Hoy decidí ver Manchester City vs Atlético Madrid, un partido entre 2 equipos y 2 entrenadores que entienden el fútbol desde perspectivas completamente diferentes.
Guardiola, por un lado, se ha convertido en un entrenador muy destacado por su preferencia por monopolizar la posesión del balón y mover el balón por todo el campo tratando de encontrar zonas débiles o espacios abiertos en la defensa rival que luego su equipo pueda explotar con un buen ataque.
Los equipos de Guardiola han jugado así desde que comenzó a entrenar al Barcelona hace más de una década, y no ha cambiado. Su estilo le ha permitido ganar muchos trofeos a lo largo de su carrera, y creo que es justo considerarlo entre los mejores entrenadores de su generación.

El Atlético de Madrid perdió 2 finales, una en 2014 y la segunda en 2016, y el Manchester City perdió la final la temporada pasada contra el Chelsea. Han estado cerca, pero hasta ahora no han tenido suerte en ganar este trofeo.
Para ambos equipos, el no llegar a las semifinales se consideraría un fracaso. Para el Atlético de Madrid este es el único trofeo que le queda por ganar esta temporada, y al Manchester City seguramente se sienta en la obligación de ganar este torneo, sobre todo por el dinero que han invertido desde que se convirtió en un club estado.
Today I decided to watch Manchester City vs Atlético Madrid, a match between 2 teams and 2 coaches that understand football from completely different perspectives.
Guardiola, on one hand, has become a very prominent coach due to his preference for monopolizing the ball possession and moving the ball all over the pitch trying to find weak zones or open spaces in the rival's defense that his team can then exploit with good attacking plays.
Guardiola's teams have played like this since he first began coaching Barcelona more than a decade ago, and he hasn't changed. His style has allowed him to win many trophies throughout his career, and I think it is fair to consider him among the best coaches of his generation.
Simeone, on the other hand, has developed a completely opposite playing style with Atletico Madrid. He usually prefers to focus more on his defensive side, and prevent the rival team from scoring a single goal.
Atlético Madrid is a team known for having a very solid defense and goalkeeper, and in the Spanish league, they are usually the team that finishes the season with the least amount of goals received.
Guardiola thinks a good attack is the best defense and Simeone thinks a good defense is the best attack. I see this match as a battle between opposite football styles, and this is why I love the Champions League so much because the best ones usually end up facing each other sooner or later.
Both of these teams have tried to win the Champions League in recent seasons and both failed. Atlético Madrid lost 2 finals, one in 2014 and the second one in 2016, and Manchester City lost the final last season against Chelsea. They have been close, but so far no luck in winning this trophy.
For both of these teams failing to reach the semifinals will be considered a failure. For Atlético Madrid this is the only trophy left they can still win this season, and for Manchester City, they surely feel obliged to win this tournament, especially after all the money they have invested since they became a state club.
¿Cómo estuvo el partido?
No esperaba ver a Foden y Grealish en el banquillo del City. Estos 2 se encuentran entre los jugadores jóvenes más talentosos del equipo del City y pensé que también estaban entre los favoritos de Guardiola.
Por el lado del Atlético, ver a Correa en el banquillo también me desconcertó un poco. How was the match?
I didn't expect to see Foden and Grealish on City's bench. These 2 are among the most talented young players in City's squad and I thought they were also among Guardiola's favorites.
On Atlético's side, seeing Correa on the bench also puzzled me a little bit. He has been the best Atlético player in their most recent matches and I also was expecting to see him on the pitch from the beginning. Nevertheless, these 2 teams have so much talent that regardless of the players they leave on the bench, they are always able to have a super competitive lineup.
City wasted no time taking control of the ball, which is why I believe most people were expecting to see. The majority of the time was spent with the ball on Atlético's side of the pitch, and sadly for Atletico they were unable to make a single dangerous shot. All of the attacks were created by City.
City's defense had little to no job to do in the first half, and in the entire match actually. Atletico was unable to create good counter-attacks, which is the most popular way a defensive team can cause danger to their rivals.
Felix and Griezmann couldn't connect either with each other or with their teammates, and most of their efforts were designed to accumulate a lot of players in their defensive areas to not allow any City's players to filter good passes and have some type of superiority inside the area. Most of City's attacks were crosses into the areas looking mostly for headers. The thing is, Atletico's defenders are taller than City's attackers, so these crosses were useless for the most part.
Even though City continued to dominate almost everything about the match, they couldn't dominate Atletico's area. That zone of the pitch is sacred for Simeone and Guardiola's players were having a hard time achieving their ultimate objective, to score a goal.
Shortly after the second half started, Atlético created what was probably their best counterattack in their entire match, which finished with Llorente sending the ball to City's goalkeeper for an easy catch.
Both teams began to do a lot of substitutions starting from the 60-minute mark. Atletico did 3 substitutions and around 8-9 minutes later, City also did 3 changes. These substitutions changed not only the way the players were positioned on the pitch, but also their collective tactics, and all of this ended up favoring City because not even 3 minutes after their substitutions, they were scoring their first and only goal of the match.
Foden fue la pieza clave del gol gracias a su asombrosa asistencia a De Bruyne que rompió el sistema defensivo del Atlético. Supo filtrar un pase rodeado de 4 jugadores del Atlético, y esto fue seguido por la definición perfecta de De Bruyne.

La temporada pasada el Chelsea derrotó al Real Madrid en semifinales y seguro que muchos jugadores del Madrid están desesperados por la revancha. Sin embargo, el Chelsea siempre es un equipo muy sólido y competitivo, por lo que no es fácil adivinar cuál puede ganar.

Foden was the key player in the goal thanks to his amazing assistance to De Bruyne that broke Atlético's defensive system. He was able to filter a pass while being surrounded with 4 of Atletico's players, and this was followed by De Bruyne's perfect definition.
The goal was completely deserved because City was the dominant team since the beginning of the match. It would have been a bit unfair for the match to end with a 0-0 tie after all the efforts City's players put into the match.
Atletico's players also gave a lot of effort of course, but they were unable to stop the combination between Foden and De Bruyne, and given their lack of good attacking plays, I don't think they deserved a better result.
This battle between opposite football styles, one focused on the attack and the other one on the defense had a clear winner. But let's not forget these quarterfinals consist of 2 matches and this was just the first one. Atletico will soon have the opportunity to have their revenge in their own stadium.
I wonder if they can perform such as well when they are the team obliged to attack and score.

Last season Chelsea defeated Real Madrid in the semifinals and I am sure many Madrid players are desperate for revenge. However, Chelsea is always a very solid and competitive team so it isn't easy to guess which one can win.
