El Atlético de Madrid se convirtió en un equipo súper competitivo después de fichar a Simeone, y ha logrado ganar un par de ligas desde entonces, lo cual es sorprendente porque las ligas suelen estar dominadas por el Barcelona o el Real Madrid.
Esta temporada, el rendimiento del Atlético de Madrid fue inferior al que muchos esperaban, e incluso están teniendo problemas para mantenerse en las 4 primeras posiciones. Necesitan permanecer al menos en la posición 4 para clasificarse para la Liga de Campeones la próxima temporada, no hacerlo sería catastrófico para sus finanzas.
Este es un partido en el que yo pensaba que Ancelotti debería hacer rotaciones pesadas y proteger a los jugadores principales de posibles lesiones. ¿Cómo estuvo el partido?
Me alegré de ver a Ancelotti haciendo muchas rotaciones porque este partido podría considerarse de alto riesgo debido al rival y sus circunstancias en la liga. Algo que no esperaba era ver a Simeone dejando a Suárez y Griezmann en el banquillo a pesar de que una victoria sería de gran importancia para sus aspiraciones actuales.
Estos 2 delanteros, Suárez y Griezmann están obviamente entre los mejores jugadores de este equipo, y no es normal verlos a ambos en el banquillo, especialmente si Félix ni siquiera está disponible para jugar.

Atletico Madrid became a super competitive team after they signed Simeone, and they have managed to win a couple of leagues since then, which is surprising because the leagues are usually dominated by either Barcelona or Real Madrid.
This season, Atletico Madrid's performance was lower than many expected, and they are even having problems remaining in the top 4 positions. They need to remain at least in position 4 to qualify for the Champions League next season, not doing so would be catastrophic for their finances.
This is a match where I think Ancelotti should do heavy rotations and protect the main players from potential injuries. It is obvious Atletico will play super intensively because they need the points, and since Real Madrid has nothing to win in this match, they shouldn't risk the health of their main players. If it was up to me, I would play this match only with players who are usually on the bench, I would even send Bale to the pitch if he was available.
How was the match?
I was happy to see Ancelotti doing a lot of rotations because this match could be considered a high-risk one due to the rival and their circumstances in the league. Something that I wasn't expecting was to see Simeone leaving both Suarez and Griezmann on the bench despite the fact a victory would be of huge importance for their current aspirations.
These 2 strikers, Suarez and Griezmann are obviously among the best players on this team, and it isn't normal to see them both on the bench, especially if Felix isn't even available to play.
As many were expecting, the team showing the most initiative was Atletico Madrid, they created the best attacks and they were even very close to scoring around the 4 minute mark when Correa missed a face to face against the goalkeeper which could have easily ended up as a goal. The angle wasn't the best, and Correa sent the ball only a few centimeters away from the net. Carrasco also had a terrific goal opportunity when he did an individual way around the 8 minute mark, he dribbled a couple of defenders but unfortunately for him the shot when outside just by a little bit.

Comenzó la segunda mitad y la dinámica del partido fue la misma que antes. El Atlético estaba jugando mejor, pero me pareció que el ritmo del partido se estaba volviendo más lento, probablemente porque ambos equipos estaban cómodos con el resultado.

Real Madrid was trying to have a good match, but the fact this match was irrelevant to them probably had an effect on them because I noticed they weren't giving as much effort as is usually the case with important matches. Nevertheless, they were still playing well enough and Atletico was having serious trouble scoring a goal.
Oblak, Atletico's goalkeeper, didn't have to stop a single shot in the first 30 minutes, that's how easy the match was for Atletico due to Real Madrid's disinterest.
Atlético finally scored at the 39-minute mark thanks to a penalty by Vallejo against Cunha a couple of minutes earlier. The penalty was scored by Carrasco and this allowed Atletico to obtain a well-deserved 1 goal advantage.
The second half started and the dynamic of the match was the same as before. Atletico was playing better, but it seemed to me the pace of the match was getting slower, probably because both teams were comfortable with the result.
I even thought Atletico could easily have a 2 goal advantage if their aim was better. However, things started to change once Ancelotti decided to do some substitutions and some of the main players started to go inside the pitch. The 2 that had the most impact were Valverde and Vinicius. But especially Valverde, because only a few minutes after stepping into the pitch he already attempt 2 incredibly powerful shots that surely scared Oblak.

El disparo de Carrasco incluso dio en el poste, pero lamentablemente para él, se fue fuera.
A los 87 minutos, el Real Madrid tuvo una de sus mejores oportunidades cuando Asensio hizo un disparo increíble, y Oblak detuvo milagrosamente el balón. Esta próxima semana habrá más partidos en las principales ligas europeas, también está la final de la Coppa Italia entre el Inter y la Juventus el miércoles, y el próximo fin de semana está la final de la FA Cup entre Liverpool y Chelsea. Actualmente no estoy seguro de qué partidos veré, ¡pero es emocionante ver que todas las competiciones llegan a sus etapas finales y tienen nuevos campeones!
Even though Real Madrid improved with their substitutions, that didn't stop Atletico Madrid from continuing to dominate, and to deserve a bigger goal advantage, both Carrasco and Griezmann could have scored goals around the 75-minute mark and they both missed their shots by mere centimeters. Carrasco's shot even hit the post but sadly for him, it went outside.
At the 87-minute mark, Real Madrid had one of their best opportunities when Asensio did an amazing shot and Oblak miraculously stopped the ball. It was smart by Real Madrid because Instead of simply shooting the ball, there were 2 pre-planned touches before Asensio's shot, and that allowed him to find enough space to shoot.
During the final minutes of the match, Atletico decided to adopt a completely defensive attitude in order to protect their 1 goal advantage, and Real Madrid was able to freely move the ball around Atlético's area looking for opportunities to do crosses and shots with the hope of tying this match. But in the end, Atletico obtained their victory and are now in a very comfortable position in the league with little chances of losing their fourth position.
I believe the top 4 positions won't change, and the teams participating in the Champions League next season will be Real Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, and Atletico Madrid.
What's next?
This next week there will be more matches across the major European leagues, there is also the Coppa Italia final between Inter and Juventus on Wednesday, and next weekend there will be the FA Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea. I am currently not sure which matches I will be watching, but it is exciting to see all the competitions reaching its final stages and having new champions!
