partido el Barcelona estaba en la posición #5 y el Atlético en la posición #4, solo los 4 mejores equipos pueden clasificarse para la Liga de Campeones de la próxima temporada, y por eso este partido es muy importante para ambos equipos. El primer partido entre estos 2 equipos en esta temporada terminó con una victoria para el Atlético. Sin embargo, el Barcelona ahora tiene nuevos jugadores de ataque que pudieron fichar durante el invierno, y esto debería hacerlos mucho más capaces en sus jugadas de ataque.
Esperaba ver al Atlético con una defensa muy organizada, y con ataques rápidos, y esperaba que el Barcelona aplicase su estilo habitual de acaparar el balón y buscar filtrar buenos pases al área haciendo triangulaciones y cosas así.
Este partido es probablemente el mejor que ofrece el fútbol europeo este fin de semana, y puede dar al equipo ganador un importante impulso emocional para las próximas semanas e incluso meses.
¿Cómo estuvo el partido?
El partido comenzó como se esperaba porque estos son 2 equipos que nunca cambian su estilo de juego, por lo que es más fácil predecir en un sentido general qué equipo hará qué cosa. En este caso, el Barcelona empezó a mover el balón por todo el campo buscando alguna manera de filtrar buenos pases al área del Atlético, y el Atlético se centró principalmente en sus movimientos defensivos, al mismo tiempo que buscaba oportunidades para los contraataques.
El primer gol llegó bastante rápido, sobre el minuto 8, Suárez se acercó al área del Barcelona por la derecha. Apuesto a que este gol es el mejor gol de Alba en toda su carrera, e incluso diría que hubo algunas similitudes con el famoso gol de volea de Zidane en la final de la Champions League de 2002.
Este gol devolvió el partido a un estado parejo, y estábamos justo donde comenzamos. Con el Barcelona monopolizando el balón y el Atlético centrándose en la defensa y luego en jugadas de ataque clínicamente precisas.
Tras el gol, el Barcelona siguió dominando el partido y controlando el balón. La mayoría de sus ataques venían de su lado derecho principalmente porque Adama era muy activo y capaz de causar mucho peligro y problemas a la defensa del Atlético. Tanto es así, que el segundo gol del Barcelona llegó de un buen centro de Adama, seguido de un cabezazo de Gavi desde el centro del área.

The first time these 2 teams played against each other in this season the matched ended with a victory for Atletico. However, Barcelona has now new attacking players that they were able to sign during the winter, and this should make them much more capable in their attacking plays.
I expected to see Atletico with a very organized defense, and with quick attacks, and I expected Barcelona applying their usual style of monopolizing the ball possesions, and looking to filter good passes into the area by doing triangulations and things like that.
This match is probably the best one European football has to offer this weekend, and it can give the winner team an important emotional boos for the coming weeks and even months.
How was the match?
The match started as expected because these are 2 teams that never change their playstyle so it becomes easier to predict on a general sense, which team is going to do what. In this case, Barcelona started to move the ball all over the field looking for some way to filter good passes into Atletico's area, and Atletico was mostly focused in their defensive moves, while also looking for opportunities for counter attacks.
The first goal happened rather quickly, around the 8 minute mark, Suarez approached Barcelona's area from his right side. The entire play was very fast paced, and as Suarez was entering the area from the right, Carrasco was entering it from the center. So Suarez took the obvious decision and passed the ball to Carrasco who had a little bit of positional advantage with respect to Araujo, and this allowed him to make a very simple crossed shot.
Barcelona's reaction came almost instantly. They were attacking over their right side thanks to Adama's dribbling cappabilities and explosive speed. Atletico's defense commits a couple of mistakes and this result in the ball ending in Dani Alves' feet, who sent a perfect cross towards Alba, who was in the other side of the area without any defensive player covering. And Alba's volley was simply mindblowing. I would bet this goal is Alba's best goal of his entire career, and I would even say there were some similarities with Zidane famous volley goal in the Champions League final of 2002.
This goal brought back the match to an even state, and we were right back at were we started. With Barcelona monopolizing the ball, and Atletico focusing on defense and then on clinically precise attacking plays.
After the goal, Barcelona continued to dominate the match and control the ball. Most of their attacks came from their right side mainly because Adama was very active, and capable of causing a lot of danger and troubles to Atletico's defense. So much so, that Barcelona's second goal came from a good cross by Adama, followed by a header by Gavi from the center of the area.

Parecía que el Barcelona estaba más cerca de su tercer gol que el Atlético de su segundo. Y esto fue exactamente lo que sucedió hacia el final de la primera mitad.

El control del partido por parte del Barcelona era absoluto y el Atlético no podía hacer nada. Estaban completamente a merced de Barcelona.
Creo que la importante ventaja de 3 goles de Barcelona hizo que ese equipo comenzara a relajarse un poco. Eso, sumado a las 3 sustituciones agresivas del Atlético para cambiar el enfoque del equipo y pasar de una estrategia defensiva a otra más centrada en el ataque, resultó en un gol de Suárez en el minuto 58 que redujo la ventaja del Barcelona a 2 goles.
El goles de Suárez fue simplemente un cabezazo tras un saque de esquina. Giménez dio el primer cabezazo al pasar el balón a Suárez, quien luego remató la jugada con su propio cabezazo.
As the minutes kept passing, it became clear Atletico was unable to create more attacking plays that could put Barcelona's advantage at risk. It felt like Barcelona was closer to their third goal than Atletico to their second one. And this was exactly what happened towards to end of the first half.
Barcelona had a free kick quite far from the area, so they decided to cross the ball into the area, Torres sent a header into the post, and the bounce ended in Araujo's feet who sent the ball inside the net with a decent and powerful shot.
The 2 goal advantage for Barcelona was completely deserved. As the first half ended, Atletico seemed very defeated and with no idea how to improve their performance. It was Simeone's job to figure out what to do in order to improve in the next 45 minutes.
The second half couldn't have started better for Barcelona. Not even 5 minutes had passed, and Barcelona was already scoring their goal #4. This time, the play came from the left side, when after a failed cross into the area, the ball ended near the central border where Dani Alves was waiting, and with an excellent shot he was able to easily sent the ball inside the net.
Barcelona's control of the match was absolute, and there was nothing Atletico could do. They were completely at the mercy of Barcelona.
I believe Barcelona's important 3 goal advantage, caused that team to start to relax a little bit. That, coupled with Atletico's 3 aggressive substitutions to switch the focus from a defensive strategy, to another more focused on the attack, resulted in a goal by Suarez around the 58 minute mark that reduced Barcelona's advantage to 2 goals.
Suarez goals was simply a header after a corner kick. Gimenez gave the first header when he passed the ball to Suarez who then finished the play with his own header.

Shortly after this goal, Dani Alves commits a very silly foul near the border of the area which caused him to receive a well-deserved red card and this change the dynamics of the match, but not the final result.
Since Barcelona was now playing with only 10 players, and since Atletico was already focusing most of their energies in their attacks, during the final 20 minutes or so of the match it was Atletico the team that was attacking the most, and Barcelona the one defending itself.
Atletico was now doing their best to try and tie the match, but Barcelona was a very organized team, and the 2 goal advantage was simply too much.
In the end, the match ended with a well-deserved Barcelona victory, and this victory also allows Barcelona to catch the position #4, leaving Atletico behind in position #5.
It is now Atletico the team that is out of the Champions League of next season, and the urgency to improve their performance is now on them. This part of the table, including the positions #3 and #6, is very even, and it is exciting to see these teams changing their positions match after match.
I do believe that with the new players Barcelona signing in January they will be able to finish the season in the top 4, but only time will tell.
